Dr. Shauna Guthrie

Dr. Shauna Guthrie, MD

23 mi from Boydton, VA
Family Physician
123 Horner St, Henderson, NC 27536
I’m a Family Medicine and Preventive Medicine Physician. More importantly, I grew up in rural areas of KS and MO and know first-hand what it’s like to avoid going to the doctor because of lack of insurance and fear of cost. Even recently I’ve delayed going because of a lack of convenience and in a small town I’m always a little concerned about privacy. I created Sunflower DPC around the idea that our current healthcare system is broken, but it doesn’t have to be. Now the official stuff: I went to The University of Kansas (KU not UK) where I received a bachelor’s degree in Biology/Genetics. I went to medical school at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia and did my residencies (specialty training) at the NH Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency and Dartmouth Hitchcock Leadership Preventive Medicine Residency. In 2013, upon finishing my training, I was looking for warmer weather than Concord, NH (easy) and found it in Henderson, NC. While here I’ve worked across Granville and Vance Counties in the hospitals, nursing homes, and private practice, as well as public health (where I still get the opportunity to serve). I treat people of all ages and one thing I absolutely love about Family Medicine that I get to know my patients, their health, and sometimes even see their families grow!

She has an B.A. Liberal Studies with a minor in French from California State University of San Bernardino (summa cum laude with highest honors, special recognition from the School of Communication for Excellence in Journalism), an M.A. Special Education with a concentration in Assistive Technology (summa cum laude with highest honors), and an M.S. Clinical Mental Health Counseling with a concentration in trauma and crisis (summa cum laude with highest honors). Some people experience more trauma than others. Success in therapy is feeling comfortable telling Audra what’s working for you—but also what isn’t working. It’s about what you can accomplish together to help you face hardship and emerge stronger and with greater purpose. That doesn’t mean your worst day is behind you. But Audra would like the opportunity to help you see the path that makes sense to you, and to provide you with tools that will help you daily. There is no handbook to make things easier, but there is a cooperation between you and Audra that forges strength out of your individuality and empowers you to see through the chaos into the calm. Audra has devoted extra time to Impact Therapy, which provides the client with immediate support and constant feedback. She doesn’t waste time and client wellbeing is the focus of each session. She has also begun NARM training for clients with severe/complex trauma and looks forward to using these models in an eclectic approach to provide the best possible outcome. The truth is, there is no perfect therapist for you. You and Audra can have common backgrounds or experiences, but in reality, two people from different walks of life can build strong bonds just by leaning into the process. Audra is comfortable hearing your story, regardless of how others might have reacted in the past—or if you’ve been too ashamed to share.

The first step in garnering health for ourselves is relieving our central nervous system of interference so our bodies can function as designed. This is accomplished through gentle, yet effective, adjustments to the joints of the upper cervical spine. Upper cervical care focuses on maintaining proper alignment in the upper neck, or cervical spine, so as to relieve the central nervous system of any interference. As an UC chiropractor, I primarily work with the atlas (C1) and the axis (C2) vertebrae. The junction where the head meets the neck houses the brainstem- the root of all life and communication throughout the body. Upper cervical care starts by checking the upper neck for subluxations- a misaligned joint that is directly inhibiting function of the nervous system. A subluxation at this level of the spine can be caused by a number of things. For example, blows or trauma to the head/neck, consistent computer work or cell phone use, sports injuries, car accidents, etc. Some causes aren't as physically traumatic such as repeated stress at home/work or grief. Once it has been determined a subluxation exists in the upper cervical spine, a specific set of x-rays are taken. These images are meticulously analyzed and measured according to the protocol laid out by the technique practiced called Orthospinology. With a specific, individualized set of numbers, patients are adjusted gently and safely with an instrument. Adjustments are delivered without guess work or pain. It is important to note that while this is where care starts, your care is not limited to the upper neck. Dr. Hill recognizes that subluxations can occur in any joint in the body, and she is able to correct those, as well, utilizing the Activator Methods protocol.

"scoping out new doctors for mental health screening and care. She immediately told me she doesn't view my issues, both diagnosed and not, as actual disorders and gave me nonhelplful "tips" to "fix" it. basically just saying "have you tried making lists? or labeling things? or using your phone calendar to set reminders?" which is very infuriating and invalidating, like I haven't thought of that before deciding to seek testing and medication. it basically felt like, right off the bat, with no reasoning or proof, she thought I was lying and just looking for pills. didn't even give me a screening or paper test, just wasted 30 mins of my day + a copay + gas to get there."

Who are pain management specialists?

Medically Reviewed by Nassim Assefi, MD on September 6th, 2023

Pain management specialists are experts in treating pain. They can help you find relief from many different types of pain caused by surgery, injury, nerve damage, and conditions like diabetes. They use various treatments, including medications and various therapies, to help you cope with your condition.

If you are living with chronic pain, seeking help from a specialist is essential. Early intervention can help you manage your pain and prevent it from affecting your daily life. Pain management specialists can develop a personalized treatment plan, offer support, and educate you about pain management.

There are different kinds of pain management specialists, including orthopedic specialists and surgeons, osteopathic doctors, rheumatologists, and physiatrists or rehabilitation physicians. Further, physical therapists and occupational therapists, acupuncturists, and chiropractors can also help you manage pain.

What kind of education and treatment do pain management specialists receive?

Pain management specialists are doctors who receive additional training in the physiology of pain - from how it develops to how pain signals transmit throughout the body. After finishing their residency training, they complete at least one year of additional training in the various aspects of pain management to receive a fellowship.

They are eligible for subspecialty board certification after they complete an accredited fellowship and become board-certified in their primary specialty. They can receive board certification from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, the American Board of Anesthesiology, or the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Pain management specialists must also complete continuing education courses to maintain their certification. They receive training in various pain management techniques, including medications, injections, physical therapy, and psychological therapy, and work with patients of all ages.

What kind of treatments do pain management specialists offer?

Pain management doctors help individuals cope with various types of pain. They offer different therapeutic approaches to address pain effectively and can tailor the treatment options to the individual's preferences, medical conditions, and location of pain.

Medical management often involves the guidance of a pain management doctor who may recommend prescription medications or injections. Prescription medications may include opioids, steroids, antidepressants, and other pain relievers. Injections, such as steroid injections, can also be used to manage certain types of pain.

Behavioral therapy, like cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), can complement pain medication and other treatments. CBT helps patients understand the connection between their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, empowering them to proactively face the challenges of living with chronic pain.

Physical therapy, performed by a physical therapist, is an effective long-term pain management solution. It focuses on improving strength, flexibility, and mobility to alleviate pain and reduce the need for excessive pain medication or surgical intervention.

Alternative therapies, like acupuncture, massage, hypnosis, and mindfulness meditation can relieve pain for some individuals. Research from the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health supports the potential benefits of these therapies for pain management.Ultimately, a pain management doctor can guide individuals in determining the most suitable combination of medical and alternative therapies for their unique pain management needs.

What should one expect during the first visit to a pain management specialist?

When choosing a healthcare professional specializing in pain management near you, look for a doctor with the training and experience to treat your specific type of pain. They should be board-certified, listen well, seem trustworthy, and have a good reputation in the medical community.

Ensure you carry a copy of all your medical records, including any recent reports, such as X-rays, to your first appointment. Also, list all the medicines you are currently taking, including any herbs, vitamins, and supplements. It is advisable to keep a pain diary to note how you feel each day.

Be prepared to discuss your pain with your doctor at the first appointment, such as where it is, how it feels, when it started, and how bad it is. The doctor will also want to know about other treatments you have tried. They will conduct a physical examination to understand your problem and order additional testing if required. Based on the results of these tests, the doctor will provide a suitable treatment plan. This plan may include medications, injections, physical therapy, or other therapies. It is essential to be an active participant in your treatment plan. This means asking questions, being honest with the doctor about your pain, and following the treatment plan.
