New vessel added to an ever expanding fleet Arklow Shipping gets new 4,500 tonne vessel

Arklow Shipping has taken delivery of a new 4,500 tonne vessel - the Arklow River which had its maiden voyage last month from Hamburg to Foynes in Limerick.

The mv Arklow River is a sister ship of the Arklow Rose which joined the ever expanding Arklow Shipping fleet a year ago.

Both these ships are the first Irish vessels to be built under the new tonnage tax regime.

By coincidence Mr. James Tyrrell, the managing director of Arklow Shipping, has this year been elected as president of the Irish Chamber of Shipping, the business body of the Irish shipping owners.

The ship Arklow River was built in Holland and brings to 33 the number ships owned by Arklow Shipping which numerically is the largest Irish shipping fleet. Arklow Shipping now has a total carrying capacity of 180,000 tonnes.

On its maiden voyage, the mv Arklow River brought a cargo of over 4,000 tonnes of fertiliser from Hamburg to Foynes.

The Irish Captain of the vessel is Capt. Oliver Histon. Originally fromCobh, his father originated from Kilmeedy and his mother from near Shanagolden.

A crew of six assisted Capt. Histon on the voyage.
