Wayne Stinnett is a USA Today Bestselling author of more than thirty novels and one non-fiction book on writing. He’s also a Veteran of the United States Marine Corps, as is his main character, Jesse McDermitt. Between those careers, Stinnett has worked as a deckhand, commercial fisherman, dive master, taxi driver, construction manager, and truck driver, among many other things. He lives with his wife and youngest daughter in the South Carolina Lowcountry, just a few miles from Parris Island, where he went to boot camp. They also have three grown children, four grandchildren, a crazy Carolina dog, and a large cage full of parakeets. He grew up in Melbourne, Florida, and has also lived in the Florida Keys, the Bahamas, and Cozumel, Mexico.

Stinnett still gets down to Florida regularly, but more often than not, it's via his imagination and writing. All his books are set primarily in the Keys and around the Caribbean. His stories revolve around a retired Marine by the name of Jesse McDermitt, a charter boat Captain who lives on an island in the Middle Keys, where he explores, dives, and fishes the back country of Florida Bay, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Florida Straits. That is until trouble comes looking for him.

This book has taken the readers back to the product we expect. I do have some real problems with his writing, still. Mr. Stinnett has resolved the problem with my being overwhelmed with all of the cays, keys, islands, street names, etc. But I am still lost as a reader. I might have lost focus on his term, kerf. Not being a carpenter, or any way familiar with this term, it was on to the dictionary. Okay. I can live with that. But then, MARSOC? Not the least in tune with this term. Then on to MOS. Okay again. I got that one... metal oxide semiconductor. Right? Next... ADD. Attention Deficit Disorder. No, that just doesn't sound like it fits! Then, LEO. Hmm. The name of twelve popes. Getting the message here? Then I was totally lost when the "walls can withstand anything up to one oh five." Still lost there! Next were the medical terms. Hemostats, arterial endoscopes... And then there is COD. Sure, I know that one. Collect on delivery... Somehow that doesn't sound quite right here! But at Loc 1407 in chapter 10 he finally does get it. And he gets it right. "I learned about the disappearance of the boat and its owners while surfing JDISS, the Joint Deployable Intelligence Support System..." Now THAT I got. Right away! How great that one felt, Mr. Stinnett. Great going!

Now that this has all been said, I would like to say that the story line moves well and is well plotted. Love the familiar characters and their blending into the book! All in all, this is really a good read.

SPOILER ALERT: I am REALLY going to miss Pescador! I know I wanted a resolution of how you got him but... I love him in this series. He is part of the reason I like to read the books. Since he is a male, is there any chance of his siring a litter of puppies and there being a Pescadora in the upcoming books?? If not, I don't know how I can get too interested in the rest of the books that are written. Gotta have a dog in here!!

Wayne Stinnett is a great author. I read the first book in this series simply because he was a "new to me" author and I remembered how much I enjoyed John D. Macdonald's Travis McGee series about the Florida Keys. Stinnett also loved Travis McGee and this hero is like Travis McGee, 60 years later, with all the new technology. I felt I was actually seeing, hearing & feeling the locale and I love the way he describes and moves his characters without a lot of unnecessary explanations. His dialogue is believable. He has lots of feelings, love scenes, emotional interchange between characters but without the steamy explicit sex scenes. I would rather leave that to the imagination than read it. Leave them closing the bedroom door but not participating in their physical activity. These are books for all ages. I read them, My daughters read them and I am now sharing with my grandchildren (young teens). I have read the first ten books and am eagerly awaiting the next one.

Negatives, this one is short at 190 pages. The other books in this series have run around 360 pages to well over 400 pages. So this one was slam bam thank you ma'am, with lots of ground covered. No shortage of action and characters though, however the book did have a feeling of being hurried (rushed) without a whole lot of casual island time thrown into the mix, which is a real waste of Wayne Stinnett's talents as a storyteller. The positives, well Fallen Tide is a heck of a lot better book than his last book, Book 7, Fallen Honor (which I really didn't care for). Fallen Tide takes Jessie McDermitt back to his glory days found in the first six books in the series. Mr. Stinnett has a wonderful way of describing people and places in only a few lines, great dialogue and a pretty decent and exciting story to tell this time out. Looking forward to more of Jessie and the ever expanding cast of characters and crew, although we did lose one in the last few pages. If you haven't read this series, can whole hardily recommend it, all but Book 7 that is.
