Al Leiter was born on Saturday, October 23, 1965, in Toms River, New Jersey. Leiter was 21 years old when he broke into the big leagues on September 15, 1987, with the New York Yankees. His biographical data, year-by-year hitting stats, fielding stats, pitching stats (where applicable), career totals, uniform numbers, salary data and miscellaneous items-of-interest are presented by Baseball Almanac on this comprehensive Al Leiter baseball stats page.
"Jose Sotolongo, the team's director of community relations, presented him with the box of Camacho cigars (after Leiter threw the first franchise Marlins no-hitter) hat he'd saved for just such an occasion. Mike Wallace, the equipment manager, cracked open the bottle of Moet-Chandon champagne he always keeps on ice, just in case. 'The only other time I've opened a bottle,' Wallace said, '"was the first year, the night we won to guarantee we wouldn't lose 100 games.' Al Leiter smoked his cigar and drank his champagne, but says he didn't fully realize what he had just done until Marlins publicist Chuck Pool asked what he wanted to send to the Hall of Fame. Until then, Leiter said, the closest he'd ever come to Cooperstown was when he played A ball in Oneonta, a neighboring town in upstate New York. 'Right when it happens, it's more of like a shock, an amazed-type feeling - omigod, it's actually happened,' Leiter said." - Sun Sentinel Staff Writer Gordon Edes (05/13/1996, 'Leiter's No-hitter More Than Fortune', Source)

Al Leiter Stats by Baseball Almanac |
Did you know that on April 30, 2002, Al Leiter, who already had at least one win versus every other Major League team (see chart below for each first victory), beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-1, and became the first pitcher in baseball history to beat all thirty Major League teams? Sportswriter AJ Cassavell once wrote, "Beating one Major League team figures to be difficult enough for a starting pitcher. Beating all 30 of them, however, is nothing short of pitching history." We agree and are pleased to present the I've Beaten Every Major League Team "club" that includes these 18 twirlers: Kevin Brown, A.J. Burnett, Bartolo Colon, Dan Haren, Tim Hudson, Randy Johnson, John Lackey, Al Leiter (who started the "club"), Kyle Lohse, Derek Lowe, Jamie Moyer, Terry Mulholland, Vicente Padilla, Max Scherzer, Curt Schilling, Javier Vazquez, Woody Williams and Barry Zito.

On May 11, 1996, Al Leiter threw a no-hitter against the Colorado Rockies at Joe Robbie Stadium - the first no hitter in (Florida) Marlins history, and the first time the Rockies were no-hit.
Al Leiter No Hitter (Traditional Box Score / Enhanced Box Score)
Lefthander Al Leiter was an unlikely candidate to pitch a no-hitter. He had only four complete games in his big league career, and in 1995 with Toronto had led the American League in walks and wild pitches. And he hadn't pitched in six days.
But in his eighth start of the season after signing with Florida as a free agent during the winter, the 30-year-old hurled the first no-hitter in Marlins history. He did it before a crowd of 31,549 at Joe Robbie Stadium.
Leiter carried a 5-2 record into the fray on Saturday May 11. The hard-hitting Rockies countered with Mark Thompson. Both teams were in fourth place - the Marlins in the NL East and the Rockies in the NL West.
Six Rockies went down on strikes, two walked, and one was hit by a pitch. Mixing fastballs with sliders and an occasional curve, Leiter threw just 103 pitches, and only two balls were hit to the outfield. The Marlins had no tough defensive chances.
Leiter got off to a quick start by getting Eric Young on a popup to short, Walt Weiss on a popup to second and Dante Bichette on a fly to left. But he ran into trouble in the second when he issued a leadoff walk to Andres Galarraga, then hit Ellis Burks with a pitch. Vinny Castilla went down on strikes before Trent Hubbard gave Leiter a lift by grounding into a 6-4-3 double play.
Jayhawk Owens drew a walk to start the third, but he was erased on a double play as pitcher John Habyan tapped back to the mound to begin a 1-6-4 twin-killing.
Habyan was in the game because the Marlins had routed Thompson with eight runs in less than two innings. Florida scored six times in the first inning with the runs scoring on a bases-loaded walk to Jeff Conine, a two-run single by Terry Pendleton, and a three-run homer by Charles Johnson. Two more runs crossed in the second on Conine's two-run double.
Pendleton homered in the fifth an hit a two-run single in the sixth for the Marlins' last three runs.
Meanwhile, Leiter continued to mow down the Rockies. He retired the last 20 batters in a row, including Bichette and Galarraga on strikes in the seventh.
Right before the twin whiffs, Weiss had come close to a hit when he hit a hard grounder down the third base line. The ball was foul by two feet, however, and Weiss completed the at-bat by fouling out to Johnson, who made the catch straining against the backstop.
In the eighth, Leiter retired Burks on a grounder to second, Castilla on a fly to center, and pinch-hitter Jason Bates on a lazy pop back to the mound.
Throwing a fastball clocked at 95 mph, Leiter, en route to a 16-12 record for the season, breezed through the ninth. Owens grounded out to Greg Colbrunn at first. Then Quinton McCracken hit a grounder up the middle that second baseman Craig Grebeck gloved near the bag and threw to first for the out. The end came when Young went down swinging on a 3-2 pitch.

In 1995, Al Leiter walked 108 batters (for the 1995 Toronto Blue Jays), the most in the American League. In 1996, Al Leiter walked 119 batters (for the 1996 Florida Marlins), the most in the National League. Leiter was the first Marlin to lead the senior circuit in bases on balls and the first pitcher in baseball history to lead each league in back-to-back seasons.
