Editorial Reviews

Review

"What the novel offers above all is bone-deep emotional truth...Its myriad characters--each as real as readers' own kin--grapple not just with issues of life and death but with the sufferings and joys of daily existence in a setting detailed with finely attuned attention and a warm sense of wonder. This novel has a huge heart."
Publisher's Weekly (starred review)

"Baldacci intertwines heartbreak and wry humor to take readers on a roller-coaster ride that's nearly impossible to abandon for even a moment."

"A moving story...the focus is on young people, and the message about love is heartening."

"There is wisdom aplenty in this homespun tale with its gritty action and authentic slices of rustic life."

From the Back Cover

David Baldacci has always delivered great stories, authentic characters, and thought-provoking ideas since he burst on the literary scene with Absolute Power. Now this versatile writer movingly evokes the charms of rural America as he makes us believe in the great and little miracles that can change lives -- or save them.

Precocious twelve-year-old Louisa Mae Cardinal lives in the hectic New York City of 1940 with her family. Then tragedy strikes -- and Lou and her younger brother, Oz, must go with their invalid mother to live on their great-grandmother's farm in the Virginia mountains. Suddenly Lou finds herself coming of age in a new landscape, making her first true friend, and experiencing adventures tragic, comic, and audacious. But the forces of greed and justice are about to clash over her new home...and as their struggle is played out in a crowded Virginia courtroom, it will determine the future of two children, an entire town, and the mountains they love.

David Baldacci has been writing since childhood, when his mother gave him a lined notebook in which to write down his stories. (Much later, when David thanked her for being the spark that ignited his writing career, she revealed that she'd given him the notebook to keep him quiet, "because every mom needs a break now and then.")

David published his first novel, ABSOLUTE POWER, in 1996. The feature film adaptation followed, with Clint Eastwood as its director and star. In total, David has published 48 novels for adults; all have been national and international bestsellers and several have been adapted for film and television. His novels have been translated into over 45 languages and sold in more than 80 countries, with 150 million copies sold worldwide. David has also published seven novels for younger readers.

David is also the cofounder, along with his wife, of the Wish You Well Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting literacy programs across the United States.

I was disappointed...thought I was buying a new book. This book has a musty smell and the pages have turned gold/brown color. Pictures can’t capture the color of pages.

What a wonderful tale! Such memorable characters and enchanting location. I laughed and I cried. When I came to the last page I was sad to say goodbye to Lou, Oz and all of the sweet chapters in this wonderful book.

This was a good book. It started out a little slow but it gained speed towards the end. Not bad.

My understanding is that Wish You Well is different from most of David Baldacci’s books. Most of his books are thrillers. This book is not like that. Although there is a lot of sinister action taking place just below the surface (both figuratively and literally), this is mainly a story of love and family. I cried at several points in this book, especially near the end.

Lou Cardinal is twelve years old in 1936 when tragedy strikes and an accident kills her father and leaves her mother a speechless zombie – a shell of her former self. Lou and her mother and brother, Oz, are sent to live with Lou’s great-grandmother on her farm in the mountains of Virginia.

On the farm, Lou and Oz are made to work hard. There are almost no modern conveniences there, and every bit of food, clothing, and everything else requires unrelenting work. Grandmother Louisa (for whom Lou is named) has two helpers besides the children – a negro man named Eugene and a boy who calls himself Diamond whose relationships are uncertain. Diamond appears to answer to nobody and seems to come and go as he pleases, but he is there when a large job is to be done. He also takes Lou and Oz exploring in the rare moments when they aren’t working.

A man from the nearby town also comes by to help sometimes. Cotton Longfellow is a lawyer by trade. He also volunteers to try reading to Lou’s mother to see if he can bring her out of the traumatized state she is in. Additionally, he manages to supervise the children whenever they come to town and sometimes is there to help with farm chores as well.

Though Lou and Oz have to work much harder than they ever have in their lives, it is obvious that Louisa loves them, and they in turn quickly come to love her as well. But other tragedies are about to strike, and some of these are not as accidental as the one that killed their father. The courtroom drama at the end was mesmerizing.

This was a very good book. I felt sorry for the children and what they had to endure. There is a lot that I can say, however, I do not want to give anything away and spoil this book for a potential reader. Before deciding about buying another book, I read a review, and the poster told who the killer was. The first line of the review told who the killer was. I thought, no, not going to read it.

Well written from a heart of someone who realizes the importance of home, land and family. A great story about perseverance in the face of difficulties, sometimes great, and not giving into hopelessness until those difficulties are resolved. Loved it.

Not like the others
Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2011
As well stated in other reviews, this is a departure from David Baldacci's usual genre of a political thriller. What's so remarkable is that he completely adapted his style of writing to a more appropriate style for a tender story taking place in 1940 in the mountains of Virginia. There were many sad moments, but some wonderful warm ones as well. There is a character in the book, a 14 year old boy called diamond, who had very little education, who was basically raising himself, who became friends with the two primary characters in the book, Lou and Oz. Some of the things he said about the stars and about life reflected such a sweet simple wisdom that it brought tears to my eyes. He had nothing but he had everything he needed. I believe that this was a recurrent theme in the novel and makes the reader think about those types of issues. The book is full of tragedy and hope, is beautifully written and developed and I recommend it highly.

Did not want this book to end, not sure if it was for me, but once in, fantastic, take me back to really top notch writing. You will smell, taste, feel the whole world in this read. Bravo Mr Baldacci. As has been mentioned reminds me so much of the times, characters and feeling of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, class act.

I immensely enjoyed this novel which was a nice surprise. Different in content, setting and style it brings you to a time and place that speak of childhood, of the hardship of growing up in the mountains. It's nostalgic, touchy. It's about friendship, love, resilience, solidarity...and the story is really good. It reminded me a little of " killing a mockingbird"
