Currently using the Beta version of iPlayer on my Samsung SmartHub and it's flawless. Safe to say that this way of watching TV has totally changed the way we consume TV by having everything on demand. Of course we've had this from day one but it keeps getting better.
BBC on the computer lets you save your favorite program list but on this app, you have to always search for your shows. Very annoying and the option to join a live broadcast rarely works. The second option to just go to the beginning of the show and watch it, usually works but sometimes I'd just rather watch the news live and catch up what I missed on the website.
It used to work great but recently (in the last few days) it stopped working, Not it's just the constant buffering circle of death. Occasionally on low resolution settings in may splutter into life for a few seconds before stopping again.
I'm able to watch iPlayer on my computer perfectly using the same connection and can watch Netflix in hi-res on the same connection, so it's not the connection (I have 100mbps). And BBC iPlayer USED to work great too. But not any more, the recently update (27th September 2016) killed it. It is no more, it is dead, they completely ruined it in the latest update.
The Freeview box for our second TV (in the kitchen) packed up recently and I thought that buying an Amazon Fire TV Stick would better way of viewing bearing in mind that our main TV in the living room is connected to Sky via a dish. I was particularly interested in three free apps which I downloaded, namely BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub and TV Player. Using these three apps would give me a similar range of channels to those I had received using the Freeview box. I had already experience of using these three products either via Sky or on my laptop with no problems at all. Firstly I downloaded the BBC iPlayer app with which I was very pleased as it performed exactly as I expected. I enjoyed watching “Breakfast” on BBC1 live and catch-up on a few other BBC1 programmes as well, all of which displayed a minimum of buffering. Secondly I downloaded the ITV Hub. When I tried to open the app it just displayed the Welcome Page of my BT Router to the soundtrack of BBC1 live. I tried to navigate away from the page using the Fire Stick remote but all I could achieve was a return to the Fire Stick's home page. I thought that the app might have had a problem in downloading so I deleted the app and reinstalled it with the same result. Thirdly I downloaded TV Player. When I tried to open the app it displayed the home screen which is familiar to me. On selecting a channel to view live, the current screen shot on that channel appeared, completely frozen without any sound. I managed to get back to the home screen by using the remote and tried several different live channels including BBC1 all of which failed in the same way. Lastly in desperation I tried Channel 4. On opening the app, the home screen did not appear to load correctly at all. To summarise, I found Amazon's “Help” distinctly unhelpful offering no explanation as why only one out four apps is working correctly. For me the Fire Stick is a complete waste of money and it looks as though I will have to purchase another Freeview box if I want to watch anything in my kitchen apart from BBC programmes.
Content you cannot do without, and it is all FREE!!
UPDATE 12-09-15 Well, after a week I need to update my review. The app is way faster than it used to be on my (not so) SMART TV, BUT... it buffers and in the end it makes my Fire TV lose connectivity. I get a bit less than 30 mins worth and then the problems begin. I see the spinning circle of death. At times it clears itself, but more often than not it doesn't. After a while the box says it has lost connectivity and I am at a loss as to what to do.
I am currently using a TP Link powerline adapter to connect to the internet which works fine with Amazon - I can watch that without any issue - so the problem must be with the app. (I have already changed ethernet cable, just in case, but, as expected, that makes no difference)
Update 29-01-19 I had forgotten about this review. All my problems are long gone. It has worked perfectly for some time and at long last the app is improving with login details and works across multiple platforms.
A good app, quite a bit of choice now that programmes stay active for 1 month rather than a week as previously. Works ok but a bit clunky and hard to find less popular programmes, I prefer the method used by ITV Hub to search. Would be better if it had more films but I suppose copyright issues prevent this. Overall it is great for catch up and the lack of adverts is a big bonus. Never need to use my hd recorder anymore for BBC programmes. Biggest drawback with Catch Up services is the inability to fast forward or rewind and see the picture in real time, like you can with a VCR or hard disc recorder, instead you have to guess when you have gone forward or backward enough just using the time at the bottom of the screen.
This was reviewed based on usage on my Amazon Fire TV Stick.
My better half was wanting to catch up with strictly and asked me to help. Thought iPlayer was the logical place to start, so I installed it onto our Firestick. Installation was quick and painless and it worked as it should.
The app was quite responsive and it was easy to move between the various sections, even though the sections were very cluttered and unorganised we managed to get there in the end.
There was little to no buffering and the quality on our 4K TV was very good, at least on par with 1080p content.
My main criticism is that BBC have missed a great opportunity here. The app would become 500% more useful if they made live streaming of both radio and TV available within the iPlayer app.
Positives:- Free Easy to use Responsive Good quality streaming
Negatives:- Can seem a little cluttered and unorganised Can't play BBC live content
Would I buy this again? Yes Would I recommend this? Yes Good value for money? Have to answer yes as its free!
Not sure what's happened lately, but just this week the startup/exit performance has degarded significantly. On my Fire Cube, iplayer now takes at least 40 seconds to correctly startup and the same to exit. Done all the usual stuff, logged out/in, rebooted router, pwered cube off/on, uninstalled/reinstalled, deleted cache and data (though, curiously, login details were retained after deleting data! ).
I'm not going nuclear option and resetting cube to factory settings, not for one flaky app.
