Editor's Take
John Vincent is the Senior Editor/Vehicle Testing for U.S. News Best Cars.
The Toyota RAV4, along with its RAV4 Hybrid and RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid siblings (which we review separately), is the top-selling non-pickup vehicle in the United States. I recently tested a handsome Army Green RAV4 TRD Off-Road model, priced at $41,725, and found it competent in nearly every way – but not the most exciting compact SUV. It’s like a good friend that will keep you out of trouble without doing anything to get your heart racing. There’s ample passenger and cargo room, plus its rear seats fold almost flat. Other than a few TRD Off-Road trim-specific details, though, the cabin feels uninspired and cheap in places. The TRD Off-Road’s all-terrain tires and standard all-wheel drive confidently made a Portland snowstorm a minor inconvenience, but its 203-horsepower engine is far from my favorite. I’d stretch my budget to buy the RAV4 Hybrid, which is more efficient and powerful. While the RAV4’s archrival is the Honda CR-V, you should also consider the Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson, with their fantastic warranties and lower starting prices.

Is the 2024 Toyota RAV4 a Good SUV?
Yes, the 2024 RAV4 is a good SUV. It has a handsome, roomy and well-built interior, one of the largest cargo holds in the compact SUV class and a user-friendly infotainment system. Performance-wise, this Toyota provides a comfortable ride and solid, if somewhat dull, driving manners. The RAV4's fuel-efficient engine delivers satisfying power, but it's loud, especially when getting the vehicle up to highway speeds.
We review the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and the plug-in-hybrid RAV4 Prime separately.
Should I Buy the 2024 Toyota RAV4?
If you're on the hunt for a good-value compact SUV, the RAV4 should definitely be on your list. However, there are lots of good options in the class. Take a look at the family-friendly Hyundai Tucson, which is another great value in the segment, or the Mazda CX-5, which offers more athletic driving dynamics than the Toyota.

2023 vs. 2024 Toyota RAV4: What's the Difference?
Other than some additional paint options for the new RAV4, the 2023 and 2024 models are nearly identical.
Here are the key changes for the Toyota RAV4 over the last few years:
- 2024: new paint options
- 2023: updated infotainment system with larger touch screens, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and an available digital gauge cluster
- 2022: no notable changes
- 2021: no major changes

2024 Toyota RAV4 Versus the Competition
Toyota RAV4 vs. Hyundai Tucson
The Hyundai Tucson is a top competitor in the compact SUV class, and with good reason. It has a classy and handsome interior, an impressive amount of cargo space, a long list of standard features and a gentle ride. Its engine is underwhelming, but otherwise, there's little to complain about with the Tucson. The Hyundai and the Toyota have comparable starting prices and similar fuel economy estimates, and both are great values in the segment, but the Tucson's superior cabin gives it the edge in this showdown.
Toyota RAV4 vs. Honda CR-V
The Honda CR-V is another value-packed compact SUV, and it has some advantages over the RAV4. The CR-V has a livelier turbocharged engine, a more impressive interior and a smidge more passenger room and cargo space. It also comes with a long list of standard features. The CR-V's biggest downside is its continuously variable automatic transmission, which is a bit sluggish and causes the engine to drone. Also, the Honda has a slightly higher starting MSRP than the Toyota. Both SUVs are good options.

RAV4 Interior: No Frills, but Nice
2024 RAV4 Interior Quality
The cabin in the 2024 RAV4 has a simple, modern design, and most of the interior materials are high-quality. Stepping up in trim levels does add some higher-end materials, but all of the RAV4's cabins look fairly similar. It's not the most luxurious interior in the class, but it's comfortable and durable.
2024 RAV4 Infotainment, Bluetooth and Navigation
The RAV4 is equipped with a user-friendly infotainment system. The base setup features an 8-inch touch screen, while a 10.5-inch option is available. Both displays have clear graphics and navigable menu layouts, and both respond quickly. There are quite a few shortcut icons on the screen, as well as some physical buttons and knobs. There's also the "Hey Toyota" voice command option, which is helpful while driving.
- Standard infotainment features: an 8-inch touch screen, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, navigation, a Wi-Fi hot spot, the ''Hey Toyota'' virtual assistant, satellite radio, a six-speaker stereo, Bluetooth and three USB ports
- Available infotainment features: a 10.5-inch touch screen, wireless device charging, an 11-speaker stereo, a 120-volt household-style power outlet and two additional USB ports
- Additional standard features: a 7-inch digital gauge cluster with an analog tachometer, remote keyless entry and automatic climate control
- Other available features: a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, a moonroof and ambient lighting

2024 RAV4 Cargo Space
The RAV4 has a fantastic amount of cargo room for a compact SUV. It has 37.6 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats and 69.8 cubic feet with these seats folded. That's enough room for several carry-on bags or bulkier items like a bike. A manual liftgate comes standard, while a power liftgate and a hands-free power liftgate are available.
How Many People Does the 2024 RAV4 Seat?
This Toyota is a two-row SUV that seats five people. Cloth upholstery and manually adjustable front seats are standard. Options include synthetic leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats with power adjustments, heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel.
The RAV4's front seats are comfortable and offer decent cushioning and plenty of space for adults. Outward visibility from the driver's seat is great in every direction. Some reviewers note that the seats become uncomfortable on longer rides, though others have no complaints. The rear seats are comfortable and relatively roomy as well.
2024 RAV4 and Child Car Seats
The RAV4 has two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats and a tether anchor for the rear middle seat. This LATCH system is among the easiest and most versatile to use, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

RAV4 Performance: Well-Rounded
2024 RAV4 Engine
Every 2024 Toyota RAV4 is equipped with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are standard, and all-wheel drive is available.
The turbo-four feels capable in around-town and highway driving, and it delivers a zero-to-60 time of an acceptable 8 seconds. This engine is noisy, however, especially under hard acceleration. The transmission offers mostly swift and smooth shifts.
2024 RAV4 Gas Mileage
The 2024 RAV4 is expected to return great fuel economy estimates. The nearly identical 2023 RAV4 LE gets an EPA-estimated 27 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway (27/34 mpg with all-wheel drive). Estimates for the rest of the lineup range from 25 to 27 mpg in the city and 32 to 35 mpg on the highway.

2024 RAV4 Ride and Handling
The RAV4 is easy to drive and pretty maneuverable for an SUV, though it's far from the most athletic option in the class. The suspension is taut enough to smooth out most bumps in the pavement, and it feels stable through turns. The steering is a bit numb, however, making it prone to drift a bit on the highway.
2024 RAV4 Off-Road Performance
The RAV4 can handle slick, snowy roads or gravel back roads without issue, but this Toyota isn't the best option for serious off-roading.
2024 RAV4 Towing Capacity
Most RAV4 models can tow up to 1,500 pounds when properly equipped. The Adventure and TRD Off-Road models are rated to tow up to 3,500 pounds.

The 2024 Toyota RAV4 has a predicted reliability score of 76 out of 100. A J.D. Power predicted reliability score of 91-100 is considered the Best, 81-90 is Great, 70-80 is Average and 0-69 is Fair and considered below average.
2024 Toyota RAV4 Warranty
Toyota covers the 2024 RAV4 with a three-year/36,000-mile limited warranty and a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty.
