A shocking photo has emerged of a blood-stained wall inside a trendy pub where a young woman was allegedly sexually assaulted.

Investigations are continuing into the alleged assault of a woman, 20, in a female toilet at the Golden Sheaf hotel in Sydney's eastern suburbs last Wednesday.

The incident allegedly occurred just three days after the popular Double Bay pub reopened after almost four months of lockdown

A man, 23, was later arrested and questioned by police before being released without charge, pending further inquiries.

2GB breakfast presenter Ben Fordham was sent an image of what appears to be bloody handprints smeared on the walls on the night of the alleged assault.

The blood will be forensically tested to see if it's from the woman who was allegedly assaulted, who was later taken to hospital.

Sources told the Daily Telegraph the smears don't appear to be consistent with her injuries.

A NSW Police spokeswoman confirmed to Daily Mail Australia it's aware of the image being circulated.

Investigations into the alleged assault are ongoing.

'A crime scene was established and examined by specialist forensic police,' the spokeswoman said.

'A 23-year-old man, who had been detained by security, was arrested and taken to Waverley Police Station. He was later released pending further inquiries.'

'Officers from Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command have commenced an investigation into the incident, which remains ongoing.'
