Married At First Sight nearly loses to Australian Survivor's finale in the ratings - as Nine's social experiment plummets 25 percent from last year

Married At First Sight has struggled to deliver blockbuster ratings this year.

On Monday night, fears grew for the once unbeatable show after it was almost trumped by the Australian Survivor finale.

Proving itself a serious competitor, Channel Ten's Survivor All-Stars racked up 944,000 viewers (five-city metro) for the moment David Genat was named as winner.

Meanwhile, part two of MAFS' final vows clocked in at 1.122 million.

While the dating show took out the top spot for entertainment, the figures represent a drop of 25 percent on last year's numbers.

MAFS usually draws in around 2 million viewers at this point in the season, so it's likely Channel Nine is feeling the pressure as casting begins for next year's show.

It is believed that the cause of MAFS' drop in viewership was because most of this year's key storylines revolved around incidents that happened off-camera.

Moments such as Michael Goonan and Hayley Vernon's 'party pash' and Aleks Markovic's secret 'date' with Persian restaurant owner, weren't captured on camera.

Without footage of events to tie into the show's on-screen narrative, production was allegedly in chaos as they tried to find an alternative to keep storylines cohesive.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday night, news continued to dominate the ratings war as viewers tuned in for the latest updates on the coronavirus pandemic.

Nine News attracted 1.263 million, while Nine News clocked in at 1.214 million.
