This is random, but I came across this clip from a shitty old movie called Nightbreed on youtube. The skyline featured in the background as well as the Rocky mountains are undeniably Calgary. But on Imdb it only lists some place in the UK for where it was shot. Strange.

I remember seeing that show years ago. At some point in the show the mulleted main character made a reference to the fact that they lived in Calgary too.

Wow, thanks for pointing that out. I saw that movie more years ago than I can count and I wouldn't have picked out the Calgary skyline when I didn't live here, but now it's so obvious! Tower and all!

That and Superman 3 are now my top 2 "I bet you didn't know Calgary is in here" movies to show people. The clear-as-day shot of the C-Train in Supes 3 is unbelievably cool.

Pretty sure the dude is driving on Hwy 1A heading into the mountains, too.

You'll notice a lot of movie info on things like IMDB doesn't have good info. Being a bit of a movie nerd (and listening to far too many director's commentaries than is healthy), I've noticed many short shots that aren't well known about.

Parts of Superman I were filmed here too. I'm dating myself, but when I was a kid me and my cousin sat on a patch of grass for three hours and watched them film a scene on Hunterview drive. (The scene where the dam breaks).

I like Exit Wounds, it's also pretty blatantly Calgary. Filmed just after the Centre Street Bridge work and filmed for a week blowing stuff up on it before it got re-opened to the public.

In the "Silver Streak," Calgary stands in as Kansas City; but it's a funny shot as when it was filmed in 1975-76, the Calgary Tower is by far the tallest building and dominates the skyline.

I love how in Exit Wounds the tower features so prominently (and by the sound of things Silver Streak too). Since when did Detroit or Kansas city ever have a tower?:koko:  But I guess viewers (mostly American ones) are too dumb to notice.

My favorite part is when they are driving along and the sign says 'Welcome to Kansas City' and you can see the Calgary tower in the background

I've seen Superman III, and there are several shots of Downtown Calgary (I know I lived in Calgary for only a year, but I recognize several buildings throughout the movie), particularly in the opening sequence scene. ex: The Epcor Building.

There's been some since then, I'm just can't remember any titles at this time. RTC was also filmed in Ramsay at Ramsay Crossing. Same as either Legends of the Fall or A River Runs Through It. I always get those films confused with each other.

I believe it was Legends of the Fall. Most of that movie was also set in other parts of Alberta.

Moving beyond Calgary, lots of movies and TV shows have been shot in Kananaskis or near Bragg Creek. For example, North of 60 was shot in the Bragg Creek area, which poses for a NWT town called "Lynx River."

No part of Legends of the Fall was really set in Alberta. It took part in Montana with one short seen depicting a ride between the Montana ranch and Calgary with no indication of where along the journey they were.

I hate to be "that guy" (again), but can we move this movie talk to another thread? Very interesting, but has nothing to do with construction or development.

Thanks, I was gonna suggest the very thing. It does have to do with development though, at least as much as "hey here's a random skyline shot from a slightly different angle" has to do with development. We notice the movie locations based on the skyline much of the time.

Ah, Legends of the Fall. The movie where producers came to Winnipeg to film, because downtown Winnipeg has hundreds of heritage buildings from the right era (I believe they were trying to recreate Chicago). This was going to bring millions into the local economy at a time when things were struggling a bit. And potentially set Winnipeg up as another "Hollywood North" - the location scouts had all sorts of plans for all sorts of movies. The government was falling all over itself to provide tax breaks, etc.

Anyone remember the Simpsons episode where they tried to film the Radioactive Man movie in Springfield? Well, that episode came out a couple of years later and I would have sworn it was based on Winnipeg's experience with Legends of the Fall.

What stopped the filming? Trees. About a dozen or so old elm trees. Now, you have to understand, Winnipeg is not Calgary. Winnipeg has THOUSANDS of these old elms. Think of the ones on Memorial, but bigger. Heck, probably tens of thousands. The city gets a lot more precipitation on average than Calgary and subsequently is just a lot greener. Trees thrive there. Hundreds of thousands? Who knows. Point is there are so many trees you couldn't count them if you tried.

So why did this stop it? Turn of the century Chicago of course wouldn't have tall elm trees, and this was the days before easy digital object removal. So the producers wanted to remove about a dozen trees from the Exchange district (historical warehouse district downtown that was falling apart at the time). Not kill. Not turn into sawdust. Remove - temporarily. And re-pot in the same location when they were done. Oh, and put thousands of dollars in fixup work into some of these decaying buildings. Heck even a new coat of paint would have been amazing back then, a sandblasting would have been mana from heaven for the area.

I shit you not, NIMBY types formed a "save the trees" group, and a few hundred screaming idiots managed to kibosh the whole thing. Because of the possibility of damage to a handful of trees. In a city with thousands of them.

The local film biz never really recovered, and it was 10 years later before anything other than low-budget made-for-TV stuff was being filmed there. To this day Hollywood is still hesitant over that episode, and it's rare to see a big budget movie with many exterior shots filmed in Winnipeg - even though it's dirt cheap and there's major government incentive (the usual tax breaks, etc).

The filming moved on to Calgary and other locations, and us Winnipeggers had yet another thing to be bitter and envious about Calgary. When the Jets left a few years later, that was it.

So don't underestimate the impact of a good Brad Pitt movie to your civic ego. This was going to "put Winnipeg on the map" in many people's eyes, but instead once again the city moved into obscurity.

The next big Hollywood movie filmed in the area that I can remember? That Harrison Ford submarine movie a few years back. Why do I remember it? Because the scenes filmed there were actually filmed just north of the area. On a frozen lake. To stand in for a submarine surfacing close to the north pole and breaking through the ice. Speaks volumes towards what Hollywood thought about the city, really. :haha:

But of course how could I have cited Exit Wounds before this one.

Aside from the incredibly familiar looking streetscape of the Beltline, you really don't know it's Calgary till you see the C-Train, then at the end when they're on cemetary hill (can't remember real name) and you see a skyline shot.

One of my favourite Jackie Chan movies, Shanghai Noon, was also filmed around here - mostly Kananaskis - you won't see any Calgary shots in that one. Many moons ago when I worked for an Auction hall we auctioned off some of the props for that movie, was a cool sale.

Cool Runnings was filmed here and was about Calgary.

Other movies that come to mind are:

Dead Bang (Don Johnson)
Rat Race (Cuba Gooding Junior)
Snow Day (Chevy chase)
Open Range (Kevin Costner, Annette Benning)

Snow Day was filmed in Calgary during the winter, and unfortunately there was no snow around, so they had to use snow makers. In Dead Bang, Inglewood subs in as an L.A. ghetto :haha:

The coin flip at the beginning of the movie was filmed at McMahon Stadium just before one Labour Day game. The players on the fictional teams are old Stampeder Alumni, IIRC. I can't remember if we quite got to our seats on time to be in the crowd for the filming.

The street scenes in Exit Wounds were very clearly Toronto, in fact the whole scene that ends with the helicopter getting blown up over Centre Street started with some sort press conference shot in the square adjacent to Roy Thomson Hall (which iirc you catch at least a glimpse of.) Centre Street Bridge was a stand in for Detroits Belle Island bridge, which is bears a very superficial resemblance to:

I too am guilty of seeing Snow Dogs (with an ex) and as an aviation buff I really only enjoyed the airport parts. I think they did some actual filming of the Westjet plane, because if memory serves Cuba is about to get creamed by one in the little bush plane he leaves 'Anchorage' in.

Just thought I'd point out that a couple movies mentioned as Calgary shoots prior (Unforgiven and Shanghai Knights) were actually filmed in Drumheller. I love the movie studio practice of only citing big city centres nearby. Actually, interesting tidbit, my uncle owns a piece of the the set from Unforgiven (a saloon) and it currently resides near DRumheller in East Coulee. It's creepy that I recognize some of the areas they filmed in. Anywho, Calgary may be my home, but sadly I was still born in Drumheller. What would that make me? A Drumhellerite?

As others mentioned it was a coal town. The interesting thing today is that all the surrounding little communities like Wayne and East Coulee are slowly vanishing as coal is no longer in demand. It's astonishing how little of a trace is now left of some of these. Alot of the old buildings were actually trucked to Calgary and now reside in forest lawn. I recommend you go see the last standing remains of the coal mine that are now a museum in East Coulee (about 20mins from Drumheller). The same uncle who owns a piece of the set of Unforgiven also saved the mine structure from demolition. It's pretty neat.

There's a picture of Alec Baldwin with the owner of Rajdoot in the restaurant. There are a few other celebs that have eaten there, just can't think of who they are right now.

Any celebrity that has worked in Banff or Canmore has been to Calgary. Some of those would be Burt Reynolds, Alec Baldwin, Russell Crowe, Elle McPherson. Shitloads of others.

I've seen a few minor celebrities around Calgary. Stephen Dorf, Jay Mohr and Skeet Ulrich.

This movie has nothing to do with Calgary other than I saw it in Calgary. Saw "The Story of Anvil" tonight. Kick ass movie. Not sure, but I think tonight was it's last showing. Rent it when you see it. It's such a great story, even folks who can't stand heavy metal will love it.

There's a showing at the Plaza on Saturday, June 27th at 10:00 PM as part of the Sled Island Music Festival. Not sure how tickets/passes/etc. will all work out for that though. (info: http://www.sledisland.com).

Yeah, Drumheller was a bigger (people-intensive wise) coal mining town than it is a paleontology and tourist town today. The Drumheller valley had a peak population of 30 000 + people spread between all the towns, and Drumheller itself actually used to be incorporated as a city, and since it depopulated after demand for coal dropped, it was downgraded to a town. As O-tacular mentions, there are some ghost towns, and near-ghost towns in the area.

Correct, but surprisingly it kept it's City status until 1998, well after the end of the coal era which would have been the late 1940's to early 1950's.

I remember reading in the Herald that when Tom Berenger was in Canmore to film the movie 'The last of the Dogmen' he rented a car and drove into Calgary and also to Dinosaur Provincial park.

Does anyone have a list of actors who have filmed here? I know we've had some pretty big names.

Some big names off the top of my head

Clint Eastwood
Gene Wilder
Richard Pryor
Dustin Hoffman
Cuba Gooding Jr
Brad Pitt
Kevin Costner
Robert Duvall
John Cusack
Annette Benning
Chevy Chase
Anthony Hopkins
Matt Dillon
Gene Hackman

Some other fairly well known actors

Eric Roberts
Anthony Edwards
Dennis Weaver
Jackie Chan
Owen Wilson
Don Johnson
Jay Mohr
Seth Green
Whoopi Goldberg
Richard Dean Anderson
Peter Stauss
Tom Berenger
Morgan Freeman
Debra Winger
Aidan Quinn
Dylan McDermott
John Candy
Jill Clayburgh
Saul Rubineck
Adam Beach
Tom Skerrit
James Spader

I know there's been other actors that have been here, but maybe for filming in Banff/Kananaskis area. A friend of mine said that Alec Baldwin ate at Rajdoot down in Mission a few times.

Ahh yes. It was cheesy, but I just wanted to see if I recognized any of the city in it. This one was filmed all over the SW. I remember watching and one scene was filmed a couple blocks from my place at 26th Ave @ 33rd St. Did a double-take on that one!

That's exactly what I remember form that show too. They drive past that church.

Going into a bit more detail regarding particular locations would be cool.

I think it's in Superman III, there's a bar fight scene. I remember reading that it was filmed in the St. Louis hotel.

There's a scene in Cool Runnings where they're training and they run across a suspension bridge. I'm just going by my own guess here, but it looks very much to me like it's the suspension bridge at Sandy Beach. There's also (yet another) bar fight scene at a cowboy bar, which I seem to recall reading was filmed at Ranchman's.

For two cheesy, unheard of movies, that I only watched because they were filmed in Calgary, there are:

For All Time - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0249517/ Not a bad little TV movie actually. It's about a guy who realizes he can go back in time to a particular early 19th century town, falls in love with a woman, and keeps going back to see her. Anyway, the town was actually Heritage Park.

Anthrax - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0250214/ Nothing to do with the band, despite the image on IMDB. This was a really cheesy thing about a RCMP officer in a small town investigating cattle deaths due to anthrax and it somehow ends up with him chasing a terrorist to Calgary (I think it may even be mentioned as Calgary) who plans to unleash the anthrax into the air supply of a building. The building is the UofC. I haven't seen it in years and I don't go to UofC but I recognized the food court washrooms in the movie when I went to a couple concerts there. Also visible is a shot from Nose Hill looking down 14th Street. And there's probably a lot more notable shots in there too.

there was an old 50's movie on ch. 34 today called Bustin' Broncos that was entirely based around chuckwagon racing at the Stampede. Quite timely. I enjoyed hearing that distinctive Hollywood announcer's voice of that era extolling the Stampede.

Yup, the suspension bridge is the one at Sandy Beach. The bar fight was indeed in the Ranchman's. The Ranchman's used to have a replica of the Jamaican bobsled

Another Cheesy unheard of movie, you can add to the list is 'Portrait of Innocence'. It was filmed in Calgary, using all Canadian actors.

I actually saw that in a theatre when it was finished! I think it went straight to VHS but because it was locally filmed, they put it on the big screen for a few weeks only in Calgary. I can't recall where I saw it though...The Globe or Showcase Grand perhaps. Michael Ironside was the lead if I recall and the final scene was where the bad guy fell to his death from the top floor of the Municipal Building's atrium. Yes, it was bad, but pretty cool seeing a lot of Calgary in a movie like that.

Just the mention of Fortress brings a tear to my eye. God, I miss snowboarding there.

I've seen a few commercials filmed there as well. I was there once and they were filming a cigarette commercial. My guess is that it was for an Asian market as North America doesn't allow cigarette commercials.

I had an altercation with some security guards a few million years ago when I accidentally wandered onto the set of something featuring the Olsen Twins being filmed on the Plus 15 or atrium level of the Nexen Building (then Nova building)

I also encountered a woman claiming to be a location scout a few months ago snooping around near my house while I was walking my dog. Wasn't to talkative but presented a business card, had a rental car nearby and was taking pictures and had a $8000 HD camera around her neck.

Back in 1972, Hollywood filmed "Prime Cut" starring Lee Marvin and Gene Hackman in Calgary (with Calgary standing in for, what else is new, Kansas City).

I remember there's one long shot of the area near Memorial Drive just west of the Centre Street Bridge which unmistakenly featured the Calgary Tower in the background of it...even in 1972, when it was much smaller and less well developed, Calgary was no Kansas City lookalike but when has that ever stopped Hollywood before? ;)

If you ever drive past Ranchmans, look on the right side of the building, there is a mini Jamaican bobsled that is hanging over the enterence.

Also... was just talking to my Brother about movies shot in CGY. Exit Wounds with Segal, shots on the Centre St Bridge, etc.

Never watched Viper but I do remember it. A friend of a friend played a bad guy on the show. If my very poor memory serves me correctly, I think there was some issue about the Vipers that were used on the show being illegally resold.

That happens all the time with prop cars, just these guys were not smart enough to export them overseas. However the VIN number is a dead giveaway come registration and insurance.

The cheesy made-for-TV movie 'Santa Baby' was filmed in Calgary too (with Jenny McCarthy and Ivan Sergei). It was on the other night, and didn't know what city it was shot in until I saw Bow Valley Square screaming at me. The office shots were taken in either SECW, or Fifth Ave Place East, the cameras were moving too quickly for me to figure it out. There were lots of mountain scenes too, but I couldn't figure out exactly where they were (although I wasn't paying too much attention either).

Aired 1997-2000 on CBC.

Just did a quick search on IMDB, theres 392 movies, tv series or individual episodes of shows that list Calgary as a filming location. And thats no where near a comprehensive list as some list really specific locations rather then just Calgary in general.

and if you go in ranchmans they guys helmets are in the rafters, same with the saddle from 8 seconds and the boblsed... another movie that was partially filmed here was all gone pete tong. same guys from fubar and same doctor!

and on a side note the train scene was filmed on our tracks between drumheller and wayne, as well as rosebud. Some of the guys i work with crewed the locomotive and the cars.
sadly that line is now abandoned
