Alfonso died in a gun accident in March of 1956 while he was playing with his older brother Juan Carlos (later King Juan Carlos I of Spain).

He was buried at the municipal cemetery in Cascais, Portugal. In 1992 he was re-buried in the Pantheon of the Princes of El Escorial.
