Alton Baker Canal:Trout Fishing its Awesome! No its Unbelievable in Eugene Oregon. There are so many beautiful things to see & do in Eugene Oregon it truly is becoming my favorite place to fish & visit my girl parents. I just love being here, its a fisherman dream.Just the other day I went out of Depoe Bay bottom fishing & crabbing had a great trip.Today I wanted to try some freshwater fishing so I did some research and decided on going to Alton Baker Park canal. Went onto DFG websites to find out where I could locally go fishing and Alton was my choice. They stock this Park Canal almost every week between 500-1000 stock trout fish yes that's no joke!
According to DFG. These stock trout range from 8-12 or 16 inches in length. Its location is perfect just 5 minutes from my girl parents house. All you need is to bring your fishing licence a light weight spinning rod & reel with 4lb test.split shot sinkers.or 1/4 oz carolina rig leader & Power bait.Orange or Chartreuse color.
and a old pair of shoes cause the ducks use this park for there bathroom.Within less than an hour I had limits of trout which is 5. Wow If only my friends could see me now.You know But even before I had arrived I had decided in practicing CPR (catch photograph & release). Every fish I caught.I release back into the canal unharmed. Fish were actually jumping out of the water several times.I never have caught so many trout in a short period of time.Wish you were here!
I could of easily taken them all but I chose not to.Unfortunately I did see several other fisherman going well beyond the limit.I really consider this unnecessary and
Unsportsmanlike. Please lets follow the rules keep what you can eat or let them go and let's be honest & fair so that others especially children they are the future of this sport so they can also enjoy the beauty in having that experience of fishing Well my stay has come to an end so it was Another beautiful day among the ducks, grey squirrels, Herrons, Geese, that I will always remember spent in Eugene Oregon catching trout in Alton Baker Park Canal.
Till next time Happy Fishing!

this is a beautiful park but they are about to heavily develop and alter much of the south side. it probably will be a plus since most of the territory has been hugely neglected and taken over by homeless. now that things are being cleaned up the city seems to be enforcing no camping and it seems a lot safer.

Went to the park to walk the dog. It's an amazing place with off leash areas for the dogs, disk golf, running trails, walking along the river, a solar system display, a Nobel prize winners display area, and so much more. There were a lot of homeless people camping out in two covered picnic issue, but they did not appear to be concerned with what we were doing. The areas they were staying couldn't be used, but it's winter so who cares. The area was clean. The park has a lot of users and offers a good slice of Eugene.

The Japanese Obon is a great fun experience. Plus if you can hold a spot down, you can entertain a large group. DaveHW

Alton Baker Park is my all time favorite park in Eugene. There are two man made ponds there in which hundreds of ducks and geese live. My favorite activity is to take some old bread and go down and feed the ducks and geese. In the spring/summer this spot also makes an excellent location for a nice picnic, though I would make sure you were as far as possible from the ponds if you don't want any animals intruding on your meal. They also have a pretty decent sized pavillion in which you could host a big family bbq and watch while the kiddies chase the ducks. One warning: the ducks and geese are not afraid of people and sometimes can get a little hasty in their bread eating experience. Keep an eye on the children and everything should be fine

Please do not feed the geese and ducks here bread. I know people mean well but bread is so very bad for birds. There is a goose here right now at this park with Angel wing syndrome which is permanent and means it will never be able to fly again. And this disease is due to long term poor nutrition from human interference. If you must feed wild animals, please at least search in advance for something to feed them that at least won't permanently cripple them for life. Thank you.

Anyway, I do love this park. There were some homeless camping on the river bank, so I don't recommend walking down there really close to the water. I have heard the city is currently working on cleaning it up this area though.
