Editorial Reviews
Barbra Streisand has been a life-long friend of the award winning songwriters Alan and Marilyn Bergman. Barbra has recorded 63 of the Bergman's songs over the past 50 years. Barbra's upcoming new album WHAT MATTERS MOST- BARBRA STREISAND SINGS THE LYRICS OF ALAN AND MARILYN BERGMAN is a tribute to their lifetime of achievements. This is Barbra's first new studio release since her #1 smash Love Is The Answer in 2009.

One of her earliest recordings of their songs is one of her finest ever, "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?" from 1969. The lyrics are typical of their exploration of love and commitment. A far cry from Barbra's earliest ironic songs "Cry Me a River", "Down with Love", and "Love is a Bore" but closer in spirit to her earlier hits "People" and "He Touched Me". So, she was on track when she chose to record their works. It made sense also because the Bergmans wrote so frequently for movies and Barbra always used her acting talents to interpret lyrics. When Barbra sang "The Way We Were" in the background of her movie, it became more than just a beautiful song but her character's inner thoughts and in the end the movie's message. This of course added up to big sales and a number one hit on Billboard. The same combination of meaningful lyrics with superb acting came together for "Yentl" but this time for an entire song score. Both projects brought the Bergmans Academy Awards for writing. So not only did the Bergmans help Barbra's career it was vice versa. "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" was a commercial and artistic triumph when she recorded it with Neil Diamond. The words so resonated with the public that sales of flowers went up as a result. The duet version makes one easily forget their seperate solo recordings.
Listening to What Matters Most, I wonder how did these songs by the Bergmans never get recorded by Barbra before? They are as well suited to Barbra's style as the 51 Bergman songs she previously recorded. At the length of 41:39 its the shortest album of her hers since "Wet" back in 1979 when albums were not much longer than 40 minutes. Barbra says in the liner notes that her total songs recorded by them now totaled 63 after this album which hints that she intended 12 songs originally. But this ten song collection seems the perfect length both in total and individual tracks. With Barbra the sole producer her increased confidence is evident in the choices made. The arrangements are similar to The Movie Album, which was glorious but sometimes a bit overdone, and some songs hard to get into. Every song on What Matters Most draws you in and keeps you there from one moment to the next. It helps to have a common theme of love which is reminiscent of her album A Love Like Ours. But unlike the 1999 release Barbra mixes up the tempos such as "Nice n Easy" which starts out slow and builds to a jazzy finish with arrangement by Patrick Williams. "That Face" which Barbra featured briefly during her Circus Medley on Color Me Barbra gets the full treatment here with a bright, joyful sound that fits with the adoring lyrics. Then there's "So Many Stars" with an exciting Brazilian arrangement by William Ross actually featuring lyrics sung in Portuguese! Barbra was also blessed to have excellent trumpet soloist Chris Botti and sax soloist Dan Higgins. As producer Barbra knows how to assemble the ideal team.
Even with the uptempo arrangements, nothing is more exciting than the first minute of the album when she sings "The Windmills of Your Mind" acapella. It is a risky move for any singer at her age, that is any singer except Barbra. She may have a few slight hoarse moments that would have never been allowed during her earlier perfectionist years. Yet she hits all the high notes and is still the best at conveying a lyricist's intentions. Especially when she has lyrics by the Bergmans who, as Barbra says in the liner notes, have found so many ways to say "I Love You." with lyrics that have a "poetic grace that's completely unique."
****While the deluxe edition does contain tracks that have all appeared on previous Barbra releases (I own all such releases on cd except for one--Barbra Joan Streisand) it is great to have this collection as a companion to the new tracks. It further helps to point out how perfect the Bergmans have been for Barbra and vice versa.
Recommended new tracks: "The Windmills of Your Mind", "The Same Hello, The Same Goodbye", "That Face", "Nice n Easy"
Recommended classic tracks: "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?", "Papa Can You Hear Me?", "You Don't Bring Me Flowers", "The Summer Knows"
I wasn't one of the Streisand acolytes who went crazy over Love Is The Answer. I, like most folks, enjoys the quieter, simpler, quartet versions contained on the second disc. The first disc was over-produced, and Streisand seemed to be pushing herself in an over deliberate, over planned, over perfectionist manner. So when What Matters Most was announced, I thought the somewhat older voice would sound quite past it's peak.
I was wrong. Streisand sounds magnificent. First of all, she isn't pushing herself as hard as she did in Love Is The Answer. Streisand actually sounds relaxed, yet in full control of her magnificent instrument. There are notes that sound a little scratchy. But like the fine burnished finish on a beloved work of art, this is the aged patina of a musical life that adds texture and beauty to the timbre of Streisand's voice. Most of Streisand's high end is still there. None of it sounds digitally augmented. It remains, quite simply, a voice that thrills.
Sinatra had Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen. Streisand has Alan and Marilyn Bergman, and a group of extraordinary musical collaborators. The couple's lyrics/songs fit Streisand like a glove. From the stunning acapella opening for The Windmills Of Your Mind (in itself an act of bravura musicianship) through the stunning Solitary Moonn, to the familiar Nice'n'Easy - the disc is a wonderful introduction and re-introduction to some of the most finely crafted songs in the American Songbook. When you get to the song That Face, and you hear that famous little laugh in that voice singing That Face - well, it simply doesn't get any better than that. That Face swings - naturally, casually, nice'n'easily. S'wonderful.
The deluxe version has a second disc with some of the older Bergman songs known to Streisnad fans - The Way We Are, You Don't Bring Me Flowers - as well as some other older songs that are not as familiar. In the overall context of this double disc set, they sound vibrant, fresh, and vital. Again. But I'll state a heresy - I think Streisand's voice is better now. (OK - read that with a small grain of salt - A Piece OF Sky, which closes the second disc, may be a little kitschy, but it is still capable of giving me goosebumps.) No, the voice is not as flexible, not as precise - there are less acrobatics. But I think that is all for the best. Where there was acrobatic soaring, there is now a beautifully burnished timbre. Listen to the closing eponymous song on disc one - What Matters Most. Streisand sings it with extraordinary beauty. It is subtle and sublime. It is sung by a woman who has live long enough to truly discover the meaning of the song.
Look- I will always consider The Broadway Album to be the peak of Streisand's career. Some of the edits are obvious, and talk about being over-produced - oy! But that CD is an extraordinary listening experience - a performance by a true broadway baby.
If you're worrying about whether or not Streisand will ever be able to scale such heights again - don't waste your time. It's a point in time that can never be re-captured. But if you're concerned about purchasing this disc, fearing that Streisand has become a worn cliche, or a woman who has become so wrapped up in her Liberal causes that she has lost touch with her muse, don't hesitate. Buy it. What Matters Most is a solidly musical experience that reflects a lot of solid musical work by one of America's premier entertainers. Audiophiles should know that the production is beautiful - almost "analogue" in sound. Fine soundstage, solid focussed bass, and a voice that is captured and framed with slight reverberation.
I know I've been a bit hyperbolic in my praise, but it is heartfelt. This is solid musicianship - not some knock-one-more-disc-out. What Matters Most may go down as one of the finest vocal career capstones in the history of recorded popular song.
Or then again, there may be one more album to come......

As for the songs on the album. They are pennned from two of the worlds leading song writers, who discovered Barbra in the Bon Soir many many years ago. She does great justice to their lyrics, with phrasing that is so perfect.
I must also list the talents of Chris Botti, who features in several tracks. a great jazz musician.
Altogether a fabulous album.
1. The Windmills Of Your Mind : chef d'oeuvre absolu (à pleurer)
2. Something New In My Life : chef d'oeuvre absolu (à pleurer)
3. Solitary Moon : pas séduite au départ, je l'aime un peu plus à chaque écoute
4. Nice 'n Easy : chef d'oeuvre absolu (orchestration sublime)
5. Alone In The World : chef d'oeuvre absolu (à pleurer)
6. So Many Stars : Brazil quand tu nous tiens !

8. That Face : chef d'oeuvre ou chef d'oeuvre absolu ? J'hésite encore.
9. I'll Never Say Goodbye : chef d'oeuvre
10. What Matters Most : chef d'oeuvre
Résultats, à mon humble avis :
- Chefs d'oeuvre absolus : 5
- Chefs d'oeuvre : 3
- Trés bonnes chansons : 2
Ma chanson préférée ? Les "Windmills"? Je ne peux même pas le dire. "Something New In My life" me bouleverse, et "Alone In The World", c'est idem ! Son interprétation de "Nice n' Easy" est inouïe. L'orchestration est sublime. Tiens, je me demande si elle n'est pas ma préférée !
WMM est un joyau. Je me souviens pas d'avoir entendu Barbra chanter comme ça depuis l'album "The Way We Were" ( 1974 !!)
Un vrai choc et un pur bonheur.
Sans aucun doute l'un des plus grands albums de Streisand.
