We have a lotta fun here at Soaps.com discussing how small a role sense plays in the goings-on on Bold & Beautiful. We’ve rolled our eyes at Finn’s affection for the woman who tried to murder his wife in cold blood. We’ve snickered our way through scenes in which Poppy revealed the identity of Luna’s father (and the guy just didn’t get it). And heaven knows we laughed our asses off at Ridge chasing after Taylor on the advice of a pinecone.

But on March 18, the show had a character behave absolutely sensibly. Sanely. Thoughtfully. And as you’d expect, the character to whom she was saying logical, rational things did not take it well. At all.

As you must know by now, Hope turned down Thomas’ proposal, explaining that she had just gotten out of a marriage and wasn’t ready for another long-term commitment yet. She loved him, she just didn’t want to retie the knot. Thomas flipped out and went all poutypants. He behaved like characters on this soap usually do, as if they consider weddings regular events like brunch or mammograms. To him, it was like she was rejecting something as basic as… Tuesday. To him, it was like a break-up. To him, it was a break-up!

But Hope… bless her heart, she was talking like a real person from the real world, someone who doesn’t shrug off the idea of a marriage a year. It was spectacular and made sense — certainly more so than her outta-nowhere attraction to the guy who let her believe that he baby was dead (and whose touch used to skeeve her out).

And that isn’t a diss of Thomas, just an observation. Hope’s lust for him didn’t make any less sense than Bill’s cockamamie plan to bring down Sheila by having sex with her, R.J.’s rise to design stardom by doing a few doodles for Grandpa or Brooke staying with Ridge after he raped her. But Hope’s response to Thomas’ proposal… that made sense. And for it, this moment of a character behaving like they remember the past and think about the future, we are grateful.
