Wiener Neustadt
Wiener Neustadt is a city and Vienna suburb in Lower Austria, Austria. Understand[edit]The city was nearly completely destroyed in World War II, therefore there are not many historic buildings left. Traditionally Wiener Neustadt is an industrial suburban town. It's also a commercial center for the surrounding area. There are many schools, among them the primary military academy of Austria. For travellers the city might be a starting point to explore the southern parts of Greater Vienna: to the west there are the foothills of the alps, to the east Neusiedler See and Hungary are not far away, and to the north central Vienna. History of Zrinski and Frankopan death[edit]Petar Zrinski and his brother-in-law Fran Krsto Frankopan- Croatian nobles were engaged along with Hungarian nobility in a conspiracy against emperor Leopold I. The conspiracy was started after Vasvar Treaty in 1664which gave up again to Ottomans the territories earlier conquered by Hungarian and Croatian nobles. The conspirators were looking for help in Poland, France as well as Ottoman Empire. The emperor found out about planned conspiracy in 1670. He made a trap for inviting them to Vienna but imprisoned them. The trial sentenced them to death penalty by decapitation. The execution took place 30th of April 1671 at 9 AM. The memory of them survived in many art as well as literary works. Petar Zrinski's last letter to his wife is considered a kind of masterpiece and was translated in different languages. Get in[edit]By rail: Frequent suburban trains run from Wien Mitte station in central Vienna on the S6 (via Ebenfurth) and S9 (via Baden) routes, reaching Wiener Neustadt in 75-80 min. By car: Südautobahn, within 40 minutes from Vienna or 2 hrs from Graz. From Hungary 30 minutes. By plane: Vienna's International airport 'Schwechat' [1] is approximately 70 km away and can be reached via the A2/S1 highways. Airport shuttle companies do offer affordable fares for the ride from the airport to Wiener Neustadt; for example this airport shuttle [2] Get around[edit]The town isn't much big. Most attractions are located nearby themselves. It's a good place for one day trip from Vienna, weekend or transit, f.ex. if you travel from Southern Europe to Central or Northern one. See[edit]
