Recently named one of Glamour's Women of the Year 2022, Angela Bassett is an award-winning American actress with an extensive filmography that has spanned the last four decades. Beginning her career with small roles in Boyz n the Hood, Bassett had her breakthrough role as Tina Turner in What's Love Got to Do With It, which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. This brought her into the spotlight and led to her gaining a number of prominent roles, including Betty Shabazz in Malcolm X and Voletta Wallace in Notorious. Her career has only flourished over the years, with her versatility being shown at every turn.

On top of her film performances, Bassett has shown off her skills in a number of TV shows as well. One such show is the popular horror series American Horror Story. One of the most unique things about the series is its recycling of actors as different characters throughout every season. Alongside stars Evan Peters, Sara Paulson, Kathy Bates, and Jessica Lange, Bassett has played a number of characters in the Ryan Murphy TV series. Here's how they all rank.

5 Lee Harris — American Horror Story: Roanoke

In season six of American Horror Story, titled Roanoke, the cast portrays both the real and dramatized versions of characters. One of the characters Bassett plays in this season is the dramatized version of Lee Harris, the sole survivor of the season's reality show, who is portrayed by Adina Porter. However, things get even more complicated as Monet Tumisiime winds up embodying Lee Harris, becoming her in real life. While this portrayal of Lee Harris was necessary for the show, of all the roles given to Bassett throughout AHS, this is probably her worst. That said, she managed to redeem her poor performance later on in the season.

4 Monet Tumusiime — American Horror Story: Roanoke

Monet is the actress that plays the role of the 'real' Lee Harris on American Horror Story: Roanoke, whose dedication to the role leads her to drink. Monet is an angry, rough, and tough woman who is extremely skeptical of the goings-on of the Roanoke house until she is kidnapped by the Polk brothers and discovers the dark truths of the area. Bassett does justice to Monet, who blames Lee for her hatred. Monet's life meets an unfortunate end at the hands of Lee, but Bassett certainly brought a strong performance for Monet, truly bringing the character to life.

3 Ramona Royale — American Horror Story: Hotel

In American Horror Story: Hotel, Bassett takes on the role of a B-rated movie star named Ramona Royale. Wishing to make more of her career, she finds herself at the Hotel Cortez and meets the Countess (Lady Gaga) with whom she bonds, forming a long relationship after Ramona is turned into a vampire. Their relationship is strong until Ramona meets Prophet Moses, who opens her eyes to life outside the hotel. When the Countess murders Moses in order to keep Ramona by her side, Ramona becomes bitter and vengeful towards her, which is a driving factor of a number of events throughout the season. As one of Bassett's best performances, she earned a nomination for the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Television Movie, Miniseries or Dramatic Special.

2 Desiree Dupree — American Horror Story: Freak Show

FX

Arguably Bassett's most memorable role on American Horror Story is her role as the hermaphrodite with three breasts in American Horror Story: Freak Show, Desiree Dupree. Alongside her husband Dell Toledo, they leave Chicago to come join the circus. Despite Desiree's unique features, she longs for a normal life, which is seemingly impossible considering her husband's relationships with some of their fellow freaks, including Ethel (Kathy Bates) and Jimmy Darling (Evan Peters). Desiree holds a strong presence throughout the season, and while she does commit a number of murders, they are not in cold-blood. Alongside some very strong characters, Bassett stands out, showing off her versatility as an actress.

1 Marie Laveau — American Horror Story: Coven

FX

Bassett's best performance on American Horror Story is as the Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau in Coven. Considering that Coven is set in New Orleans, it only makes sense that one of the characters to appear would be an immortal Voodoo Queen who has an agenda of her own against the group of witches in the city. Marie makes a deal with Papa Legba (Lance Reddick), a demon from the other side, in order to carry out her plans. Eventually, Marie makes a pact with the coven, and they work together for the greater good. Per Screen Rant, Marie is based on a real person who healed the sick and carried out spiritual rites back in the 19th Century. Bassett's outstanding performance added to the wonderful response to AHS overall and the numerous major awards nominations received by Coven.
