It might be based in New York…

…but its influences – and its appeal – is truly global. The company was founded in 2016 by designer Sander Lak, who is technically Dutch but spent his childhood living all over the world, including Brunei, Scotland, Malaysia and Africa, and has now put down roots in New York. The brand, named after his parents (Sies is his father’s name, Marjan his mother’s), generated major buzz and industry interest right from the very first show in FW16, and its stellar rise to success shows no signs of slowing down.

Sies Marjan is a state of mind

“‘Muse’ is a dirty word for me,” says Lak. “We never think about just one woman – this idea of a muse is very limiting and very old-fashioned. But there is definitely a mentality, someone who isn’t afraid to experiment with color, who wants something that isn’t going to overpower them but that makes a powerful statement.” It’s an approach that’s working; to date, the list of women spotted wearing it includes Beyoncé, Zoë Kravitz and Zoe Saldana, along with a host of influencers from Veronika Heilbrunner to Caroline de Maigret.

The collections begin and end with color

True, this season’s offerings included a glossy black coat, the first time the label has touched upon the shade. Otherwise the collections are wall-to-wall color, and the more unexpected the hue or combination, the better. “When I was a child and we lived in Gabon in central Africa, we were basically in the middle of the rainforest,” explains Lak of his enduring obsession. “Literally everything was green so my mom, to make sure that she could see us in the garden outside, would dress us in bright red or really bright blue, colors that would contrast with the environment. I think that really stuck to me, that idea of what color does – how you can make something disappear or make something pop out.”

You won’t want to take it off

Look past the sophisticated cuts, subversive proportions and interesting textures, and you’ll find that the clothes are genuinely wearable with an ease that will mean you’ll want to wear them on repeat. “I’m doing this because I love clothes, because I’ve always been obsessed with how garments feel when you put them on,” says Lak. “When I was younger and had no money, I would go into stores and just try things on and wish I could afford them – that’s why I’m doing this. I never dressed up my Barbie dolls for a fantasy ball, that’s never been my thing. For me, it’s very important that the clothes are being worn. There’s a reality factor to it that I’ve always really enjoyed.”

The capsule is a Sies Marjan ‘best of’

Lak and his team have revisited each of the label’s past collections and cherry-picked their favorite pieces, refining them and conjuring them in new shades just for NET-A-PORTER. Which means that, even if you’re only now discovering the label, you can still pack out your closet with its greatest hits.
