      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Despite its somewhat dour approach, Young Adult is a funny and ultimately powerful no-holds-barred examination of prolonged adolescence, thanks largely to a convincing performance by Charlize Theron.

Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/04/24 Full Review Alexander H Simply awful. Story is grim. No comedic factor. Lead actress is stale at best. No character development. Seen better student films. Simply awful Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/29/24 Full Review Donnation G I hated this movie. I hated Theron's character and how they seemingly just hinted around at what are real issues that people have (depression, self harm). Diablo Cody showed once again that she is the most overrated writer in Hollywood and its why she hasn't done anything that's gotten noticed since the massively overrated "Juno." One of the most mean spirited movies I've seen in a while and one I don't recommend. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/29/24 Full Review Azis M Young Adult is a cringe-worthy comedy laced with barbed wire. Mavis is a train wreck, her every move a fresh disaster, but Theron plays her with such ferocious commitment, you can't help but watch through squinted fingers. Mavis may not be a character you root for, but her journey, messy and misguided, is a compelling one. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/01/24 Full Review J R A truly outstanding comedy with a great cast. Watched it many times Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/09/23 Full Review Vicky H Theron plays a woman that is still in the desperate need of being "cool" and looking down on everyone to feel good about herself. She is suffering but doesn't want to face it. The movie directing is good. Worth a watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/28/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Wendy Ide Times (UK) Charlize Theron is the self-absorbed central character in a script of such meticulous cruelty that it’s like watching someone pulling the legs off a spider. Aug 2, 2022 Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online With all the so-called well-intended chick flicks with squeaky clean endings, is it any wonder that we're starved to see a heroine who's not redeemed and holding hands with her frenemy by the end of a movie? Rated: B+ Sep 8, 2017 Full Review David Thomson The New Republic There has always been something so inward about [Theron;] she can seem detached or deprived. But here it's as if the script and the direction felt bound to heed that loneliness, and let the actress go with her bravery and the depressive sag of her mouth. Jun 20, 2013 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review As much as this film tries to be a mature, adult story, it’s still about teendom and high school hangups. Rated: 2/4 Mar 1, 2023 Full Review Josh Parham Next Best Picture There’s no denying the ultimate sadness and self-destruction that Mavis is enduring, and Cody’s script brings these themes to light with a playful yet meaningful perspective.
