We loved the views and the drive down the hill on Aska road was spectacular. The town itself was very touristy but with very nice shops and its marvelous train. We had some special goodies and walked around a lot- but really the best of it was lunch ( Mikes) the fabulous views and the windy roads often by picturesque fields and the river. The curvy drive on Aska was not for the faint of heart. It was a really fun trip.

We just returned from a 10-day trip to the North Georgia mountains.

We began our trip in Blairsville and we stayed at the Holiday Inn Express for three days. The hotel was well-kept and clean. Our room was a “family suite” but it was still quite small. The indoor pool was very small. The free continental breakfast was a nice bonus. We especially enjoyed walking around the beautiful golf course behind the hotel. This hotel was adequate.

We stayed in a cabin just outside of Blue Ridge (in Epworth) for a week. We rented the Riverside Chalet from 1st Class Cabins in Blue Ridge (they used to be called Premier Cabin Rentals). The cabin was absolutely gorgeous and extremely well equipped. Our kids loved the pool table and air hockey in the basement. The cabin well exceeded our expectations and we will rent from 1st Class Cabins again.

There is MUCH to do in this area. We especially enjoyed hiking up to Bald Mt (it is a VERY STEEP ½ mile hike to the top or you can take a shuttle for $2), hiking to two waterfalls (Helton Creek Falls and Duke Creek Falls), shopping in downtown Blue Ridge, white water rafting on the Ocoee river (just over the border in Tn) and visiting the Ocoee Olympic Whitewater Center where the kayaking events for the 1996 Olympics were held. We also enjoyed horseback riding at Blanche Manor and swimming in the lake at Vogel State Park. We visited Helen, Ga but it was over crowded and the gift shops were full of tourist junk. The buildings in Helen are Bavarian style and very cute.

We cooked our meals at the cabin so we did not try many restaurants. We did enjoy Hofer’s in Helen and we did not like Suzanne’s on the Riverfront near Blairsville. We ABSOLUTELY LOVED Mercier Orchards in Blue Ridge. We had a delicious lunch there in the deli. Their fantastic fried pies and apple cider donuts are not to be missed. Their fresh peaches were divine.

We enjoyed our trip very much and we plan on returning to the area again soon.

We completed the 7+ mile hike and it was beautiful. The rating by the Forest Service was moderate-difficult. I agree with that! From the very start, you make a steep climb to the top of the mountain and follow the ridge. The hike is a loop and you return on the Forest Service Road which must have been the moderate part. The area surrounding the swinging bridge is beautiful with huge Mountain Laurels and Rhododendrons. The river views from the bridge are stunning. There is a nice little stream coming into the river close to the bridge. The bridge is not scary to walk across. You can take the easy route by driving the Forest Service Road and parking 1/4 mile from the bridge. If you walk the 7+ mile loop, you might want to plan on 4 - 5 hours if you want to spend some time at the bridge. If you drive to it, you can see everything in less than an hour. It would be a nice place for a picnic lunch.

In July 2011 my family and freinds (total of 7) headed to the blue ridge marina to rent a pontoon boat for the day! we entered the marine store and said we have reservation for a pontoon boat, The two females acted as if we were bothering them! now i know why we were the only ones at the marina at 10 am
Had a great day fished explored the shore line and collected a few pcs of drift wood
upon arrival to the dock i see 5 guys waiting for us keep in mind my kids are 8,10, 11
The boss jumps on the boat screaming about the 2 clay foot prints on the deck i asked for a hose we dont have hoses we are charging your card and extra $100 i said[----]and then the local fishing guide started screaming in my face i am a blueridge cop an your paying the $100 or your going to jail . I paid if i were with my buddys instead of my family
it would have gone down a little different .
I called blue ridge chief and he said they have had this problem in the past and that he would discipline his officer !

I had read the one terrible review the Blue Ridge Marina had, but decided the positives would outweigh the negative. In addition that review was several years ago and things had to have changed simply based on that terrible review. However to my complete shock the almost identical story was happening before our eyes. After a wonderful day on the pontoon we were coming in to park the boat and 5-6 employees were waiting on the dock. I had originally thought no big deal that they are just waiting on the last boat to go home for the day, but before we had even tied up a manager was screaming about burn holes on the outer front of boat's carpet. Then asking who was smoking and we told him no one smokes. He then suggested we must of had candles on a boat, another wild accusation. To top it off no one was even on the front, he stated he knew it was fresh and we were going to pay. They were completely trying to bait us to collect on their $500 damage hold, they had quickly had us sign at check in . They knew exactly where to look and what side to pull us up on to make the trap. I immediately told them I had already seen their previous complaint and they were quick to back pedal out of their scam. It was a terrible end to such a great day on the lake. The only reason I am even telling the story is so it does not happen to someone else. I am sure to revisit this wonderful area again and just sad that we won't be able to rent a boat on this fun lake.

We have been visiting Blue Ridge for many years and have to say our experience at the Blue Ridge Marina was very DISHEARTING!!!!!!! We had decided to go spend the day on the lake and thought renting a pontoon being we had five children and they could go tubing would be great. The lake is breath taking and the kids had a blast. However when it was time to come in we did notice the whole crew waiting our arrival we thought it seemed rather odd. The one man was directing us where to pull into the ramp while the other five men stood there. The very minute we pulled up he abruptly jumped onto the front went right over to a burn hole in the carpet and insisted we were smoking or perhaps had candles on board. I informed him no one smokes and how ridiculous to think we had a candle being it was broad daylight. He then kept on insisting the burn was fresh no less. I even told him he had my permission to go thru our belongings to look for any paraphernalia. It's DESPICABLE after giving them the amount of money we did they tried to SWINDLE more!!!!! I consider this DIRTY GREED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Blue Ridge is amazing and is only getting better with the downtown redevelopment and new restaurants & tourist sites. We had vacation homes here since 1985 & after my husband retired, we moved here full time.
What does this area offer?
Breathtaking mountain views with miles of layered views
Toccoa River (tubing, fishing, kayaks)
Gorgeous Lake Blue Ridge (boating, fishing, jet ski, tiki bar on the lake)
Active, fun downtown w/ shops, great restaurants, Scenic Historic Train, B&B's, etc
USFS (national forest) w/ hiking/biking trails, waterfalls, swinging bridge
Cabin rentals for couples, families at good prices
Mercier Orchards - huge store w/ locally grown & produced products, pies, juices, deli, housewares and farm winery products
Local Festivals & Events (see chamber of commerce calendar)
FRIENDLY PEOPLE who go out of their way to make you feel welcome
