Prince William and Kate Middleton: A royal relationship in photos

Prince William and Kate Middleton have been married for almost twelve years but have been together for over 20 years, having grown together from university students to a married couple with three children. 

The Prince and Princess of Wales's relationship is currently being recreated for season six of Netflix's The Crown, which is currently filming in their old haunts around St Andrews University.

It was a long and winding road to marriage, and the couple briefly split in 2007. However, after rekindling their romance, Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton in October 2010 and an April 2011 Royal Wedding was followed by the birth of heir Prince George in 2013, spider-loving Princess Charlotte in 2015 and crowd favourite Prince Louis in 2018.

The Waleses now live between Adelaide Cottage near Windsor Castle and Anmer Hall, their country home at Sandringham. 

Prince William and Kate Middleton have taken on key roles at royal events and became Prince and Princess of Wales following the death of Queen Elizabeth in September, 2022. Here are the best photos of them together: 

19 MARCH, 2023: William and Kate and their children appear in Mother's Day photo

The new photos were taken on the same day as the family's Christmas card photoshoot on the Sandringham estate last year 

The Prince and Princess of Wales appeared alongside Princes George and Louis and Princess Charlotte in one of a series of photos shared on their official Instagram account on Mother's Day. The photographs were taken by Matt Porteous on the royals' Sandringham estate in Norfolk the previous year, and also included the family's Christmas card photo.

19 FEBRUARY, 2023: Kate and William take to the BAFTAs red carpet

The Waleses appeared to be in high spirits - with Kate seeming to give William a playful tap on the bottom at one stage - as they walked the red carpet at London's annual BAFTAs ceremony. Kate wore an off-the-shoulder, floor-length Alexander McQueen gown with long black gloves and enthusiastically chatted with stars including Naomi Ackie and Sheila Atim. 

12 JANUARY, 2023: William and Kate's first royal engagement following release of Prince Harry's book

Following the funeral of Elizabeth II, Kate Middleton and Prince William attended the committal service together with their children at St George's Chapel in Windsor where the Queen's coffin was lowered into the royal crypt. They later wrote on their official Twitter account: 'Goodbye to a Queen, a mother, a grandmother and a great-grandmother.'

The royals walk together into Westminster Hall to take their places for the short service this afternoon 

William and Harry stood together with their wives Kate and Meghan today as they put aside their bitter feud to honour the Queen for her lying in state service inside Westminster Hall. During the service, the 'Fab Four' stood in formation facing the coffin on its purple-covered catafalque, which was flanked with a tall, yellow flickering candle at each corner of the wide scarlet platform in the heart of Westminster Hall - the backdrop of some of the most famous moments in British history.

10 SEPTEMBER, 2022:  William and Kate walk beside Harry and Meghan as the feuding couples came together while greeting mourners at Windsor Castle

On 9 September, in an emotional TV speech in which he paid tribute to his 'beloved mama', King Charles III announced that Princess Catherine would be taking on Princess Diana's former title as Princess of Wales, whereas William would inherit his own role as Prince of Wales. Both took to Windsor to inspect the sea of floral tributes laid outside the gates of the Berkshire estate in tribute to the late Queen, who died in Balmoral Castle, on September 8, aged 96. During the engagement, they were joined by Prince Harry, 37, and Meghan Markle, 41, marking the first time that the two couples had appeared in public since Commonwealth Day on March 9, 2020, just weeks before the Covid lockdown.

14 APRIL, 2016: William and Kate on a royal tour of Bhutan

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge flew out to Bhutan for a royal tour in 2016. Among the stops on the tour of India and Bhutan was the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai, one of the scenes of the 2008 terror attacks in which 164 people died.

Looking like loved-up teenagers, William and Kate threw snow and cuddled each other in a playful photoshoot on their holiday in the French Alps. The couple invited photographers to capture the moment then enjoyed their trip away in peace.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge gathered friends and family at St Mary Magdalene in Sandringham for the private ceremony for Princess Charlotte's christening. The event was attended by just 21 official guests including the Queen and Prince Philip. Kate, dressed all in ivory and wore earrings and a necklace by Mappin & Webb.

The good wishes and congratulations from people around the world meant 'a great deal' to the couple, they said in a statement.

Prince William and Kate Middleton were joined by the Queen and other members of the royal family for the christening of their son Prince George at the Royal Chapel in St James Palace. The three-month-old future king was christened by the Archbishop of Canterbury, wearing a handmade replica of Queen Victoria’s daughter’s christening robe. 

23 JULY, 2013: Kate leaves hospital with Prince William after giving birth to Prince George

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge announced the news they were expecting their first baby together after Kate was admitted into King Edward VII hospital with acute morning sickness. She suffered from hyperemesis gravidarum throughout all three of her pregnancies. The Duchess was discharged on 6 December.

On one of their early overseas tours as a couple, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited Malaysia, Singapore, the Solomon Islands and Tuvalu as part of events marking the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

25 DECEMBER, 2011: Kate joins Prince William and the royal family for Christmas at Sandringham

The couple thrilled royal fans when they shared their first kiss as a married couple on the balcony of Buckingham Palace, much to the delight of cheering onlookers outside the Palace gates and beyond. 

24 FEBRUARY, 2011: Kate joins William at her first royal engagement in Anglesey

Following their reunion, William and Kate tried not to make it too obvious, but they were together one month later, on July 7, when Princes William and Harry stood on stage at Wembley in front of 63,000 people to honour the 10-year anniversary of the death of Princess Diana. Harry sat next to his girlfriend while William sat next to his best friend Thomas van Straubenzee. Two rows behind was Kate Middleton.

After two months apart, William and Kate reportedly reunited at a party at William's barracks to celebrate the end of training. The theme was ‘Freakin’ Naughty’ and William wore hot pants, vest and a policeman’s helmet, while Kate was dressed as a naughty nurse. They rekindled their romance and the rest is history.

The seriousness of the outing was taken as a sign the couple could one day marry.

The event marked a shift in his platonic relationship with Catherine Middleton, and the see-through dress, which cost £30 to make and was worn by Kate wore over a black bikini, sold for £78,000.
