When do I need a building permit?
A building permit is required for all structures, alterations and demolitions, this includes but is not limited to: new construction, alterations, placement of new structures, movement of existing buildings, storage structures for all hazardous materials, conversions, occupancy changes, electrical alterations, heating systems, gas appliances for heating or decorative use, solid fuel burning appliances, chimney or flue additions or alterations, structural alterations, changes to fire safety and/or life safety features. If in doubt, contact Ordinance Office. This permit is good for one year from date of issue. If your project is not completed, you may extend the permit by submitting one-half of the permit cost (paid by check made out to the Greene Town Clerk and be sure to reference your building permit number).
Who sets the requirements for when permitting is required?
The State of NY does. The Town and Village must enforce the minimum requirments of the Uniform Building and Fire Codes of 1984 (19NYCRR).
How do I find the fees for permits?
Above you will find a PDF for the current fee schedule. The Village and Town use the same fee schedule.
Why do I come to the Town for a Village permit?
The Village contracts the Town to enforce their Codes, and the Uniform Codes of NYS on their behalf.
How would I obtain a copy of the Town of Greene Laws or Codes of the Village of Greene?
The Town and Village have no digtal content for these resources at this point in time. If you would like to view the above referenced material or would like copies of certain laws or codes, please see the code officer or the clerks.
Where can I access the Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code and State Energy Conservation Construction Code of New York State?
New York has its own State specify code books and a free editon can be accessed from this link. codes.iccsafe.org/codes/new-york
When do I need a sign permit?
A sign permit is required for all signs in the Village, or any signs over ten (10) square feet in the Town.
What records are available from the code officer?
Septic permits and repairs from 1977 onward.
Building permits from 1975 onward.
Certicficate of Occupancy or Compliance from 1984 onward.
Violations, special permit records vary by year.
Planning board approvals
Some Blueprints may be available for viewing.
What is required for a building permit?
Building plans stamped by a professional architect and/or engineer are required for all major construction projects. Acceptance of plans for any project is determined by quality of submitted documents. Contact Ordinance office if in doubt.
Does the Town and Village allow manufactured and modular homes?
Yes.
Do I need a permit to do a demoliton?
Yes according to Part 56, 12. NYCRR. Structures built prior to January 1, 1974 a copy of an asbestos survey and mitigation if structure contained it. Please contact code officer for further information.
Do I need a permit to put up a fence?
In the Village a permit is required per Ch 62 of the Village code.
Does the code office do electrical inspections?
No. All electrical inspections are done from a third party electrical inspector of your choice.
How many different Zoning or Special Districts are there in the Town of Greene?
There is zoning in the Village of Greene but there is no zoning law for the Town of Greene at this time. Please contact the Ordinance office for details.
PLANNING BOARD:
The Planning Board meets on the forth Monday, of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Town Hall Board Room, 51 Genesee Street, Greene, New York.
Required submissions are listed on the application. Submissions required at least two weeks prior to the initial meeting. Application forms are available at the Town Hall from the Code Enforcement Officer along with the fee schedule.

In the Town, when any change of land use occurs, subdivisions, and proposed mobile home parks. In the Village, review of any ordinance or zoning as stated in the Code of the Village of Greene.
