This is a brand new museum and is an absolute joy, especially when compared with the two cramped rooms in the old town hall which used to serve as the Pythagorion Museum.

The New museum, is light, cool, superbly laid out and great way to spend a couple of hours. The displays are laid out on two floors and follow a lergely chronological sequence from megalithic through to byzantine. All exhibits are labelled clearly (unusual for a Greek museum!) in Greek, German and English. There is a superb cut-away recreation of a well with objects positioned was they were found - slightl artistic licence is employed as some are repaired, but it gives a memorable display. There are also two major hoardes, one in silver from around 300BC and a gold hoard from around 1100, both of which are imaginatively displayed.

Perhaps the best is on the first floor where there is a collection of sculputure, including Archaic, classical Greek and Roman, and dominated by a massive statue of Trajan, still displaying some of the Imperial purple.

There are also a number of recreations of burials showing objects as found. These cleverly use cut aways to allow you to see positioning.

One minor quibble is that they do not allow photography, which is a shame, and in contrast to the museum in Samos Town.

Admission is free, and a visit is strongly recommended.

Opened since 2010, this compact museum gives a real insight into the foundations of Samos' history, particularly Roman culture built around the holiday villas occupied by Roman emperors during wintertime. Many objects such as amphoras, coins, jewellery and more are displayed with descriptions in Greek and English languages. The museum building adjoins an archeological site with the remains of Roman baths etc. We particularly learnt a lot from the outdoor display of columns and plaques giving the architectural names, such as doric etc.
The museum is conveniently located being about 300 metres from the harbour front, and entry tickets cost 6 Euro each. Worth visiting.

We found it very difficult to look at the many ancient ruins in & near Pythagorion. The Tunnel is closed "for repairs", the Greek Theatre appears to be made of Plywood, the Therma is closed, the castle was padlocked and the Forum is overgrown.

This new museum is very good, and the exhibits are well labelled in Greek & English, we were informed that photography within the museum was forbidden, but the excavations outside could be photographed. We liked both the museum & the excavations and hope that the Greek authorities will someday have the finances to display their great historical sites for all peoples to learn from.

Very interesting museum with extensive displays and information. Sadly we were charged full price entry in spite of being over 65 (72 and 71) apparently we were not eligible for half price tickets as UK is no longer in the EU . This is the only museum where this happened during our 5 week long, 6 island holiday.
Not impressed.

Although it is small it is worth seeing. Half an hour will be enough for a quick visit. It is a two floored building and a bit expensive to enter. You will have a great idea of Greek history.

Thousands of years of local history in this building will help you realise the importance of preserving history but also the role of Samos throughout it!

Pythagorio is the ancient "Samos", a world's heritage site and definitely a lovely place. Its archaeological museum is a hidden jewel, as it pleasant, modern, very organised, hosting remarkable pieces.
Definitely, it is a "must" if you visit Samos.

The Archeological museum of Pythagorion is situated in the upper part of the citycentre, right on the spot where it used to be the Agora of the ancient city of Samos.
The museum is relatively new, the two-storey exposition is well planned and nicely presented. The exhibits are mainly the finds from excavations of the ancient city of Samos, many shows the influence of ancient Egyptian art style. Strikingly beautiful is a female statue, made in two different colors of stone, see my pictures here.
A large part of exposition is an open-air museum in the museum yard, which is an unearthed part of the ancient Agora of Samos. The sightseeing path is built for visitors around the Agora, where can be seen streets, remains of houses, rooms with remains of frescoed walls and atriums with mosaic floors, as well as collection of stelae and columns from the site.
