Audience Member Awful, awful, awful. You would think with Cuba and Dreyfus it would have been ok. It wasn't. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Saw this come up on Hula and thought why not. Now I'm thinking, why??? It wasn't all bad. I liked the location and the shots, and there was a gritty hopeless feel to the movie that I think works based on the storyline, but that's where it ends. The movie was messy, overlong and could have been cleaned up and edited down for less time. I was also surprised by Dreyfus' unconvincing, phoned-in performance of Yuri, a Russian gangster. This is the man in the timeless "Mr. Holland's Opus"? What the heck happened to him. His Russian accent was so cringy that it reminded me of Nick Nolte's "Chef Boyardee" Italian in Lorenzo's Oil. Like most modern movies, there is intent in being "inclusive," but all they produce is a bunch of terrible stereotypes. The white drag queen who is liberal with the "n" word (really? c'mon...) surely sealed the fate of this film and demonstrated more of what was done wrong than right. I was hoping for the best for Cuba Gooding, Jr, but this film is best forgotten or fed to the alligators. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member What a sad film to mark a directorial debut. First of all, could there be ANY more stereotypes in one film? From the horrifically ugly Drag Queen or Trans character who freely uses the "N" word and is White, to...well...everyone. Richard Dreyfuss....what happened? Jesus man, you once held Oscar...you're gonna need a bigger tow truck to get this one off the heap...why didn't he scream "I couldda been a contenda!" Famke...what's up? Every sleazy stereotype of every LA photographer, ever? All in one? I applaud working actors and craftspeople crafting their trade, but whoever financed and green lit this script really should rethink why. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member This is not like any movie Cuba has ever done, one question WHY? Smh Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/26/19 Full Review Audience Member If you're a fan of Cuba Gooding Jr, you know what to expect here. He's really developing as a fascinating independent film maker who enjoys defying expectations. Bayou Caviar is pulpy drama: sexy, fun, and interesting. It doesn't go where you expect it to. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member I love this movie itï¿ 1/2 1/2 1/2 1/2 1/2 1/2 1/2 1/2 1/2(TM)s so good ï¿ 1/2 1/2 1/2 1/2 1/2 1/2 1/2 1/2 1/2~ thanks to Cuba Gooding Jr. love it... Owen Gleiberman Variety You can't say "Bayou Caviar" doesn't have twists, but it has the wrong ones. Oct 5, 2018 Full Review Noel Murray Los Angeles Times [Gooding Jr.] had some nifty New Orleans locations and a cast that includes Richard Dreyfuss, Famke Janssen and Katharine McPhee - as well as himself. But the movie's still a mess. Oct 4, 2018 Full Review Ben Kenigsberg New York Times Despite seamy, well-chosen locations, Mr. Gooding is way too heavy-handed in his scoring and visual choices. But the movie deserves credit for its untempered nastiness. Oct 4, 2018 Full Review Mike Scott Times-Picayune Bayou Caviar might sound like some sort of sublime South Louisiana delicacy, but it's really more like gas-station sushi. That is, it beats starvation -- but only just. Rated: 1/5 Oct 24, 2018 Full Review Roger Moore Movie Nation Cuba Gooding Jr.'s directing debut is overlong and overly complicated -- messy -- but well-cast and occasionally entertaining.
