Madly, Deeplyis a rare invitation into the mind of Alan Rickman―one of the most magnetic, beloved performers of our time.

From his breakout role in
Die Hard to his outstanding, multifaceted performances in the Harry Potter films, Galaxy Quest, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and more, Alan Rickman cemented his legacy as a world-class actor. His air of dignity, his sonorous voice, and the knowing wit he brought to each role continue to captivate audiences today.

But Rickman’s ability to breathe life into projects wasn't confined to just his performances. As you'll find, Rickman's diaries detail the extraordinary and the ordinary, flitting between worldly and witty and gossipy, while remaining utterly candid throughout. He takes us inside his home, on trips with friends across the globe, and on the sets of films and plays ranging from
Sense and Sensibility, to Noël Coward's Private Lives, to the final film he directed, A Little Chaos.

Running from 1993 to his death in 2016, the diaries provide singular insight into Rickman's public and private life. Reading them is like listening to Rickman chatting to a close companion. Meet Rickman the consummate professional actor, but also the friend, the traveler, the fan, the director, the enthusiast; in short, the man beyond the icon.

Madly, Deeply features a photo insert, a foreword by Emma Thompson, and an afterword by Rima Horton.

“His design background didn’t go to waste either. The book’s endpapers reproduce his sweet illustrations and affable handwriting. . . . From his obituaries I got the feeling he was wonderful company. These diaries confirm it.”

“It’s a joy to spend time in Rickman’s company.”

Insight into a brilliant human
Although his entries are often cryptic or seemingly mundane, the care and attention to his diaries provides an exceptional look into the life and work of one of the best actors of our age. His works span decades and run the gamut of popular and obscure, critically acclaimed to under-appreciated. This book is an homage to his tireless work and love for his craft. Definitely worth reading!

This book is lovely. Alan Rickman has a different approach on journaling which is witty and yet pragmatic. This book is a documentation on his own terms which may be a bit hard to read to some. He talks a lot about friends and relationships and restaurants. It is more of a document of time and place than deeply forthcoming. Great read for the penultimate fan.

I’ve been a fan of Mr. Rickman’s since the 90’s. This was a real joy to read. A good soul, who is sorely missed. Highly recommend.

I originally ordered the audiobook version of this book through Audible since I don't always have enough time to sit and read like I want each day. While the information is interested, being presented verbally with no true context makes it more difficult to follow along. I bought the Kindle version and LOVED reading it! There are fabulous footnotes to help explain who is whom and describe certain settings and events. It's not a "diary" as in a "Dear Diary, today I..." type of book. It's the British diary of noting specific events that happened throughout each day. Some are expanded with observations and emotions. Most of them are not, however. Those looking for a "juicy dish" of secrets and such will be disappointed. What is included, though, are interesting facts and events. And when he learns of his cancer, you begin to feel more of his stoic yet concerned emotions through the words each day (as he is able) until his passing.

Enjoyed Mr. Rickman's talents "on screen". Gained insight into his life & career. Some parts a good read, some parts not so much. As the title states ... his personal diary entries. Hard to read sometimes due to Mr. Rickman's handwriting, but once you decipher it reading is easier. If you're a BIG Alan Rickman fan, this book is for you. I will be passing this book on to a fan of his.

I have always been an enormous admirer of Alan Rickman. His ability to bring characters to life and his personality will.never be matched in my lifetime. As a fan his dairy gave me an inside look at who he really was.I have to admit I wish I had sat down to dinner with him once. He is so witty and sarcastic. I know we would agree on how people live their lives and American vs. British lifestyle. This is a must read if you are curious and want a glimpse of Alan Rickman, a great actor and man.

If you love Alan Rickman, this is a kill-your-hero kind of book. After years of setting Rickman up on pedestal for the amazing actor that he was, I was eager to learn more about the man, and I think I would have if this diary weren't so edited to exclude passages that might have given us more personal glimpses of Rickman outside of work.

Instead, most of the entries are limited to his career and paint him as difficult, self-obsessed, arrogant, and hypercritical of his co-stars. This may have been born of his high standards for the craft, but the more you read, the harder it is to like him. There are several passages that really come across as blatantly sexist - one towards female journalists and another in which he complains about overweight women who wanted to dance with him. He also faulted Kate Winslet for not being encouraging to other actors when he regularly clashed people on the set. He also seemed to take a haughty, dismissive view of his fans.

I assume his wife Rima made the ultimate decision to release the diaries and I respect the fact that she wanted to honor a notoriously private man by holding back the most personal information. From a reader's standpoint, however, the resultant impression is far more negative than positive.

One caveat: if you are celebrity obsessed in general, an actor, or a theater major you'll probably find this book wholly satisfying. If not, it's just two decades of an actor grumbling his way through a stellar career, feeling largely dissatisfied with life when he wasn't eating or on vacation, and then dying at the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating portrait of an actor of immense talent

Alan Rickman was as complex and as decent in his own life as the characters he played in the theatre and on screen. Ultimately, the story is one of sorrow and loss as this good and very talented man succumbs to illness and struggles so valiantly to carry on with his life. As a diary, it is wonderfully written and a page-turner.

Uplifting and heartbreaking at the same time.
Reading this diary took me 3 months, I'm not an English native speaker and it was quite hard.
Harder still reading it through and finding my respect growing for the constant dedication he had for his work and friends.
The strive for what he truly believed, true to himself to the very end.
His wit and sarcasm. Apart from the roles, this diary lets us see Alan as it should be remembered. A restless ball of energy, a great actor, a man.

Very entertainingly, the author expresses his unvarnished views of fellow actors, many famous and often his friends. At the same time, it’s very interesting to read about his life. The impression that comes across so strongly is- a strong and compassionate man. He rarely seems to rest- popping over to Paris for an amazing lunch - described in detail - with friends, flying to America for awards ceremonies or discussions about future film possibilities. It’s made clear that he says no to most scripts. The reader has the unusual experience of seeing into an energetic and fascinating life.
