Travelled under our own steam from Prague by public transport (which is excellent by the way and very user friendly for non Czech speakers). My niece loved the beauty of the general location, I went as I wanted to see the final resting place of world famous Czech classical composers. Do a tour if you like or travel there yourself. A lovely half day away from the tourists in central Prague. Wear decent walking shoes or trainers as there’s some small inclines

The Vysehrad Cemetery is a cemetery on the grounds of Saint Peter and Paul Basilica. It’s a lovingly tended cemetery and contains the graves and tombs of many well known Czech personalities including that of Antonín Dvořák Tomb. There’s a map at the entrance of the cemetery so you can make a beeline for the tomb instead of having to search for it. It’s easy to find anyway, just follow all the tourists.

Cemeteries are not the usual tourists 'attractions' but they will fall into that category.
I have been here many times, first on a class trip with my school friends years ago when I lived in Prague. We were assigned to find the famous Czech composers, writers, poets and actors graves. Yes, indeed there were many to keep us busy for an afternoon.
It is now in the later years that I come here with much greater understanding of the enormous beauty of this site, the historical significance for the Czech nation, for the artistry that would be hard to match. Most of the graves are centuries old, but not just famous people, also prominent Czech families have final resting place here.
It is easy for me to recognize a lot of the names on the graves as I know Czech arts and history well, but it is not the only reason why I visit here. The views from the hill are amazing, as is the ornate Peter and Paul church nearby...
This part of Prague and especially the cemetery is achingly beautiful. Any time of the year.
It is in the fall, when the leafs start to change color and it gets just a little foggy after the rain, that it is the most beautiful.. one word comes to mind to describe the mood at such a time - melancholy...

This is such a beautiful and peaceful place and if you appreciate great artistic beauty of the elaborately crafted tombstones, most weathered beautifully, you will spent your time here in awe.
The famous Czech artists, poets, writers, actors, music composers are very well known to Czechs, but even as a tourist you may recognize a few.
You may have heard Antonin Dvorak's famous composition " Largo from the New World Symphony." Perhaps attended Smetana's "Battered Bride" performance in the National Theater. Alphons Mucha, the well regarded Art Nouveau artist known most notably for The Slav Epic, is also buried here.
The visit may not be about the famous names recognition, rather it could also be about the amazing beauty and history that is so well preserved here.
Growing up in Prague and over the many years returning here, I always find tranquility and peace here. I find that there is always more to see, more beauty to find. Very different during the changing seasons, with blooming flowers, with the fall leaves or covered with snow.
In my travels I have seen a lot of cemeteries. The small ones with simple tombstones in Italy, always on the hill or cliff, with the amazing views overlooking the sea,
The Vysehrad cemetery is very different, yet also heart-achingly beautiful. It is often compared to the famous Pere La Chaise cemetery in Paris, although it is smaller.
Vysehrad Cemetery is situated on a steep hill that is framed by centuries old ramparts. The views of the Vltava river that flows down below will take your breath away. The exquisite tombstones will amaze you.
We come up here for the peace and tranquility ...and will return...

There is something about cemeteries I find fascinating. Some beautiful ones by the small churches overlooking the ocean in Italy or in a small village in Austria at the foot of the Alps.
In Prague there are two cemeteries I visit. Olsany and Vysehrad. Each hold a different meaning for me.
Vysehrad I visit just for the beauty, the history and the famous names I recognize at every step. For the beauty of the sculptors and stone carvers creations. For the ever so elaborate tombs of the wealthy, lined up on one side. For the tiny and simple child's grave with a beautiful bronze, time weathered angel, with the name no longer visible.
On a hot summer day, there was enough shade to make the stroll pleasant. Just few people visiting.
Spend a little time or a whole afternoon...there is much beauty and artistry to be seen.

Where I am from, a cemetery is a place to bury people, and not much more.
The cemetery in Vyšehrad is an artwork, and a monument. It is a marvel to wander through, with each grave an intricate and unique feature. Many Czech greats rest there, which is a testament to the importance and beauty of the place.
There was even wonderful birdlife in the trees within the cemetery, which adds a natural and almost eerie atmosphere. The keeper of those grounds is a master.
Definitely worth your time to walk through.

Attached to the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, this cemetery houses some of the most famous Czech citizen artists, writers,and heroes, including Dvorak and Capek. Really pretty--some interesting and unusual grave markers. There is a map of locations next to the north entrance to the church. The Slavin Memorial is at the east end of the burial grounds.

The cemetery and church are beautiful places to visit. As musicians, we went to pay our 'homage' to Dvorak, Smetana, Suk, Kubelik, Ancerl ... the list goes on. The 'crowded' cemetery is just amazing and serene. The church is also a must to see - every inch of the interior is painted with beautiful decoration - even the church bells ring on the hour with peels and even a excerpt of Smetana's Ma Vlast. A magical place.

Vyšehrad Cemetery is where you can pay your respects to many Czech legends. The amount of detail put into every monument is amazing. Composers or musicians often have musical notes or items etched into their monuments, while writers and playwrights have quills and books-- that way, even if you don't know who a person is, you still get a sense of what he or she did.
Don't miss the beautiful gardens and St. Peter and Paul located next to the cemetery.

Very beautiful christian cemetery, many statues of angel and other celestial figures, some modern and even avant-garde. Great for photo taking or soaking up the quite atmosphere. Highly recommended.
