John Halifax, Gentleman

by D. M. Mulock

Excerpt

Gentleman made its appearance in the old-fashioned three volume form, down to the present time the work has never lost its popularity. Immediately the book appeared it was a marked success. Miss Mulock, as every novelist must do, was addressing her own age, and her characters were the types and individuals she had known or Observed, and yet such is the clear honesty of purpose in the book that the lapse of over half a century has not materially weakened its influence.
