It's not particularly experimental anymore, but Machinae Supremacy probably counts as one of the more unique blendings of PM with other sounds. It was certainly experimental back in the early 2000s.
Never heard of them. Checked out their 2021 single, Pendulum.
I'm in love.
I feel like that mostly just ends up getting labelled as progressive metal.
Arjen Lucassen's Supersonic Revolution - The Glamattack
MAYBE Devin Townsend Project's "Addicted!" is a close one, but I wouldn't classify that way.
I was somewhat engaged with this kind of metal some years ago, but they were usually classified as prog. I can write a list, if someone is interested.
Yeah, Devin Townsend's stuff is a whole mish-mash of different tropes and attributes, metal and otherwise, applied with no regard for any kind of subgenre or stylistic movement, at least not consistently. People call it prog for lack of a better word, but that seldom tells you anything meaningful about what it sounds like.
I think of Addicted as an outgrowth of 2000s-era melodeath/groove/metalcore intersections, building on the underlying pop influences of all those styles and extrapolating them out to their logical conclusion: a nearly unclassifiable strain of pop/metal fusion. It's as close to avantgarde power metal as anything else.
Honestly, I think Fates Warning’s “Awaken The Guardian” and Crimson Glory’s debut for this description.
Those two albums are so different from one another, but they occupy a strain of prog. power that's still really under-explored even all these years later.
I'll add Tanagra - Meridiem for something more recent and EU-styled that hits some of the same boxes, while also being completely different.
Totally agreed, and solid examples for the Euro-style!

There’s nothing more Avant Garde than this.

I've already heard of them before and checked out Butcher's Ballroom not too long ago. It's definitely something, I like it! Don't know if I'd call it power metal, though.
