Tenet (2020)
This maybe should have been two movies instead of one.
The action & effects happening on screen are enough to give this movie a good score in my opinion, they are great, and I think a lot of people will enjoy them.
As others have pointed out, its difficult to follow along what is happening, and even what people are saying, even if you can hear every word. I have only watched this movie once, but i would imagine it would be better on a second viewing.
The problem is simply that there is too much information crammed into too short a movie. A 1 minute dialogue can contain so much information, references to earlier/ other parts of the movie, meanings, idioms, etc, that they are honestly hard to comprehend and/ or decipher, and really just go over your head.
Some of the character motivations/ expressions are also hard to understand, or just not done very well, in large part due to the hectic nature of the movie. For example, there is a woman with son, and her son is a large motivation to everything she is doing. But it doesnt hit the viewers very well, she is like "my son is important to me", and the viewer is like "yea ok, i guess". I dont know, i feel like it could have been done better. I also still dont quite understand the antagonists motivations, or how certain relationsship in the movie works.
I think Nolan should have read a page out of his own movie making books and taken some inspiration from his own Batman films. Much care is given to Bruce wayne and batman, and how they feel about being batman, the relationship with Rachel etc. I feel like time and breathing room was needed in this movie, because i kept being reminded about his Batman movies, but while also thinking "this needs more care and emotion, like in the batman movies".
I think a rewritten script for two movies would have been a lot better and solved a lot of the issues.
Basic Instinct (1992)
Keeps your attention, but not much more on top of that.
This is a thriller that starts quite interesting and manages to keep the viewers eyes at the screen, however the plot details and writing doesnt hold up well. As the plot progresses more details and mysteries are added but are not used effectively to make any potential revelations satisfying. Certain scenes drag, and there are many more with plot points or a that lack common sense. I dont know how this movie was percieved when it came out, but with todays eyes it just looks like the makers of this movie tried way too hard, and put way too much effort into making it adult and dark, instead of making an enjoyable experience for the viewer. And that is how i would best summarize my feelings of this movie, it kept my attention for two hours but it was overall disappointing and not all that enjoyable.
TLDR: The movie is ok but tries a bit too hard with being adult, is kinda stupid, but it does keep your interest even though certain scenes drag. However, at the end of the movie you kinda wish it hadnt kept your attention for two hours.
But IDK its a pandemic and im bored, so i guess still worth a watch.
The Wire (2002)
Among the top 5 best shows of all time.
This show is the real deal, the best criminal drama show out there. It touches on so many things it is difficult to spoil anything. In short, this show isnt just about drugs and crime, it is about the city of Baltimore. Every season matters, every episode matters, every person matters and every detail matters. Getting a more perfect cast is difficult, the actors and actresses really owned their characters. Even if you dont like criminal shows, the drama and relationships between the characters, the conflicts and politics, it makes the show worth your while. All the names, locations and events make this the kind of show that the viewer needs to be invested in, but it also does a great job in getting the viewer invested. It is not a documentary, it is a drama show, but it succeeds in showing the viewer a part of our world.
The Dragon Prince (2018)
enjoyable for kids, teenagers
7.5/10.
The show is overall very good, it is clearly oriented towards kids/ young teenagers, but parents can get some fun out of it as well. Does a lot with the characters along the lines of " you just gotta believe in yourself and everything will be better" and that sort of stuff. It has some annoying plot holes and a lot of the characters they dont really develop in good ways, they do a bit of a lazy job. Instead of fleshing out characters, which they could easily do by just making them less DUMB, because a lot of material is already there in the story/ events that already unfolded, to be used for the characters motivations etc etc. But they completely skip doing that and just simplify the characters. They also do a decent bit of "kids smarter than adults because the creators of the show decided it should be like that", and they do this, again, by making the adults really dumb. Kids watching this show will probably like that though, but that is what i mean, they can still do that while keeping the characters interesting and less dumb, the creators just simply dont want to do that. This makes the show overall more childlike. If they had done some tweaks with the characters and story, they could have made this a good show for adults too while still keeping it oriented towards kids. This show reminds me a lot of Avatar the last airbender, which i think does all the characters, even the clearly 'evil' ones a lot better, and that show is unfortunately still better than this one.
Love the animation though, looks great to me! But 7.5/10 is still a recommendation. See for yourself!
The Witcher (2019)
It isn't Game of thrones, but it isn't trying to be Game of thrones...
I enjoyed the first season a decent bit. Overall the production quality is good, though not very 'even'. Sometimes it is amazing, sometimes quite mediocre, sometimes the choreography & effects are great, other times quite mediocre, sometimes the filming is great, other times very mediocre, etc.
I think they should have done the writing and the pacing of the story differently. In some episodes there are quite dramatic events happening- and you just dont care. Okay, some person is dying, oh how sad it is. Except it isnt, because why would i care about that character? Why are they filming it in a way as if they think it is dramatic for me? It isnt, i barely know what character that is. The very first episode suffers from this, though later episides kind of "fill you in" on why you should care, and stuff. But thats what i am saying, this mixed pacing of the different characters, the mixing timelines, it isnt done very well IMO. They should have done it differently, maybe even skipping the whole Ciri storyline the first season, and focus more on Geralt and Yennefer, maybe just doing Ciri at the end.
I think they should have done casting a bit differently. The actress who plays Yennefer is doing the best she can, but she is the wrong person for the role, Yennefer should be a much older actress, not some teenager/ young adult, they shouldve picked someone in their 30's/ 40's for the role, used the character in the video game for inspiration.
Acting is mostly quite good, and there is quite a bit of humour in this show, which i like. Though it sometimes feels like the directing is quite bad, so the acting comes across as being 'awkward' at times, if i had to pick a word.
As the title says, this isnt game of thrones. I already mentioned the timelines, the format of the show from episide to episode is different from GoT. This is still an "adult" show, like GoT, there is gore, nudity and swearing. I know the books tackle some 'adult' themes as well, and some of them are touched upon in the first season as well, but i feel like some of them could have been done a bit better in the show, with better writing, directing and casting. This show also has way more focus on fantasy and the supernatural compared to GoT. The word 'destiny' will appear a lot in this show. I would say the Witcher is kind of like a mix between Buffy the vampire slayer and Game of Thrones. If that makes sense.
Overall a positive score for me, but i think some of the choices they made here in the first season were the wrong ones, and they cant really be fixed for a 2nd season. So thats a shame.
See (2019)
pretty good for the first few episodes but some choices are so weird
Why is everyone blind? why? This series would have been better if they were just all regular humans with normal eye sight, and they should have made involved more mystery and fantasy elements into the world, and into the story (since if they all can see like normal, parts of the story would have to be different).
As it is now, the show is kinda stupid. I cant be too specific, but i think most people who watch the show will know what i mean. The world just doesnt really make sense.
Otherwise a beautiful setting for a fantasy, some shots/ parts of the landscapes of the world do look amazing. Very pleased with jason momoa as well, he is doing a good job.
One last thing: When the characters are "praying", they are doing something very, uhm, weird at the same time. It is just so weird, and i have to ask why? Just why... Weird choices. I get they want to make this an "adult" show or whatever. But it is just so weird, it takes you out of the moment, ruins immersion, and kinda nasty honestly.
Joker (2019)
very good movie, but...
(The title of the movie is "Joker". You know what this movie is about. This review contains very very minor spoilers, but you most likely know them already, because you read the title of the movie.)
This movie is pretty worshipped at the moment, and a lot of people are saying it is a masterpiece. I am not sure if it is or not, in my opinion it is definitely not a clear yes at least - which means the same as a no at the moment.
So this movie is esssentially a backstory of the Joker. (Duh) And it does this in actually quite a believable, and even "realistic" way.
This movie is quite uncomfortable, the most uncomfortable bits come from finding out details about the main characters private life, how he is as a person. Because people like this kind of exist in real life (but things are dramatized in the movie). And the movie uses this as a way to tell, as i said earlier, a believable Joker backstory.
However, sad to say, as it is a movie with some quite uncomfortable parts, those can also in a way be translated as "boring". I am not saying the movie is boring, it is just that those scenes are basically just designed for Joaquin pheonix to display his acting talent and how he is the character, and how the character is "real". And dont get me wrong, he is great. But these scenes only serves that purpose. But in a sense they are also necessary for the backstory to work, so basically the movie MUST have these of what are essentially "boring" parts. Which is a dilemma, i guess.
The best parts of this movie are easily the parts when you see the TRUE Joker, those glimpses of the comic book villain. And Joaquin pheonix looks..... AWESOME in those scenes. But they are few...
Looking forward to a sequel, or a future movie with Joaquin playing the Joker!!!
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
stupid movie but...
People have made this movie the scapegoat for everything that was ever wrong with star wars. People see the original trilogy as an absolute masterpiece without flaws, and while there was nothing like the original three movies when they came out, the way people worship them is bothersome.
Now, i also recognize a lot of the things wrong with The Last Jedi, there is a lot of 'stupid' in this movie, and the setup this movie gives for the one after is absolutely atrocious. How is a sequel to this movie supposed to surpass this one, or even live up to anything the first two already set up, without being forced to do a lot of 'stupid' on its own?
So why the high score from me. Honestly i would rate it lower if other people were more measured in their ratings as well, but no, 1/10, people seem to think this movie is the worst thing to happen to the star wars universe ever, they treat that as a way more important issue that the actually good or bad sides of this as a movie. Meanwhile they complete fail to properly criticise The Force Awakens, and all the stupid s**t in that.
And guess what? Despite all of the 'stupid' in this movie, all the 'makes no sense', all the bad choices and all the parts that completely mess with the story and the star wars universe, it is STILL a more exciting, more thrilling, and more enjoyable experience than The Force Awakens.
The first few hours after i had finished watching this movie, i easily thought it was the best one since The Empire Strikes Back of the star wars movie. It wasnt until more reflecting that i realised more and more flaws with it.
So, there you have it, it is one of those types of movies.
Game of Thrones (2011)
I loved the show, and rated it 10/10. Up until season 8....
I loved the show up until season 8.
I think season 6 is easily the best season. I thought season 7 was awesome when it came out in 2017, but as i rewatched all seasons before season 8, I realised that season 7 has a lot of the same misses and mistakes as season 8, however not nearly as bad, still one of the best shows ever around, and still very recoverable.
In short, this show needed both season 7 and 8 to be full 10 episode long seasons, and the show probably required at least another season on top of that, a 9nth season, in order to end on a good note.
I dont how to explain this without spoilers, but season 8 just sucks, in every way. Honestly, the issue isnt just that it is 6 episods long, the way these 6 episodese were made is bad as well. There is a very good youtube video in which a person gives their own version of season 8, how he thinks eveything should have happened, even within the constraints of 6 episodes. And it is so much better than what is actually in the real season 8.
The show is overall still one of the best shows ever for the first 7 seasons, but i have to bump down my score just by how terrible the ending of this series is.
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance (2019)
great family show
I have not seen the original The Dark Crystal movie, but i came with an open mind. The puppetry is quite amazing, and very impressive. The acting in the show feels like normal TV show acting, just that they replaced the actors with puppets. And speaking of actors, the voice acting is absolutely great! I really enjoy the voice acting for all the skeksis, the voice acting are making those characters great and memorable.
I think they have made some great choices when it comes to what to use special CG effevts for, and what to use puppetry for.
I would like to warn though, the puppetry takes a couple of episodes before you get used to it. At first you will be bothered by how the voice acting and the mouth movement dont always sync up so well. I also noticed as the show went on that puppets are great when done well, but also very limiting in many ways. A puppet just simply cant express emotion and intention and all the subtlety that a human face can, or even what a well made cartoon face can. There are moments when it almost reaches uncanny valley territory in this show, which takes you out of the moment.
There are some plot holes/ stuff that seems stupid, but i think mostly adults will be bothered by them or even notice them. This show feels in many ways like it was tailored for kids, but adults can also enjoy it, seems to me like a good family show.
Chernobyl (2019)
Five episodes long, still one of the best shows to watch!
I have long been fascinated with chernobyl and the accident, because it is horrifying, spooky and intriguing. This show is a dramatisation of the events, it is telling a story about lies, deception, and also heroism. If you are interested in the broad details of the chernobyl accident, this show works great as a semi-documentary (just because of how well made the show is) and as a great thriller series. Just keep in mind that this is entertainment first of all, it is dramatisation. There are fictional events in the show, it is not an exact re-telling of the accident & the events that followed as best we know, but it is close.
I knew a lot about chernobyl coming in, and it is hard to describe but this show just hits you in a way. This is one of the best shows I can think of recently. It is only five episodes long, but is well worth watching. If you dont know anything about chernobyl- watch it. If you know everything about chernobyl- watch it anyway!
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
A decent end of an era.
Infinity war was overall a better movie, but this movie had the disadvantage of being the follow up to that movie. A good chunk of this movie is essentially remembering what happened during infinity war. The struggle against Thanos in this movie... It just isnt done in a satisfying way.
Before Infinity war came out last year, it was already confirmed there would be another Avengers follow up this year. It was speculated that Endgame was actually going to be called "Infinity war part 2". Unfortunately, this is Endgame, but it SHOULD have been Infinity war part 2. I know that is very vague, Im trying to be vague, but essentially because of what happened in Infinity War, it was pretty much impossible to make a sequel which feels like it even is the same story with the same consistency & epic feel. Or at least, that is not what we got.
Captain Marvel kinda sucks in this movie. She is a boring character with magic powers. Ughhh great. In hindsight, the tease in Infinity war was cool, but it makes it into a big letdown. And this is kind of the story of the whole movie, if Infinity War was the teaser. (Although it isnt quite that bad, this movie is still pretty good, unlike Captain Marvel in it.)
Mortal Engines (2018)
Cool designs dragged down by bad plot, bad writing, bad acting, bad pacing. Only minor spoiler in review.
I enjoy "punk" genres like cyberpunk, steampunk etc. I like sci-fi. I like post apocalypse themes. I recently watched Alien: Covenant and i can already say that movie was way better than this one.
The two main characters, a girl named Hester and a guy named Tom have ZERO chemistry. It is cringeworthy when they try to put on this romance between them. The dialogue is stupid, lots of cliches and tropes, predictable as all hell. There is nothing interesting.
The world is stupid, or at least not explained well. Why do these moving cities even want that the "anti tractionists" are keeping from them? And why does that make them "bad" and the "anti tractionists" good? No idea. Why do these moving cities exists in the first place? And why is this post apocalyptic world so green and vibrant, and seem full of life?
The plot just sort of happens, and the viewer couldnt care less. The main character, Hester, is introduced so casually. Its like, oh there is some girl with a red hood. She is running around trying to look serious. And she wants something. Oh kay. Oh look a giant tractor/ city thing. Oh random rivalry between two guys and a girl that leads to nothing. Oh exposition about stuff i dont care about, that still isnt properly explained.
There are details with other characters that go nowhere. And new characters are introduced so randomly throughout the movie, and they all suck. It is like they read a book with a whole bunch of characters, and they want all the characters in the movie so they can be "faithful" to the book. But the characters end up being next to useless in every way.
There is this cool robot character, but he is like all other characters. Stupid. He wants to chase Hester until the end of the world over something silly, it is just so stupid.
The acting is bad, and the dialogue isnt making things better. Hugo Weaving, the Tom boy, and the robot were the only decent actors. And that chinese woman was pretty okay, but she said so many cringey things.
It is pretty creative though. It looks cool. It has cool desgns. I personally have my own fantasy/ steampunk ideas, and this movie provided a lot of visual inspiration to me. It is obvious that a lot of money and talent was dumped into this movie. Unfortunate waste.
I give 5/10 because an 11 year will probably think this movie is really good and cool and stuff, and that is something at least. I have seen worse. This movie has thumbprints of a good movie, but it needed to get basic stuff right first.
I find it interesting that this movie has a higher metascore than Warcraft. That is a joke, Warcraft was not an awesome movie but better than this one in every way.
Alien: Covenant (2017)
Better than what other people say. It's not trash, but hear me out...
So as I said, this movie is NOT "trash" as other people have put it. Far from. It is however an underwhelming & kinda stupid movie.
The thing is that this movie probably could have been amazing. Why do i say this? Because the production quality is very good. The effects are very good. There are interesting concepts & very VIVID & disturbing imagery. The dialogue is at times, by specific characters, quite interesting and provoking. This movie also gives some interesting background on the Alien 'universe'. And some of the acting is pretty good.
However, as i said, it is very underwhelming. There are too many irrelevant, stupid characters, irrelevant stupid things happening, stupid dialogue. So much stuff is so simplified. But there is deeper stuff underneath, and that is why this movie being so silly is such a shame.
I still give it a 7/10, because it is totally still AT LEAST an average/ OK movie, probably a bit better, and there is also interesting, high value production & thought underneath. Poor execution though overall.
The Haunting of Hill House: Steven Sees a Ghost (2018)
Strong first episode
This episode is good, it immerses the viewer and makes it interesting. Good transitions between scenes, good pacing
The Haunting of Hill House: Open Casket (2018)
Slow
This episode was slow. The writing is bad in this episode, how can a character be so weird & stupid? I know this is only two episodes in, but the focus on the Shirley character really isnt done well, and the requirement on the actor is too high, and even if the acting was spot on (which it isnt) it still would have been a slow episode in which the main character makes f-ed up decisions. Dialogue could have been better as well.
This episodes loses the viewer, breaks immersion.
Warcraft (2016)
Good Fantasy Epic that *could have been* absolutely Great- but isn't...
Some spoilers about the story, but most spoilers are with how this movie IS/ was made. (How the acting is, how the certain scenes are shot etc). Rather than how the Story is.
I wont go too much into what the story is about in this reviews, other people have done that. Nor will i write very much about what this movie does right, other people have done that. My review will mostly focus on some of the problems with this movie.
I played some WoW, but i played a lot of Warcraft 3. Warcraft 2, but especially Warcraft 3 (both reign of chaos and the frozen throne) had a big impact on me, and I love the characters and the stories in the Warcraft universe.
The reason i write this review is because I CARE about Warcraft...
Lets begin.
The problems with this movie as what i would like to call "basic movie stuff". The effects, the CGI, the Orcs, or the story as a whole (the story on paper) ARE NOT big problems with this movie. In fact, the effects on the Orcs, and the Orc characters in general are among the best things in this movie. And the story can be EPICLY GOOD- as long as you get the basics right...
What i mean with "basic movie stuff" I mean the acting, i mean how certain characters are cast and portrayed, how certain scenes are shot, what emotional connections there are to characters from the viewers and between characters themselves. Things that are not strictly exclusive to fantasy movies, but for ANY movie with characters. Basic.
Let's take the word "plot" and lets make a verb out of that word. This Warcraft movie is pretty "plot-y".
Some examples of "basic movie stuff" problems:
1.The human main character (Lothar)'s son is just a plot device, nothing else at all.
2. The acting and casting of Lothar was at times... very bad. As with **most of the human cast.**
3. The decision Draka the orc character made when coming to a river... Lets just say it seemed to be a very light-hearted decision. The scene is fine on paper, but the situation needs to seem more desperate for the decision to make sense.
4. Some characters motivations for their actions aren't explained or even the least bit HINTED at WHAT.SO.EVER. (Even when i know there are some) If you don't already know the story, with some characters you'll just say to yourself "okay then i guess" with what their actions are. They just kind of just decided it was a good idea to do this or that. There are with these things i am annoyed at when it comes to this movie that is actually story related.
5. Some scenes are shot very... weirdly. There is this scene with Garona, the queen and Lothar in which the camera pans down on Lothars back and hes holding a gun... This scene makes zero sense. What is it trying to say? That he doesn't trust Garona??? But i mean... yeah... lets just say that it is a bit... weirdly made... And there are multiple of these kinds of scenes in this Warcraft movie. It seems as if they wanted many different minor stories and characters conflicts, so they shot these scenes, but then decided to skip them.
5.5 There is a scene close to the end of the movie that is shot in slow motion... And i get what is happening here. And i overall like the human actor. But this scene needed to be done A LOT better. The scene/ the story of the scene is fine on paper, but the way it is shot, how that line is delivered. It was almost a bit silly/ cringeworthy... Also, why the hell is there a scenes in which Medivh is half naked playing with mud. WHY
6. Its impossible for me to explain this all with 1000 word limit, but basically this movie needed to have a slower start to ease people into the world(s), and what peoples normal struggles and everyday lives are in the world(s). Basically, show the world(s)!! This is to better understand characters actions etc etc, but also some plot points, why certain things happen, why certain big decisions are made (the first example where this is kind of a problem is less than 10 mins into the movie). LOTR does this pretty good, by starting in the Shire, let us get used to the world, and understand the characters. This movie needed something similar.
I heard 40 minutes was removed from the final cut. So now we have a 2 hour 3 minute movie. This explains a lot of problems with this movie. THIS IS A FANTASY EPIC. GIVE US 3 BLOODY HOURS FFS!!
The reason my title is that this movie COULD HAVE been absolutely GREAT (LOTR levels of GREAT) is because if they would have just gotten the basic movie stuff right- the problems in this movie start to disappear. And those problems are what drags this movie down.
Credit to the Orc actors, they are what held this movie together!!
I really hope they learn from these mistakes in a potential sequel.
Zootopia (2016)
overpraised, over-hyped, but still a good movie with good animation
Basic story summary badly written by me: A rabbit named Judy Hopps has dreamed her whole life of becoming a police officer in the city of Zootopia. Part of her dream of working in Zootopia is for her to live in a place where she isn't judged based on what animal she is, which is what she had experienced in her childhood on the countryside. After being excluded from a case involving missing animals at her job and assigned to parking duty instead she soon realizes that things were not quite as she imagined in the city. In her own investigation into the case of the missing animals, Judy herself starts to question if there is some legitimacy or not to whether different animals are inherently different from each other.
Disney movies are good movies. It is as simple as that. Zootopis does however NOT do anything groundbreaking, and not even anything particularly new. Using animals as a way to portray differences between characters is nothing new, using animals as characters is nothing new, the humour is GOOD but nothing extraordinary, the story itself is nothing special, and the moral of the story is, again- nothing new.
The movie doesn't do anything bad, the movie is overall good and fine. The characters are good and many of them pretty funny. The story is good even if it is nothing new, and it is mostly catered to children.
If anything, i would say that the whole moral message about peoples equal value (or whatever) often feels a bit too forced, and that the filmmakers at times tried too hard with it.
I don't really understand how this has gotten almost perfect scores from critics. There is nothing groundbreaking here, but it is a solid movie. It didn't really make a big impact on me, the only thing i would say is that the animation is really quite impressive.
I imagine that kids would really like this movie, there are animals and friendship and stuff.
