The first Gottorp Castle was built a distance from the present building. From 1269 the castle has been at the present position.

The area belonged to the bishop, but was in 1269 transferred in an exchange of property to Duke Erik I of Sønderjylland. Erik's building was demolished by his son, Duke Valdemar, in 1295, and he erected a new building which remains form parts of the present building.

1340 the area was again transferred to some Holstein counts. From 1460 the Gottorp estate came to King Christian I who mortgaged it to Queen Dorothea (129) from whom it went to her son the later King Frederik I (Dk. 129-5) in 1490.

The area of southern Jutland to the Elb was 1544 divided into the two duchies Schleswig and Holstein. King Christian III got Sønderborg County including Als and Ærø, Flensburg County and the Holstein parts of Segeberg and Itzehoe.

Duke Adolf got the Gottorp estate and from then he and his descendants called themselves Dukes of Holstein-Gottorp.

Duke Adolf's brother, Hans the Elder, died in 1580 without heirs. He had ruled Haderslev and Tønder, Femern and Rendsburg. His possessions were called the "hansborgske" part after the castle he built in Haderslev.

Hans' part was after his death divided, and Adolf could add a share of this inheritance to his own land: Tønder, Løgumkloster and Femern. When Adolf died in 1586 he ruled most of Schleswig and areas around Aabenraa, Eckernförde, Kiel, Oldenburg, Neumünster and NE of Hamburg.

Adolf's son, Friedrich II, took over the duchy but died next year, and the next brother in the line, Philip, died 1590, and the third brother, Johan Adolf, became duke in 1590.

The king in Denmark got from Hans the Elder Haderslev, Tönning and Rendsburg.

From 1658 - with the help from Sweden - the dukes got a certain sovereignty of their areas, but after the Great Nordic War, in 1721 when Sweden lost and could not longer support the dukes, the Gottorp part of Schleswig was incorporated in Denmark, while the Holstein part remained ruled by the dukes. The Danish King transferred the castle library and art collections to Copenhagen and the duchy did never regain any importance.

After the connection through marriage to the Russian court was established in 1725 Russia and Denmark in 1767-1773 made an exchange of real property with the Czar Peter; the result was that Denmark ceded Oldenburg and Delmenhorst for the Gottorp part of Holstein. In 1864 Denmark was forced to hand over Schleswig and Holstein to Prussia.
