Farms
We began selling chilli pepper plants in 2001. The plants, and later pickles and sauces, gained very favorable attention and in 2007 we purchased Cherwood Nursery in Chawston which we renovated. Known for its 'Pick Your Own' chilli tunnel which is open to the public, the nursery has become the destination of choice for European hot pepper enthusiasts. In addition to fresh retail and wholesale chillies we also produce a selection of gourmet sauces, spice rubs, dried, smoked, frozen, and pickled chillies processed onsite in a 5 'Stars On The Doors' production kitchen. We also 'grow-to-order' for many other European hot sauce producers, restaurants, farm shops, delicatessens, and distinguished retailers such as Harrods and Fortnum and Mason. We host tours and workshops. Our chilli sauces are available from the nursery and local Waitrose stores. Edible Ornamentals has featured in the national daily press, The Economist and leading national trade publications The Grocer and Fresh Produce Journal. Joanna featured as a chilli expert on BBC's 3 Counties Radio, Radio 2's 'Chris Evans Show', and Radio 4's 'You and Yours' and has appeared in many TV programmes including Ready Steady Cook, Economy Gastronomy, Market Kitchen, Countrywise, Gordon Ramsay's 'Ultimate Cookery Course', 'The Hairy Bikers' and ITV's 'Sunday Brunch'. Heston Blumenthol visited and filmed an episode of his Channel 4 series "Great British Food" which featured Shawn and Heston eating a Trinidad Moruga Scorpion, hottest chilli in the world at that time. Edible Ornamentals won an extremely prestigious "Grower Of The Year Award" at the annual Horticultural Weekly sponsored event in 2011. That same year we were crowned "Best Chilli Grower UK" at the Fiery Foods Festival in Brighton. We were also named 'Local Food Hero' for East Anglia by the Good Food Channel's Market Kitchen and in 2015 awarded an extremely prestigious TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence.

Visited the safari park on a weekend in April 2024.

Despite the rain at the time of our visit, the road safari was well worth the visit. We saw quite a few animals including rhinos, ostrich, tiger, lions, black bears, timber wolf, monkeys, elephants and water buffalo. The perimeter of the carnivore section was well secured and signposting throughout the road safari was generally clear. We did not see a few of the animals such as zebras and camels which could have been due to the weather conditions. Another good feature is you can complete as many circuits of the road safari as you like.

In contrast, the foot safari was a slight disappointment. Signage was less clear and many of the attractions appeared to have been closed. We saw other animals here such as sea lions, meerkats, otters, penguins and squirrel monkeys; however this part of the safari park did feel inferior relative to the main attractions within the road safari.

No queuing time at the main entrance, although we did experience a short delay in the more popular parts of the road safari, for example when viewing the lions and the monkeys. I imagine the delay would have been longer during school holidays and/or in better weather.

Would happily come back here again in the future.

It was a brilliant day out. There is so much to see and it was not too busy. It took the whole day to view each area of the zoo; it certainly is the biggest zoo in England. We walked, although you can take your car, but we did not really see the point. There is one small section that we missed that is exclusive to car drivers. The staff were knowledgeable and clearly cared for the animals. We loved that there were some animals roaming freely around the zoo. We will certainly return.

My two kids age 4 and 7 absolutely loved it and the farm kept them entertained for 5 hours. Loved the fact it had indoor and outdoor stuff to do and loads of different activities. The animal interactions were the best, from bottle-feeding lambs, petting the rabbits, grooming the pony and feeding the other animals

We really enjoyed the chilli workshop. Shawn's knowledge was amazing and he was passionate about the subject . We started with propagation right through to a taster section at the end . Fingers crossed the seeds we planted and brought home with us grow into fantastic plants .
They sell some amazing products . Hope to visit again in the summer to see some of the different varieties of chilli plants .

Lovely afternoon out with five year old . Nice food in cafe - in summer you can sit outside watching the play area . Looks suitable for up to 12 years for playground climbing frame etc . A quiet area in the cafe for those without kids too . Nice gardens . Very interesting vehicle museum with stage coaches and old cars . Free car park . Staff were all lovely

This is a great place to come and have a look around. The place is set in lovely Bedfordshire countryside. The grounds are well looked after and there is a lot to see. To mark Saint George day, the establishment had arranged a lot of reenactment that had happened over the years, as well as a falconry and things that can be bought that were traditional English made items. I wouldn’t mind coming back here again.

Good value. If you are a plane geek you’ll be there all day. With a mild interest we spent a good couple of hours there. The Swiss gardens are well worth a visit as well. Planning to go back for a flying day.

Gardens that keep on giving, and a worthy tearoom. More on that in a moment.

Comparison should not be made to Waddesdon... Ascott has been a "lived in" home until now. Waddesdon was a custom built gentleman's pad from another era of decadence. The house contents here belong to a current family, and some art works were up for auction on a previous visit I made a few weeks before. Perfectly acceptable for a family home. We're lucky to be allowed in at all to be honest.

Intriguing gardens, managed beautifully. And so many nice surprises around corners and through gaps in hedges! Really neat in every direction you look.

And when we visited on Sunday 1st October, a busy tearoom staffed by just two excellent and efficient people. Orders taken, and good coffee made by the young lady on the till, and a young gentleman in the kitchen delivering superb quality sandwiches.. and possibly the best quiche I've ever eaten. We ate happily, tipped properly and wandered into the gardens contentedly.

Can't ask more. Thank you Ascott House

Yesterday we went on the deer rut tour coordinated by Will, Dan & Oli - From the start and booking all really helpful, absolutely fantastic experience, Oli was very knowledgeable and answered lots of varied questions and the tour itself was great fun and I would highly recommend 😊 we went back to the Woburn Hotel where we had venison sausage rolls and chips which were lovely! The guys spent slots of time after talking to everyone and answering more questions, a great evening with lovely people! Think they should extend to year round as getting close to the deer was amazing with or without the rut!

One of the most memorable local museums I have visited. Enough has been retained of the original Victorian mansion, particularly the dining room, now an excellent café, and the bathroom, dressing room (with a fashion display) and bedroom. The paintings on the walls are well chosen; the pair in the bedroom were amusing: "Courtship" and "Matrimony".
Some rooms are devoted to local history; often, to visitors from elsewhere (such as me) this can be impenetrable, but the explanations assumed limited local knowledge. Particularly interesting was the account of the 1919 Peace Day riot, during which the Town Hall was largely destroyed. The military section was picturesque and informative.
The Garden is charming, and the walk from/to the station is delightful and well signposted.
