I’m calling this film February because the Blackcoat’s Daughter is just a silly title.
I’ve said so many times before and I’m pretty sure you’ll agree, comedy and horror are probably the two most divisive genres we have. What makes you laugh or what scares you is such a personal affair that, to me at least, most films in these genres either work or they don’t.
Where horror is concerned, what unnerves me most is seeing people lose control and being aware of it. To me, the best of these films reside in an area that comes too close to reality. The Blackcoat’s Daughter aka February avoids usual cliched tropes and put me smack dab in a dread drenched world I never hope to visit.
I knew nothing of the plot going in, but was told by friends that “this shit would be my jam”, well, this atmospheric take on loneliness shit was Indeed my jam. I’d gladly pair this with The Witch for a grimly fiendish double bill overflowing with shady vibed atmosphere that lives deliciously.
Osgood Perkins has a bright future.
The first time I watched this, I rated it 4 stars but naw...this is a 5 star movie right here. It’s one of the greatest examples of genuine slow burn dread that I have ever seen and kids, it is terrifying. Both times I watched this I was completely alone (except for Oscar of course duh) and I had all the lights off and I am 100% convinced that it’s the only way to watch this and truly appreciate it.

There's an actress in this who sort of looks like Emma Roberts. It's not uncanny but it's enough that I was able to convince myself it was her and I just wasn't as familiar with what Emma Roberts looks like as I thought I was. So then when actual Emma Roberts showed up I was shocked by yet another silver screen miracle.

A gruesome winter horror movie with an unexpectedly hard ending that leaves you feeling permanently uneasy because of its ominous atmosphere. It offers horror in the head, in which a constantly growing mood of doom is conjured up and in the end it hits you where it hurts the most.
"The Blackcoat's Daughter" is arthouse horror with depth that you probably have to watch several times to be able to explore it in more detail.

The intrinsic leering misogyny of the Satan's School For Girls movie (the classic working exploitation premise being that all those chicks getting their periods synced up can't be anything but a tool of the Devil) gets substituted for the grim specters of loneliness and isolation, which is solid on paper but just isn't as much fun. Maybe it's just me but these very polished, self-consciously stylized genre films with their ostentatiously off-balance compositions and drone soundtracks are getting a bit same-y.
The Blackcoat’s Daughter doesn't have the most original storyline regarding its source of evil, but director Oz Perkins, son of the legendary Anthony Perkins, surely has a way of warping narratives and exercising styles, so the whole experience remains largely intriguing, and the limitations of the script only reveals themselves at the very end, showing us Perkins' manipulative powers in the most complimentary manner.
With its fractured timelines and intertwined perspectives, The Blackcoat’s Daughter patiently builds its own isolated, icy world not privy to any curious outsiders. Two schoolgirls are forced to stay in their boarding school during winter break, while another seemingly unhinged girl is on her way to the same location, and Perkins simply wouldn't provide any other…
