Who Is John Galt... also discusses many of the other characters in Atlas Shrugged and explains their relationship to the plot and how their character traits interact to create the mysteries and dramatic action in the story.
Who is John Galt... also clarifies (and responds to) typical critiques made by those who (purposely) misconstrue Ayn Rand's book and the related non-fiction works she wrote further enlarging and explaining her philosophy of Objectivism. While I suppose this book could be used as a study guide (for a class discussion, like the other two books), it tends to delve a bit deeper into to story in ways that aren't likely to be part of the typical "class project." l
So, if you're trying to better understand Atlas Shrugged ... or simply want a refresher (without having to commit to re-reading the novel itself) this is an excellent book. I highly recommend it to the Ayn Rand fans.
So Tracinski has done for me what I haven’t been able to do for myself. He looks at the book from many different perspectives, and finds something fascinatingly original every time.
He also raises some interesting issues I’d never thought of-- for example, management practice as shown in Atlas Shrugged. Yes, that is a real thing and he backs it up.
I also enjoy the rather lighthearted tone of much of this book. Tracinski not only admires Ayn Rand’s fiction—he clearly enjoys it. For example, there is a chapter titled “Whydunit”. This reminds of my favorite book of English usage, A Dictionary of Modern English Usage by H.W. Fowler. There is a section titled “Out of the Frying Pan”—a delightful way of describing the mistakes we make by trying to avoid mistakes.
I do have two criticisms. One is that it is sometimes too contemporary. In a few years, who will know who are the Kardashians? What is Game of Thrones? Politicians promising to repeal Obamacare? Global warming? You didn’t build that? References like these will (hopefully) be incomprehensible.
Atlas Shrugged is a novel for the ages, and an analysis of it should be equally so.
And I don’t like the title. It has an unpleasant, rather coarsely challenging tone.
But on the whole, this is a wonderful addition to the literature about Ayn Rand and her thinking. By capturing so much of Atlas Shrugged, reading it is almost like being in the world of Atlas Shrugged itself. A true pleasure.
(Review by Cynthia Gillis)
Mr. Tracinski's insight and his expanding on the themes presented in 'Atlas' are second to none, and I plan on revisiting 'Atlas' again very soon, all the while keeping his ideas at the forefront of my mind. I am looking forward to the experience. Thank you for writing this book, Mr. Tracinski; it adds and expands on the original themes with some modern parallels.
If you have not read "Atlas Shrugged" this book is one you should obtain; but keep it unopened until after you have read the novel first. I have read the novel twice. The first time was out of curiosity. It became a compelling story to me, as well as my introduction to the other works of fiction by Ayn Rand. I read it for the second time quite recently. It was thought-provoking. This desire to better grasp the philosophy underlying the story led me to devour this book as well. Anyone who wants to gain additional insight into "Atlas Shrugged" will find this book to be of value.
