Alastair Reynolds announces new book "Halcyon Years"

Posted on his blog as part of a larger entry:

"The new book? It's done, barring some tweaks, and it has a title - HALCYON YEARS - which I'm not yet sure is going to be the final one. Beyond that, as I've long promised, it's another standalone entirely unrelated to anything else I've done and there won't be a sequel or prequel or anything. It's a kind of Chandleresque gumshoe murder mystery set aboard a gigantic starship (the titular "Halcyon") which is sort of like 1950s Greater Los Angeles rolled up into a tube and sent off into space. Maybe that sounds like your bag, maybe it doesn't - either way, it's about as much as I should say right now."

That's exciting news, Reynolds is among my favorite authors!

Reynolds out there helping this sub lengthen our generation ship recommendation lists.

Sounds like a mix of Terminal City & the Dreyfus books - very cool!

u/Infinispace avatar

A noir generational ship, probably with some weird twist? Could be very fun.

Terminal City

Terminal World? Chasm City?

u/stimpakish avatar

Yes, Terminal World! Thank you.

u/IAmAQuantumMechanic avatar

Not Journey's End?

Haha! I did a double take on that too. Terminal City would be a good book name though :)

“I’m not yet sure it’s going to be the final one”

Bro I thought he meant his final book for a sec and died inside.

u/Reasonable_Goat_9405 avatar

Same, read it 5 times to make sure

What does he mean?

u/the_0tternaut avatar

final title, it may change

Authors don't have creative control over their titles. They can make a suggestion but ultimately the publisher decides.

I reread the blub several times and I kept thinking he meant his final book. Now that I know he meant the title it makes a lot more sense

Hype. His standalone sci-fi books are among some of my favourites.

Pushing Ice, Century Rain, House of Suns, Eversion... I'd say the guy deserves a place among the all time greats by now.

u/Fappy_as_a_Clam avatar

I'd kill for a Pushing Ice sequel, but he said he's not ever doing one :(

I really want a House of Suns sequel and I know at one point he said he'd be open to it if he came up with an idea but that was so long ago I kinda think it would have happened already

He has written a couple short stories in the House of Suns universe. You can find one of them in his collection Belladonna Nights and Other Stories that came out in 2021.

Pushing Ice ended perfectly. I didn't always enjoy the journey to get to the end but the end was phenomenal.

u/sineseeker avatar

Ugh, same. Where are they!? What do they find!?!?

House of Suns was my first Reynolds book, and after reading all his books, is still my favorite

u/Hey-buuuddy avatar

Came here to say this! House of Suns is incredible.

u/blausommer avatar

I've read all the others mentioned, and in my opinion, House of Suns is the only one worth a damn. There are only 2 books that I've ever regretted reading and Pushing Ice is one of them.

He’s amazingly prolific.

And even more impressively, amazingly consistent in quality. Above all, his works are a showcase of an insane feel for creating and keeping plot momentum.

He's no Brandon Sanderson. He does a book every 14 months or so.

Edited

Yeah that's pretty standard. I don't know if he's still on this deal but I know he signed a million dollar pound, 10 book deal. Which sounds like a ton but you've got to do at least 1 a year for that to be really viable (I'm sure he also makes royalties and money from international sales + audiobooks) in terms of making a decent living.

I think that deal ended about 2 books ago and it was just 1 million pounds

I'm not familiar enough with book deals to know. Are you saying he had to give up royalties as part of the deal? That seems weird to me. And I think the audiobook rights are always separate.

That sounds fun!

His prose has definitely improved over time, eversions was great, so definitely will be checking this out.

u/blausommer avatar

Does he know how to end a novel yet?

u/barath_s avatar

I think you may have him confused with Neal Stephenson

u/blausommer avatar

I don't recall anyone saying you have to read one of Neal's short stories in order to get the ending of one of his trilogy's, unlike Revelation Space needing Galactic North to actually end it.

Oh this sounds very much like my bag, baby. Can't wait.

Cant wait! Also I don’t hear much about it but his Posedons Children series is great.

u/btgf-btgf avatar

Sounds cool as fuck to me

u/tuxxer avatar

Kinda wondering what would the result be if he did a 40k warhammer novel

u/NSWthrowaway86 avatar

Um... 'Century Rain' anyone?

Thought the same. Century Rain started great but lost its way towards the end for me. Eversions was much better.

u/Infinispace avatar

I think it's more a case of Reynolds being a fan of hardboiled detective, police procedural storytelling. Thus the Prefect Dreyfus trilogy as well.

If they don't get John Lee, I hope they use Scott Brick for the audio. His hardboiled detective narration voice is great. Highly recommend "Something More Than Night"

u/the_0tternaut avatar

Scott Brick ruins everything he touches. It's like having Brain from Pinky and the Brain narrate a book at you just after you annoyed him.

Brain is all I'm going to be able to hear now from him, thanks lmao
