This castle is situated in the town Frankenstein, about 20 minutes of driving from Kaiserslautern (don't confuse it with another Frankenstein castle located in Hessen close to Darmstadt).
There are several ways to get to the castle from the town. I prefer to start close to cemetery. It is quite steep, but it offers amazing view to the castle together with church, cemetery chapel and beautiful historical railway tunnel entrance. After about 15 minutes of walking you will reach ruins of the castle with beautiful views to the town and surroundings.

There are two Burg Frankenstein in Germany. One is a Burgruine in Frankestein, Germany, another is a castle in Muhltal, Germany, near Frankfurt. This address posted takes you to the ruins. If you look at pictures taken above, you will see two different castles. Be sure you use a different source to navigate if you wish to see the Castle, not the ruins. Both are worth visiting!

Very impressive castle in the top of a cliff with free access-at least early in the morning- and amazing view in the fields! Also the road is good enough!

Why would you get so close and not visit Frankenstein’s castle? After walking around the grounds there is a good restaurant with good German food and beer. A friendly staff who speak enough English to get the job done, a good half day trip. The Castle itself is in disrepair but there are many structures standing and available for viewing.

Beautiful hike to castle ruins. Dogs allowed. Small children should be carried and closely supervised.

Not to be confused with another Frankenstein Castle near Darmstadt, this one is situated literally on the top of a railway line connecting Neustadt to Kaiserslautern. If you're coming by train, as you exit the station and turn right along the main road, there are two ways of getting there: (1) through a car servicing garage (5 mins away), and (2) pass the church and cemetery (10 mins away). I suggest the latter, as you get to pass by some interesting sites, namely the church and a couple of WWI and WWII memorials. There is also a rough map of the walking trails at the start of the trail there, so you know which way to go. The trails are in some areas steep, but nothing too difficult if you tread slowly

Once you're at the ruins, you get a good sweeping view of the town below, and the entrance into the castle is free. It's quite a small place, but there are a several stairs to climb around which makes it a little more interesting to explore. There is nothing much else to see around the area except a hut and some benches, plus a lot of signboards on bird and nature conservation.

I wish there were more signposts around to tell visitors a little more about the castle itself, but it is nonetheless an interesting place to visit if you happen to be passing by the area.

Frankenstein Castle is a beautiful ruin, like many other undiscovered castles and ruins in the Pfalz-area. It lies on a spur in a valley, above the village of Frankenstein (Rheinland-Pfalz; near Kaiserslautern) and it’s not to be confused with the castle in Nieder-Beerbach (Hesse).

Underneath a railway crosses through a tunnel. The whole setting looks like a model railway scene!

I had no idea that the castle was real & that Mary Shelley was really there. Lots of history for the background of her book. Fascinating history.

Great hike up past the church and took the trail to the ruins. Definitely worth a visit... No cost to visit and the walk up not to challenging.
