Product Description

Young couple Paul (Justin Long) and Anna (Christina Ricci) are toying with the prospect of marriage when they have a chance encounter with Eliot (Liam Neeson), a mysterious undertaker who claims he can speak with the dead. When Anna becomes caught in the otherworldly realm between life and death, she risks being buried alive. Will Eliot help her, or is he being driven by darker motivations?

Amazon.com

Quite a few folks in the movies have seen dead people, especially since The Sixth Sense, but After.Life gives this by-now-familiar conceit an intriguing spin. As director-cowriter Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo's 2009 film would have it, the deceased aren't exactly dead. At least not yet; in the days between whatever killed them and the moment they're put in a box and lowered six feet under, they're caught in some kind of purgatory, no longer alive but still able to move and communicate. Not to everyone, of course; only Eliot Deacon (Liam Neeson) has the ability, be it a gift or a curse, to converse with these infernal travelers as he readies them for their final rest in the basement of his funeral home. That's where he meets Anna Taylor (Christina Ricci), who died in a car crash following a nasty argument with her boyfriend, Paul (Justin Long). Anna, not surprisingly, is in denial. How can she be dead, when she can still walk, talk, and experience emotions? Well, it's complicated, but Eliot's there to help her sort it all out--that is, unless he's up to something considerably more sinister, a question that remains in doubt even at the very end. After.Life has a cool concept, a good look, an ominous vibe (driven by former Tangerine Dream member Paul Haslinger's relentlessly spacy, downbeat musical score), and some fine performances. But movies like this depend on the rules and boundaries the filmmakers establish. In The Sixth Sense, those rules ("dead people don't know they're dead," etc.) are simple and consistent. Here they're a bit more confusing. How can the deceased wield a knife, open a locked door, or even make a phone call? If Anna is dead, why can she still see her breath on a windowpane? The willingness to accept such things may well affect one's appreciation of this very absorbing film. --Sam Graham

I stumbled upon this movie one night on the TV. Only caught part of it so was happy to find it on Bly-ray. A bit of a cross between Alfred Hitchcock and the Twilight Zone. Disturbing story but couldn't help getting pulled into it. Very well acted and filmed.

I enjoyed this film overall, although at points it seemed to stumble upon itself and fall into a few plot holes. After.Life (.edu.limbo?) Has quite well crafted performances from both Ricci and Neeson, two favorites that I don't think have starred together prior. The quality of acting making it easier to overlook the issues. In it's attempts to be insightful and intriguing, this film more often lands on depressing frustration. The pace is about the speed of traditional walking dead, as in sort of lurching around in circles. The clear message is, live life to the fullest, rather than "wandering around, eating and sh***ing, wasting your life" as Neeson's character regularly expresses. He's clearly become a bit jaded by his ability to commune with the dead immediately post mortem, preparing them for their respective funerals is a whole other level, he's basically a transitional therapist for the dead. He's a bit grumpy about this "gift" he has at times, chiding and disciplining his subjects into accepting death and just moving on. Ricci plays the dead body of a woman with many regrets convincingly. She does indeed have quite the body for this role, something to which ample attention is payed throughout. Think Black Snake Moan...only dead without a chain. She's confused as anyone would be by this turn of events and tries just about everything to prove she is still alive. The transition from life to afterlife is presented as a quite confusing, tawdry, and highly annoying affair. Being fully aware, if mercifully numb to most senses of the living. The recently dead can speak, walk around, make phone calls apparently, but can't really do much else about their situation, or venture from the funeral home. In addition it appears post funeral and burial, the recently dead are still very much aware of the fact they are buried and have a bunch of time to look forward to this prior and after. Sort of undefined just how much time. There's not much of an indication that they move on from here, just get buried, decay, eventually uhm...something. The film is not up to the task of providing any theological happy of unhappy conjecture on final destination. Just, you'll be made abundantly aware of the fact you are dead and be able to thoroughly enjoy the entire experience first hand for quite some time. Final thoughts...cremation may be the way to go in this scenario, but I can't be sure.

Yes there are plot holes, yes there are quite a few things in this movie that probably wouldn't happen in real life but then again I think that is why they call this a movie and not REALITY. I truly enjoyed this movie and thought it was pretty well done, maybe not the best movie of all time but most certainly not as terrible as it is made out to be. Let's be fair here and examine just a few gripes with the movie.
First of all this movie is NOT a documentary, if you wanted to see how real dead bodies are examined then watch Dr.G THIS is not your movie. I am extremely sorry that you can't take something for what it is.
Second is the plot holes, yes chances are that the body would go through WAY more examination to get to a mortuary table than just a few coroners and a quick medical examination but to be fair we are told that this is a small town and we are also made aware that Liam Niesson's character is fairly well liked and respected in the town. So would it really be out of the realm of possibility for him to have connections within the coroners office and or from medical examiners on the scene? What is the motivation? well it could be anything. I hope people do know that Morticians make quite a deal of money for what they do. Is it out of the realm of possibility to say that he could be bribing the medical examiner and coroner just so he could get his very sick jollies? I don't think so. Yeah the twist really wasn't all that well veiled but then again it wasn't all that poorly done either.
I won't bore you with too much detail and give away too much but overall I would have to say that this is a refreshing look at the horror genre that has been on the slab for years. It's definitely not perfect but it's something new and different for a dying genre. If you can put yourself in the position of the character it is a very suspenseful movie with a lot of great imagery. My gripe is that it is extremely long and I thought it would have been better had it been shorter which may not have given the story AS much development but probably would have been better for those with short attention spans that need to watch things explode every 5 minutes. It does get a little muddled but I can say this film has a lot of character and redeemable qualities.

A very good movie starring Liam Nielson.
