What travelers are saying
- petergab10Melbourne, Australia623 contributionsIt's about a 15 minute walk from the Old Market Square to the Cathedral which has long past history. It is on Ostrow Tumski island the exterior is noticeable from a distance which offers photo opportunities. Also, from behind the cathedral on the other side of (red) Jordan Bridge. The interior is beautiful from its Cathedral ceilings, the frescos paintings of the 12 apostles, 19th century Golden Chapel, crypt containing the remains of Mieszko and Bolesaw the Brave. Worth a visit while in Poznan.Written April 19, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- MrsWinnieRocksBlackpool, UK87 contributionsWhat a beautiful church, it doesn't look like a church from the outside, but it is absolutely awesome. - Neil KLiverpool, UK619,734 contributionsUp and out and about on a beautiful Spring morning my twin brother Stephen and I were heading to a cafe on Plac Bernardynski and passed this church and I must say I was totally impressed with it .
Dating from 1738,it's a great example of Baroque architecture ,the facade is beautiful to behold ,the most distinctive feature of this church are the very evocative twin towers ,it's a wonderful looking church building ,very photogenic and most definitely well worth checking out if you're in the area and easy to locate along Garbary .Written May 30, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. From the outside, a tall, gabled roof covered with tiles can be noticed from a distance. On the façade there is a gothic frieze of oblique brick, the whole is crowned by the late-Renaissance gable. Three-aisled interior. From the old twelve altars, five have survived to our times. In the presbytery there is an altar with a sculpture depicting the Assumption from the 16th century. In the northern aisle, in the late-Renaissance altar, a painting depicting the Guardian Angel from 1630 was placed. In the south aisle, in the altar, which also comes from the late Renaissance, there is a painting depicting the Lamentation of Christ. The painting was created in the mid-sixteenth century at the Florentine school. The church is covered by a modernist polychrome from the beginning of the 20th century. The church is a hidden gem. I recommend it to everyone. Unfortunately, it is only open 2 times a day during masses 8.30 and 18.30. Visiting and watching during mass is not allowed. It's best to come half an hour before mass.Written May 17, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Malgorzata12,113 contributionsAn interesting old church. It is not known what the first church in this place looked like. In 1516, the existing church building was built on the old foundations, in the late Gothic style. Many times destroyed by fires and hostilities, and then rebuilt. In 1745, its tower was demolished due to the risk of collapse. During World War II, the church was turned by the German authorities into a warehouse and in 1945 it burned down along with its contents. The church was rebuilt in 1950–1954. Inside you can see a valuable altar in the form of a triptych depicting the life of St. Catherine. It is dated to 1498 . The interior of the church is rather modest.Written December 9, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Neil KLiverpool, UK619,734 contributionsOn our first day in Poznan I chanced upon Sanktuarium Najswietszej Krwi Pana Jezusa ( The Holy Blood Of Lord Jesus Church ) and what a great find .
It looks ancient but was only founded in the 18th century and housed in a tenement building that is very old ,according to legend the Jewish population profaned stolen communion bread in 1399 and much later Jews again were suspected of trying to harm the owner of this dwelling/ church ,there are plaques in the church that perpetuate the alleged event ,these legends are just that in my opinion ,to me it's just a beautiful church in a beautiful area of this wonderful city that's easy to locate along Ulica Zydowska .Written May 22, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It's an ancient church constructed between 1777-1786 from designs from architect Antoni Hohne ,it's such a great looking church building ,the evocative tower is the most distinctive feature of the church ,so photogenic ,the church itself is set in a pretty garden area, there's a great monument in honour of Stefan Stuligrosz and a wonderful statue called Statue Of Our Lady ,all in all it's a great church to check out if you're in the area and easy to locate along Ulica Grobla.Written May 30, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Malgorzata12,113 contributionsMinor Basilica, the Sanctuary of St. Joseph with a great tradition and rich history. It is a baroque temple located on the Hill of St. Adalbert, opposite the church of St. Wojciech. It is the first church in Poland dedicated to St. Joseph. In the years 1658-1687, the present church was built on the site of the wooden chapel. The author of the design and construction manager was Krzysztof Bonadura the Elder, and after his death, his son, Krzysztof Bonadura the Younger and Jerzy Catenazzi took over the work. The main altar was designed by Jozef Dutkiewicz in the 1980s. In its central place there is a painting of St. Joseph, the patron saint of the sanctuary. Here you can admire the architecture of the interior in peace and quiet. Worth a visit when visiting Poznan.Written October 20, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
