High Schools: Radnor’s Ciarrocchi stands tall, wins Central League singles title

Radnor’s Leina Ciarrocchi captured the Central League singles championship Saturday after Katherine Emmanuel of Conestoga retired in the third set.

Ciarrocchi stormed back from a 6-0 loss in the first set to take the second set, 6-4. Emmanuel retired as Ciarrocchi held a 3-0 advantage in the third and deciding set.

Strath Haven’s Sophia Anderson claimed the third-place match with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Harriton’s Josephine Kwok. In the seventh-place match, Conestoga’s Felicia Manful defeated Garnet Valley’s Elizabeth Qian 6-0, 6-1.

Girls Soccer

Adira Kitzinger’s two-goal performance propelled unbeaten Ridley to a 2-0 nonleague girls soccer victory over Phoenixville. Senior captains Jacqueline Deisler and Hannah Shay recorded the assists.

Springfield 3, Archbishop Carroll 0 >> Coryn Silberstein converted a cross from Ava Hennessy to give the Cougars the first of three goals after halftime.

Liv Gitwoski banked a free kick and Molly Henry scored on another great pass from Hennessy to make it 3-0.

Goalie Emily Boyer stopped all three shots allowed by the Cougars defense.

Gwynned Mercy 2, Marple Newtown 0 >> Caroline Drakeley was the difference maker for GM. She scored in the 27th minute and added an insurance goal for her team early in the second half. Trinity Hood finished with 11 saves for the Tigers

Boys Soccer

Sun Valley’s boys soccer team couldn’t have scripted a better way to beat rival Chichester.

Tyler Koenig sent a cross into the box where Bobbo Chambers scored the winning goal with a shot in the upper corner of the cage, lifting the Vanguards to a 2-1 win in overtime.

Chi’s Zach Bardwell forced the OT with a penalty kick in the second half. Sun Valley’s Kaiden Robinson netted the game’s first goal with 20 minutes left in regulation.

Seamus McGroary (four saves) and Jackson Nagle (two saves) shared time in net for the Vanguards (4-5-1). AJ Ricci turned aside nine shots for Chi.

Strath Haven 3, Kennett 3 >> Ethan Birch found the back of the net twice as Strath Haven battled Kennett to a 3-3 draw in nonleague action.
George Pezzeca had a strong day with a goal and two assists for the Panthers. Jack Santee had a helper as well.

Radnor 2, Episcopal Academy 0 >> Drew Warren registered both goals for Radnor in the first half.

Akira Heath had two saves in net for Episcopal (6-2-1).

Field Hockey

Lana Buerklin scored two goals and Melana Timmes added one in Sun Valley’s 3-0 decision over Chichester.

Danielle Gavlishin, Ayssa Crepack and Julia DiNicola all distributed an assist for the Vanguards. Reese Stipick (one save) registered the shutout in goal.

Haverford 3, Bishop Shanahan 0 >> Jules MacLaughlind deflected a shot from senior captain Maura Qualie for the Fords’ first goal in the opening period. Ella VanLuvender sealed the win with a pair of goals in the fourth quarter. Qualie had an assist on VanLuvender’s second tally.

Avon Grove 4, Ridley 0 >> Maddie Gordon made 12 saves in net for the Green Raiders.

W.C. Rustin 3, Springfield 0 >> Christine Ditizio, Sydney Yaw and Tess Nearhof each tallied a goal as the Cougars were blanked by Rustin.

Volleyball

Sydney Chen recorded six kills and Ella Zwilling added 16 defensive digs to lead Agnes Irwin School past Springside Chestnut Hill Academy, 3-0. The scores were 25-20, 25-7, 25-10.

Anahla Thomas chipped in with 16 digs for the Owls.
