The last Spanish royal family that can be considered imperial a few months before the exile of King Alfonso XIII
u/Ticklishchap I had never noticed this but the King was actually shorter than all of his sons and daughters somehow. This makes me feel like if not for Sophia, Felipe could have been a Vittorio Emanuelle III like dwarf. Even Alfonso 12th was quite short by modern standards. Strangely Edward VIII looks very tall in photos and one day I realized he was the shortest of his brothers and he was specially short when compared to George VI (who was even taller than Henry and George, themselves already taller than Edward). For me that could be nature hinting at something looking back...
Juan Carlos, despite the later scandals, was instrumental in restoring liberal humanist values to Spain after the Franco era. The country could do with a King more like him (in his early phase) now as it is under threat from the far right once again.
Sofía I remember with gratitude for the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid (to give the modern art museum its full title).
This is actually one of the best photographs of Alfonso XIIIA that I have seen.
Thanks for your comment friend. Although initially I used to think Alfonso XIII was the last great king of Spain...maybe that really is Juan Carlos instead. Because in the middle of a supposedly constitutional and democratic monarchy Alfonso backed up not one but two dictators and became an adept of extreme right wing. It was the only thing that actually caused his demise because otherwise he was a very competent king. Now history repeats itself but the people are anesthesied to the point they no longer react to the monarchy which may eventually allow Felipe to become an absolute king - yes in XXI century. Juan Carlos is now too disappointed to care as is Sofia and she seems to have at least partially forgiven his scandals, because ultimately he ended up being the man of her life and also because of how late in his reign they were. They're essentially the result of becoming senile or distractions that happen as one becomes less capable of proactively defending the institution. Another example of this is Elizabeth II and Brexit but...unlike Juan Carlos her start wasn't promising either, I have reevaluated and you're correct
Agree with all of that my friend. It is a problem for monarchists, unfortunately, that in the 20th century (and to some extent the 21st), many European monarchs and royal family members have become associated with or flirted with the political right, including the far right. It is even more of a problem with pretenders to the throne in modern European republics. Aimone is the only pretender I can think of who is completely free from right-wing associations.
I think I remember reading that Henry was tallest. 🤔
If you see in photos however he wasn't. But the King (not counting with Edward ofc) was also taller than he became in later life because he smoked too hard and lost his earlier healthy habits
Poor King Vittorio Emanuele III ... become a yardstick for the baseness of European sovereigns!
A yardstick lmfao
Victoria Eugenie was second from the right, and the lady sitting in the middle was Maria Christina of Austria, mother of Alfonso XIII. I'm fairly sure Beatrice of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha isn't in this photo, although her husband is. 🙂
Thanks for the correction. I often confuse his mother and wife (the King's) and it's not the first time
