J.C. Penney Co. Inc., the struggling retail chain that filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last month, will shutter three stores in Maryland — including one in Greater Baltimore — as part of a broad restructuring plan.

The Dallas-based retailer on Thursday announced the list of stores it plans to shutter in the first wave of closings; more are expected in the coming weeks, CNBC reports.

In Maryland, the stores marked for closure include its locations at the Boulevard at Box Hill in Abingdon, Woodmore Town Center in Lanham and Country Club Mall in Allegany County. The closures will bring the retailers stores in Maryland down to 12, including locations at Eastpoint Mall, White Marsh Mall, Westfield Annapolis and Columbia Town Center, according to its website.

Closeout sales are expected to last 10 to 16 weeks and will start June 12.

When it filed for Chapter 11 protection in May, J.C. Penney (NYSE: JCP) had more than 800 stores around the country. An analyst told the Dallas Business Journal at the time that the chain would be stronger with fewer than half that number.
