Ayn Rand’s masterwork, Atlas Shrugged, is a rich and complex novel with an intricate plot in which dozens of moving parts mesh together and many minor themes are woven in amongst the novel’s big philosophical issues. This is a guide to the literary, historical, and philosophical significance of Atlas Shrugged, offering deeper insights for those who are new to the novel as well as new observations for longtime fans. Find out, for example, the real-life parallels to characters and events in Atlas Shrugged; how the novel’s plot seems to be opposite from that of Ayn Rand’s previous bestseller, The Fountainhead; what Ayn Rand has in common with the epic poets Homer and Hesiod; how Atlas Shrugged is both a historical novel and futuristic work of science fiction; how Ayn Rand was a philosopher in the tradition of the Enlightenment; why Atlas Shrugged is not a political novel; why all an Ayn Rand hero really wants is love; and the question posed in the title: the key to the mysterious figure of John Galt and the meaning of one of the most famous questions in literature, “Who is John Galt?”

There are two study guides for Atlas Shrugged -- and they're both pretty good -- but they both tend to follow the typical outline of such study guides by giving a "flavor" of the story and covering the major characters with commentary that might assist in evaluating the book for a high school or college English class where the book is being discussed. This is not a put down of such study guides (I own both) but I mention them so that you can understand that THIS book is a deep look into John Galt as a character in the book and how his name is introduced early in the story, yet the character himself is not a member of the plot until Part III. (Some 600+ pages into Atlas Shrugged!) We learn in "Who Is..." exactly what importance Galt plays in the plot and story of Ayn Rand's masterpiece. Galt's key roles in the plot action in Part III and how the many references to "Who is John Galt" in the first two parts of the book set up the major action of Part III.

Who Is John Galt... also discusses many of the other characters in Atlas Shrugged and explains their relationship to the plot and how their character traits interact to create the mysteries and dramatic action in the story.

Who is John Galt... also clarifies (and responds to) typical critiques made by those who (purposely) misconstrue Ayn Rand's book and the related non-fiction works she wrote further enlarging and explaining her philosophy of Objectivism. While I suppose this book could be used as a study guide (for a class discussion, like the other two books), it tends to delve a bit deeper into to story in ways that aren't likely to be part of the typical "class project." l

So, if you're trying to better understand Atlas Shrugged ... or simply want a refresher (without having to commit to re-reading the novel itself) this is an excellent book. I highly recommend it to the Ayn Rand fans.

I have read Atlas Shrugged many, many times. Each time I do, I start out wanting to look for some specific issue. (After all, by now I certainly know the story, the characters and the philosophy and have practically memorized some passages). Yet every time I read it I get so caught up in it that I just barrel through, have a wonderful time, and realize I didn’t stay with my reading goal at all.
So Tracinski has done for me what I haven’t been able to do for myself. He looks at the book from many different perspectives, and finds something fascinatingly original every time.
He also raises some interesting issues I’d never thought of-- for example, management practice as shown in Atlas Shrugged. Yes, that is a real thing and he backs it up.
I also enjoy the rather lighthearted tone of much of this book. Tracinski not only admires Ayn Rand’s fiction—he clearly enjoys it. For example, there is a chapter titled “Whydunit”. This reminds of my favorite book of English usage, A Dictionary of Modern English Usage by H.W. Fowler. There is a section titled “Out of the Frying Pan”—a delightful way of describing the mistakes we make by trying to avoid mistakes.
I do have two criticisms. One is that it is sometimes too contemporary. In a few years, who will know who are the Kardashians? What is Game of Thrones? Politicians promising to repeal Obamacare? Global warming? You didn’t build that? References like these will (hopefully) be incomprehensible.
Atlas Shrugged is a novel for the ages, and an analysis of it should be equally so.
And I don’t like the title. It has an unpleasant, rather coarsely challenging tone.
But on the whole, this is a wonderful addition to the literature about Ayn Rand and her thinking. By capturing so much of Atlas Shrugged, reading it is almost like being in the world of Atlas Shrugged itself. A true pleasure.

If you love Atlas Shrugged or want to understand it the you will love this book. All I can say is... wow.

I read 'Atlas Shrugged' a couple of years ago, after a failed small business venture. It really hit home because it helped me see the parallels between the book and the experiences I had running a business very clearly. I realized that I had done nothing wrong in my business, per se; I was just naive about how, and what, human beings really are. 'Atlas' does a fantastic job of contrasting the 'doers', those who make the world, with the 'looters and moochers', and the book does a great job showing the qualities of both.

Mr. Tracinski's insight and his expanding on the themes presented in 'Atlas' are second to none, and I plan on revisiting 'Atlas' again very soon, all the while keeping his ideas at the forefront of my mind. I am looking forward to the experience. Thank you for writing this book, Mr. Tracinski; it adds and expands on the original themes with some modern parallels.

And I will not give it away!

If you have not read "Atlas Shrugged" this book is one you should obtain; but keep it unopened until after you have read the novel first. I have read the novel twice. The first time was out of curiosity. It became a compelling story to me, as well as my introduction to the other works of fiction by Ayn Rand. I read it for the second time quite recently. It was thought-provoking. This desire to better grasp the philosophy underlying the story led me to devour this book as well. Anyone who wants to gain additional insight into "Atlas Shrugged" will find this book to be of value.

This is a great book! As long-time admirer of Atlas Shrugged and Mr. Tracinski’s work, I believe he is uniquely qualified to write it. Especially important for today are his thorough understanding and explanation of Ayn Rand’s moral philosophy, and his unparalleled grasp of the intellectual state of the United States. This last is especially impressive as he describes both the history and current state of the culture in the age of Trump. But most importantly, he provides a wonderful invitation to explore Rand's ideas and grounded hope for the future.
