EDF Prepayment meters and emergency credit

Ok, i am currently on a EDF prepayment meter, and they claim that their emergency credit of £6 will last a few days. Seeing as i have never needed to use this before i took their word for it. Well i had to use it yesterday morning, well so far its lasted a grand total of 26 hours and it has 71p left.

The problem i have though is this. I have managed to borrow £5 of my family and i put that on this key, it said token accepted but it still shows i still have 71p emergency credit left, im confused as to where that £5 has gone, especially as i have only 71p emergency credit left. Does this mean my electric will go off after that has gone? Money isnt something that is really easy to come by at the moment as i am currently on chemotherapy and subsequently unemployed.

Just a point to note, my occupation when i am employed is as an electrician and their system just confuses me no end.

If you have activated the emergency credit and it now shows you only have 71p left that means you have used £5.29 (£6-71p) of emergency credit. You have to repay the £5.29 before you get any more credit on your meter. Emergency credit is primarily designed to cover you when say you run out late at night and the shops are closed. Hope that helps.

As spiro has said you need to pay off the emergency credit used before you are back in credit.
  • Thanks all, the shopkeeper wasnt really happy with £2 in pennies but its still money. Im just a bit shocked at the moment as to how they can get away with charging so much on their 'social tariff'. Plus the fact that i also have economy 7 which most of my flat runs off.
