Geographical location

Florida is a state on the east coast of the USA between the Atlantic Ocean (in the east) and the Gulf of Mexico (south and west). The area consists of the Florida Peninsula and the so-called Florida Panhandle on the mainland.

At its southern end, the peninsula flows into a chain of scattered islands, the so-called Florida Keys. This chain of islands is connected by more than 40 bridges and can therefore also be accessed by car. Key West is the southernmost point of the USA, from here it is only 90 miles to the coast of Cuba.

Around 18% of Florida’s total area (85000 miles²) consists of water, with the US states of Alabama and Georgia to the north.

For many years Florida has been one of the most popular travel destinations in the USA. Besides the Florida Keys, Miami Beach, the theme park metropolis Orlando, Saint Petersburg, Fort Lauderdale and the swamps of the Everglades are among the hotspots in Sunshine State. Capital of the state is Tallahassee.

Climate in Florida

Halloween Decoration (Chad Sparkes) [flickr.com] CC BY
License Information available under 'Proof of Image Sources' No state in the USA experiences more sunny days than Florida, which therefore rightly calls itself a “Sunshine State”. More than 300 days are on average in all regions, some places like St. Petersburg and Clearwater even advertise up to 361 sunny days a year. Due to the breeze from the sea, the summers are somewhat softened and even the winters remain pleasantly warm at around 25 °C (during the day).

No wonder millions of visitors from home and abroad visit the sunny holiday resorts in the southeast of the United States every year. Nevertheless, the Florida climate can be divided into two different climate zones: The northwest of the state can be described as subtropical, in the remaining part a tropical-humid climate prevails. The north is therefore always a little cooler.

In summer Florida is occupied by the rainy season between May and September, which nevertheless brings up to 10 hours of sunshine a day and also has numerous days with the best weather to offer. However, temperatures in July and August reach muggy-hot peaks above 33 °C, and most precipitation falls in Florida between June and September.

Due to the special location of the peninsula, Florida can also be affected by tropical storms and hurricanes in summer. The greatest danger of these hurricanes lies in the period August to October. Extremely severe hurricanes are rare in Florida, but stronger winds and tropical storms with thunderstorms and heavy rain are more frequent in summer.

When to go to Florida?

Basically, the state of Florida in the USA is worth a visit all year round. The so-called hurricane season (June to November) and the rainy season in summer lures with low prices and cannot be avoided at all. Again and again the sun shows up, many holidaymakers even remain completely spared from possible thunderstorms during a two-week journey.

Nevertheless, we naturally want to limit the risks for our readers in the best possible way. We therefore recommend the period from December to mid-May as the best travel season for Florida. Fantastic conditions for a bathing holiday exist, for example, in the month of April, which we would particularly like to recommend to you. The water temperatures are suitable for swimming all year round at a minimum of 22 °C (lowest value in January).

The fact that the rainy season is by no means a”no go” is also shown by the following fact: Most Americans visit Florida especially in summer, from May to September it is the absolute peak season. If you accept the increased risk of rain and storms, you can sunbathe on the well-attended beaches and enjoy your holidays on most days with water temperatures of up to 31 °C in summer.

Sophie, 26 years old was there in October

We spent the first two weeks of October 2016 in Destin/Niceville and the surrounding area (on the Gulf Coast). The weather was fantastic, sunny throughout, at least 30 degrees during the day and still pleasantly warm even in the evening hours, so that one could sit outside without a jacket. Only one day we felt the effects of the hurricane that raged on the east coast (very cloudy and windy).

Weather Rating: 5 stars – Excellent

Sophie, 26 years old was there in November

Last week of October/First two weeks of November 2014: Sunny weather and 30 degrees in Miami and on the Keys. Above Orlando and on the Gulf Coast also bathing weather and very warm temperatures from 10 am (26-29 degrees). In the evening, however, it was cool and one needed a jacket. It hasn’t even rained in three weeks. One day it was very fresh on the Gulf Coast to Pensacola (approx. 17 degrees). A change was noticeable from October to November. The weather remained nice and pleasantly warm during the day, but early and in the evening it was noticeably cooler.

Weather Rating: 5 stars – Excellent

Gabi, 55 years old was there in May

We have been there 3 times in May and 1 time in September. In May was clearly the better weather. Who it ever rained then only briefly and that dried also immediately again. We didn’t have a rainy day in 2014. In September 2015 it had rained continuously for 7 days and that was, if it was nevertheless warm, less beautiful. That’s why May is clearly our favorite month.

Florida – the Sunshine State! That says it all. We had a lot of sun, except for 2 days. Unfortunately it was sometimes a bit too cold to take the shorts out of the suitcases. The further the tour led us north, the “cooler” it became. But even at 18 degrees and sunshine it is one of the most beautiful holiday destinations!

We had to drive for years, bound by the school holidays, in the summer months. It was too hot and too humid for me. Now we go in the months of June and November. It is pleasant and just right for us. But it’s already “fresh” in the evening hours in November.
