Flaunting it: Benedict Cumberbatch dines with girlfriend Sophie Hunter before hosting magazine party

It's been a busy few weeks for Benedict Cumberbatch as he promotes his critically-acclaimed film The Imitation Game.

But he took some time out on Saturday night to enjoy dinner with his girlfriend Sophie Hunter in London at Quaglino's restaurant.

It seems the couple were at pains not to be seen together as the arrived separately, though it is believed things are getting serious between the two after they reportedly visited her mother in Edinburgh last week.

According to the Mail On Sunday, Benedict, 38, visited 36-year old Sophie's mother Anna up in Scotland where they enjoyed the capital city's Royal Botanical Gardens.

The couple were first seen publicly together this June at the French Open but they first met when starring opposite each other in 2009's Burlesque Fairytales.

Sophie was also Benedict's date at the wedding of the actor’s old school pal, James Rhodes, but it is believed she has wanted to remain anonymous since the beginning of their relationship.

Cumberbatch's last romance was with designer Anna James, having previously spent ten years with The Thick Of It star Olivia Poulet, who it met while studying at Manchester University.

Benedict has been more concerned with homosexuality over the last few weeks having brought to the big screen the tragic genius that was Alan Turing in The Imitation Game.

Turing was the mathematical mind that cracked the Enigma code during the Second World War and ultimately save the lives of around 14 million people.

But sadly, he lived at a time when homosexuality was punishable by law and he was forced to choose chemical castration to 'cure' his sexual tendencies over prison time, which in the film they suggest was the reason he allegedly chose to commit suicide.

Benedict has spoken about his own experience of male-on-male action while at a public boarding school.

'While there was experimentation [at Brambletye School], it had never occurred to me as "Oh, this is that,"' he told Out magazine.

'It was just boys and their penises, the same way with girls and vaginas and boobs. It wasn’t out of desire.'

Speaking passionately about how Hollywood is still against its stars being openly gay, he added: 'I think if you’re going to sell yourself as a leading man in Hollywood to say "I’m gay," sadly, is still a huge obstacle.

'We all know actors who are [gay] who don’t want to talk about it or bring it up, or who deny it. I don’t really know what they do to deal with it.

'Human rights movements and sexual and gay rights movements have made huge social progress in the last 40 years, without a doubt, but there’s a lot more work to be done.

'I think it’s extraordinary that every time we get to a point where there’s any kind of trouble in society, people are scapegoated very, very, very quickly.'

On Sunday night Benedict hosted the Flaunt magazine party at Blacks having appeared as the star in it's The Grind Issue Park-Toil.

But it seems Cumberbatch has been back working with the BBC after they posted a picture of the actor on the camera monitors from the set of a new secret project.

It doesn't look like it is Sherlock related though as he was lacking the distinctive dark curls and overcoat of the TV sleuth, however, they did say it was for both BBC One and Two and coming soon.

The Imitation Game is released in cinemas on November 21 2014
