Yao Chen is Xiao Yan's master of alchemy and cultivation of Dou Qi. Xiao Yan met him at the beginning as a spirit living in the ring he got from his mother. He is the reason why Xiao Yan had lost his powers because he was taking Xiao Yan's Dou Qi to awaken himself from a deep slumber.

- Yáo means "Handsome."(姚)
- Chén means "Morning or Dawn."(晨)
- Lǎo means "Birth Number of a Child."(老)
Background
He was abandoned by the Yao clan because he has very thin amount of Dou Di blood within him so he set out to prove the clan wrong and became an alchemist known throughout the central plans.
He founded Falling Star Pavilion along with Feng Xian before going out to adventure.
Yao Chen betrayed by his first disciple Han Feng
Yao Chen was murdered by his first disciple Han Feng, who was assisted by the Hall of Souls who wanted to obtain Yao Chen's soul. Back then, not long after his physical body was destroyed, he was surrounded and attacked by them. Although he did finally successfully kill his way out, he was also seriously wounded because of it. It was fortunate, however, that he had luckily obtained an extremely rare ‘Warm Soul Spirit Ring’ when he was helping other people refine medicinal pills back then. In the end, he got someone to help him create the black-colored ring on Xiao Yan's finger. It was because of this that he managed to escape being killed by them. Finally, the ring went in circles and landed in Xiao Yan mother’s hands before finally being passed on to Xiao Yan.[1]
Plot
Xiao Yan pay his respects to Yao Lao
He introduces himself to Xiao Yan after the former had just been dis-honored by Nalan Yanran and explains that he is the one who has been taking his Qi and as compensation he will take Xiao Yan as his disciple[2] . He then proceeds to help Xiao Yan restore his Qi and advance his Dou level. After Xiao Yan becomes a Dou Zhe he gives the Flame Mantra to Xiao Yan so he can both become strong enough to be worthy of Gu Xun Er and also create a body for Yao Chen. He wants to take Xiao Yan out to train since it will be the best way for his strength to grow and Xiao Yan needs to acquire and Heavenly Flame. Before setting out he helps Xiao Yan strengthen the Xiao Clan by getting rid of their competition and providing healing potion and has Xiao Yan take the entrance exam foe the Jia Nan Academy. When Xiao Yan asks him why he explains that when he was there previously he detected the presence of a Heavenly Flame.
They leave Wu Tan City and head out to train in both Dou Qi and Alchemy. The first place they visit is the Magic Beast Mountain Range so they can eventually reach the Tager Desert. They will train in the Mountains till Xiao Yan reaches Dou Shi then they will travel to the desert.[3] He explains that combat is the best way to raise his cultivation and once it has he has raised it to a Dou Shi they will head to the Tager desert since a Heavenly Flame is there. While they are training the mountains he is also teaching Xiao Yan to perform alchemy. He is with Xiao Yan as he meets the Little Fairy Doctor and saves from the people that either want her poison book or want her for a wife. Later he helps Xiao Yan save Yun Yun from the attack of the Amethyst Winged Lion and protects her while she heals. As Xiao Yan deals with the different groups that wants to kills him he assists him either by lending his power or teaching him Dou Skills. When he finally reaches Dou Zhe Xiao Yan parts ways with the Little Fairy Doctor and heads to the Tager Desert.[4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12]
When Xiao Yan finally arrives at the inner sanctum of the Snake People he helps him spirit away the Green Lotus Core Flame and unbeknownst to them the Seven-Colored Heaven Swallowing Python that Xiao Yan takes is actually Queen Medusa. As they are fleeing they are being pursued by Yun Yun who wants to recover the flame for Gu He. Xiao Yan stops fleeing and prepares to fight. When Yun Yun arrives and says something to Xiao Yan he recognizes her voice and he calls out her name. With this she no longer wants to take the flame from him and asks if he wants to join the Misty Cloud Sect. Xiao Yan yells at her and she doesn't understand why. She doesn't yet know that he was the person Nalan Yanran was engaged to and with this she leaves. She comes under attack from members of the Snake people and Xiao Yan ask Yao Chen to save her. He saves her and apologizes to her for Xiao Yan. After this they leave the desert and look for a place for Xiao Yan to swallow the flame. With Yao Chen's help and advice Xiao Yan is successful in swallowing the flame and they head out of the desert. They head to the location of Hai Bodong to remove his curse and get his portion of the Purifying Demonic Lotus Flame map. Once they arrive there is a woman waiting on Hai Bodong. After some discussions the lady left and Hai gave Xiao Yan a private room so he could refine the Breaking Adversity Pill. Inside the room Yao Chen refined the pill needed to remove his curse and they traded the pill for the map[13] Hai will accompany them on the way back to the Jia Ma Empire and will act as a protector for Xiao Yan. On the way back to the Empire Xiao Yan finds out Qing Lin has been captured by the Mo Clan. When they arrived Yao Chen lent his strength to Xiao Yan and attacked Mo Cheng and demanded Qing Lin be brought to him. Mo Cheng refused as he wanted to replace his eyes with hers. After Yao Chen had defeated him other members of the clan went to get Qing Lin, but Mo Cheng tried to stopped them and again attacked Yao Chen. This time he was killed[14] even after Nalan Yanran and Ge Ye tried to use the name of the Misty Cloud Sect to stop the killing. As Qing Lin was brought to Xiao Yan they came under attack from Eight-Winged Black Serpent Emperor and Lu Man. Yao Chen uses all his Dou Qi during the battle and falls into a slumber as Lu Man escapes with Qing Lin. [15][16][17][18]

He finally awakens as Xiao Yan is fleeing from the Misty Cloud Sect and helps him learn the first step of the Skyfire Three Mysterious Change that Xiao Yan bought by chance. He guides Xiao Yan out of the Jia Ma Empire and into the Central Plains. As they head to the Jia Nan Academy they made a stop in the Black-Corner Region as Xiao Yan needed to make some money.[19]
They decide to make some Pill to sell at the auction that is being held in Black Rock City. At the auction they were out bid on some items and they decided to take it from the people who had purchased the items. As they decide to steal they are surprised that they other participates are also robbing and killing each other. They decided to lay in wait and let them kill each other to make it easier to steal the items from them. As they watch they decide to cause a commotion and kill.[20]

Xiao Yan with the help of Feng Zun Zhe, and his other comrades rescues Yao Lao from hall of souls, but in-turn Xiao Yan receives a near-fatal injury but since he has merged with the Three Thousand Burning Flame it protects his life. The group takes him back to the Falling Star Pavilion and places him in a mountain that received star energy which the Three Thousand Burning Flame uses to restore his body and Yao Chen becomes the chief of Falling Star Pavilion which he was before he took off in the past.
For the ingredient needed to forge Yao Chen's body, Xiao Yan goes to a tomb of a Dou Sheng. He brings back the ingredient and a Dou Sheng's arm and forges a body for Yao Lao. After receiving the body he directly jump to Ban Sheng.
He gives his Bone Chilling Flame to Xiao Yan to evolve his flame mantra. Xiao Yan gives him Bone Marrow of a very strong Dou Sheng which gives Yao Chen to advance to Ban Sheng.[21]
He receives an invitation from Yao clan to participate in a pill competition.

- He felt the presence of an Fallen Heart Flame within Jia Nan Academy in the past but he could not confirm the location.
- He spent 8 years waiting for the Bone Chilling Flame.
- It has been hinted that Yao Chen knows who Lu Man is.
- He does not have any wife and children.
- He dotes on Xiao Xiao a lot and wants to train her as an alchemist.
- The first reason given why he wants to quickly revive is actually he does not like to live like this, each day feels fake and empty illusion to him. He still has things that he must personally accomplish, therefore he wishes to leave his spirit state.[22]
- The second reason given is he is afraid of the Hall of Souls and has some matters and grudges that he must investigate fully and settle[23]
