Alesha says she had a dysfunctional childhood with a mother who suffered domestic abuse

The Britain’s Got Talent judge, 39, said she has had a fractious on-off relationship with Melvin Dixon after her parents split when she was just four.

Mother-of-one Alesha said: “I don’t speak to my dad at the moment, no. I think it’s very difficult when you don’t have a dad that lives at home with you and they have a new family.

“There were times he would be in my life and things would be brilliant and then for some reason – I’m not even sure myself why – the relationship breaks down.”

Alesha visited her electrican father, who now lives in Thailand, in 2008 but since then they have drifted apart.

She added: “I’m not one of these people who hold a grudge or has any bad feeling towards him. I just think that my relationship with my dad is very up and down and it always has been.”

Alesha was born in Welwyn Garden City, Herts, to her Jamaican father, Melvin, and English mother, Beverly Harris. She has six half-siblings.

She has previously spoken about her “very dysfunctional” childhood in which she could only watch helplessly as her mother suffered violence at the hands of her next partner.

“When I look back, it created an insecurity in me,” she said. “I was scared of the world.”
