Yogī T Krishnamacharya, was also an accomplished Sanskrit scholar and poet. He composed numerous poems, hymns and commentaries in Sanskrit. He had the background of extensive studies in diverse areas of Vedic traditions and philosophy. He had unshakeable faith in his family’s tutelary deity, Lord Hayagrīva, the God of Knowledge, and the grace of the divine endowed him with the ability to write and compose spontaneously in Kannada, Telugu and Sanskrit with great erudition.

Every composition had an occasion behind it, some with intention and some at the request of his disciples. One such literary work is Yogāñjalisāram, which Krishnamacharya composed on the lines of the famous poem, “Bhaja Govindam” of Ādi Śaṅkarācārya, in a meter easy for recitation and memorisation.

Like “Bhaja Govindam”, this composition aims at providing teaching for the welfare of humanity at large, with special focus on Yoga and its importance. The composition, in essence (sāram) praises (añjali) Yoga for its contribution in providing physical and mental health and exposes the belief system of the author. It will be evident that his devotion to Lord Nārāyaṇa along with His consort, Goddess Lakṣmī forms a major part of this composition, which according to him is both the means and end of Yoga.

Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram takes great pride in collaborating with Swathi Soft Solutions in bringing out T Krishnamacharya’s Yogāñjalisāram as an ebook, based on the original translation of TKV Desikachar.

This ebook presents the complete text of Yogāñjalisāram in Devanagari script with English transliteration and translation. At appropriate junctures, certain additional comments, based on studies with TKV Desikachar, have been inserted to clarify certain points of significance made by the author.

We offer the Yogāñjalisāram ebook as a humble tribute to our teacher and founder, TKV Desikachar who opened the doors of Yoga and the invaluable teachings of T Krishnamacharya to people across the world.

Tirumalai Krishnamacharya (November 18, 1888 – February 28, 1989) was an Indian yoga teacher, ayurvedic healer and scholar. Often referred to as "the father of modern yoga," Krishnamacharya is widely regarded as one of the most influential yoga teachers of the 20th century and is credited with the revival of hatha yoga.

Krishnamacharya held degrees in all the six Vedic darśanas, or Indian philosophies. While under the patronage of the Maharaja of Mysore, Krishna Raja Wadiyar IV, Krishnamacharya traveled around India giving lectures and demonstrations to promote yoga, including such feats as stopping his heartbeat. He is widely considered as the architect of vinyasa, in the sense of combining breathing with movement. Underlying all of Krishnamacharya’s teachings was the principle “Teach what is appropriate for an individual.”

While he is revered in other parts of the world as a yogi, in India Krishnamacharya is mainly known as a healer who drew from both ayurvedic and yogic traditions to restore health and well-being to those he treated. He authored four books on yoga—Yoga Makaranda (1934), Yogaasangalu (c. 1941), Yoga Rahasya, and Yogavalli (Chapter 1 - 1988)—as well as several essays and poetic compositions.

Some of Krishnamacharya's students include many of yoga’s most renowned teachers: his son T.K.V. Desikachar (b. 1938), Indra Devi (1900-2002), his brother-in-law B.K.S. Iyengar (b. 1918), K. Pattabhi Jois (1915-2009), and A. G. Mohan (b. 1945).
