Richard Butterfield
Newbury, NH — Richard Butterfield, lovingly known as "Dick", of Blodgett Landing, Newbury, N.H., passed away on July 3rd, 2022 doing what he loved, working on Lake Sunapee.
Born April 1, 1943, in Stoneham, M.A., Dick grew up in Amesbury and Newburyport, M.A. before his family moved to Newbury, N.H. in 1957 and his parents, Thelma and David Butterfield, owned and operated the Knollwood Inn. Dick graduated from Simonds Free High School in 1961 and went on to study at Keene State College graduating with a Bachelor's in Education. Dick proudly served his country in the Army as a Second Lieutenant in Transportation in Germany from 1966 to 1969. After his discharge, he taught high school history and became a ski instructor. Dick later went on to work in the ski industry, selling real estate, and spent his later years building docks and boathouses in the Lake Sunapee region, leaving with us pieces of structural art around the lake.
Dick purchased Webb Rogers Boathouse, turning it into Landing Marina in 1978 where he also met the love of his life, Catherine Gasparrini. Together, they started the first condo boat club on Lake Sunapee. The love that Dick and Catherine shared created two beautiful children, David Butterfield of West Hartford, C.T and his wife Lindsey who shared with Dick the gift of their three beautiful daughters Calin, Evely and Sloane who lovingly referred to their grandfather as "PaPa", and Kaedi Butterfield of New York, N.Y., who Dick admired immensely. Dick's proudest accomplishments were David and Kaedi, and his daughter-in-law, Lindsey. Dick is also survived by two brothers, William Butterfield of Boothbay, M.E. and Charles Butterfield and his wife Nicky of Deerfield, N.H.
A gentleman and a gentle man, Dick will be remembered for his solid, kind and generous spirit. He was a man of integrity, always lending a hand and telling a story whether you needed to know all of the details or not. He never left anything out.
His passion for the mountain and lake made him an avid skier and boater. His favorite time was spent with his family, skiing with good friends, helping neighbors and popping in to say hello around the lake.
A celebration of his life will be held at the Landing Boat Club, where he and Catherine's love story began, in Blodgett Landing, Newbury, N.H. on Thursday, July 14th at 3pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dick's memory to The Wounded Warrior Project P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516, or Alzheimer's Association, a cause close to the family, P.O. I was so saddened to hear “we” lost Dick. He is such a part of the lake. He was so good to us when we had our house and dock. He became an immediate friend. Later, when we rented on Blodgett’s, we loved being able to see him and watch the love and pride he had in his family. He always made time to make us welcome. What a great, giving human being.
Sending love to you, Catherine, and your beautiful family.
