WELCOME West Kent College is a special place that caters for the needs of every single student. We offer fantastic state-of-the-art learning facilities and equipment to support your learning. We also have excellent employer links to help us provide invaluable work experience for you all. As a College, we specialise in both further and higher education. Our further education offer ranges from foundation programmes to Level 3, including A-Level courses.

College life. They can support you with everything possible to make sure that you quickly settle in and meet new friends. They are here to help you choose the right course, support you throughout your studies and help you to follow your aspirations and find work or to continue in education. Our Information and Recruitment Service is also able to provide help and advice on fees, funding and any additional support you may need. We hope you enjoy finding out more about West Kent College.

In addition, through our partnerships with the University of Kent, University of Greenwich and Canterbury Christ Church University, we are able to provide a range of foundation and full honours degree courses designed to meet the needs of industry. The College staff are highly skilled in all aspects of

WEST KENT COLLEGE Our Tonbridge campus boasts high quality resources and facilities. Students benefit from modern buildings including a fantastic theatre seating over 200, light and airy design studios, photography studios and a darkroom, music rehearsal rooms, television studios, and a Learning Resource Centre. Students can enjoy leading-edge IT facilities and new science laboratories. Motor vehicle, engineering and construction students also benefit from facilities at Court Lane (Hadlow) including purpose built workshops, kitted out with the latest technology, including webcams to transmit and record on-screen demonstrations. There are also cafĂŠs and a refectory offering a wide choice of food.

A number of our facilities are open to the public and are run in association with our students, providing them with real-life work experience. These include our hair and beauty salons and The Artisan Restaurant, located on the third floor with spectacular views over the local countryside.

All students can benefit from college facilities with high quality workshops, studios, laboratories and hi-tech classrooms. The College has specialist facilities for all of our course areas, so whatever you’re studying, whether it’s science, art, construction, photography, motor vehicle, catering, hair and beauty, performing arts or any other of our courses, you will be learning using the latest equipment in the best facilities.

The refectory offers a variety of healthy hot and cold food at good prices. We also have coffee shops and food outlets that are open throughout the day offering a range of snacks and drinks, and a small selection of hot food.

LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE (LRC) The LRC offers an extensive library, comfortable study areas, computer bays with internet and student intranet access, local and national newspapers, professional magazines and a range of journals in hard copy and online. The College encourages independent learning, so, in addition to the LRC, we have ICT resources in open access areas across campus.

HAIR AND BEAUTY SALONS Our salons are open to students, staff and the public during term-time. Enjoy a range of hair and beauty treatments, using luxury professional products, for a fraction of salon costs. SUPPORT & ADVICE West Kent College offers the highest level of support every step of the way and our Student Support Services team can help you with a range of issues.

STUDENT WELLBEING We offer a wide range of services to support learners experiencing personal difficulties. Services available include a confidential counselling service, 1-1 appointments with Support Mentors, a young carers support group, group workshops, mentoring scheme for young people who are care experienced, a health and wellbeing hub, activities to promote all faiths and none, and an extensive health and wellbeing programme. This focuses on healthy relationships, sexual health, mental wellbeing, drug and alcohol awareness, healthy eating, online safety and much more. GET INVOLVED STUDENT ENGAGEMENT Our students look forward to being involved in a wide range of events throughout the year. Performing Arts students also put on regular performances. Our Art and Design students exhibit both at the College and at venues across the South East, including London. There are many ways to get involved with life at the College; here are a few ideas.

STUDENT UNION As a student you are part of the Student Union which represents your views. Officers meet regularly to discuss College activities and bring about change. The Student Union organise college events as well as delivering campaigns. Why not get involved? You can sign up to TOTUM to receive discounts for students. Download the app and get the card to start saving. The TOTUM app is free to download but to take full advantage of the discounts, you can purchase the TOTUM card for just ÂŁ12 for one year. This is the only non-for-profit card of its kind and all money raised, is returned back in to the student movement.

TRAVEL We encourage use of public transport when travelling to College. Our campuses are well served by local buses and are within a short walking distance of railway stations. If you live in Kent and are more than two miles from the location at which you will be studying, you may be eligible for financial support, please talk to Student Support on your campus for further information:

IF YOU ARE AGED 16-18*

ADVANCED LEARNER LOAN

Young people aged 16 to 18 (under 19 on 31st August 2020) will not be charged tuition fees or examination fees for the courses in this guide. There may be charges for essential equipment and trips associated with certain courses. You can find out about these at interview or by visiting our website.

If you’re over 19, have lived in the UK for more than three years and are considering a further education course at Level 3 or above you may be eligible for the Government’s new 19+ Advanced Learner Loans. Similar to the loans available for higher education students, it is not meanstested or credit checked - if you meet the criteria you will be able to apply regardless of whether you’re employed or unemployed. You will also only begin to pay the loan back once you’re earning over £21,000 and, in the same way as the higher education tuition loans, it is written off after 30 years.

IF YOU ARE AGED 19+ You may be eligible to receive financial help with course fees. If you do not hold a level 2 qualification (e.g. 5 GCSEs at Grades A*-C/9-4) or a level 3 qualification (e.g. 2 A-Levels) and are under 23 years old, you may be able to get a substantial reduction in your fees. You may also be able to claim for free or discounted courses at level 1 and entry level if you’re aiming for a level 2 course, do not already have a qualification at this level and are under 23 years old.

CHILDREN IN CARE AND YOUNG CARE LEAVERS If you are 16-18 and in the care of the local authority, or you have recently left care and are living independently, you may be entitled to a bursary of up to £1,200 to support you with the cost of education from the Government to support your studies. Please speak to a member of Student Support for more information.

FREE COLLEGE MEALS The Government provides funding for eligible students to receive a free meal each day they attend college. Students aged between 16-18 on the 31 August of the year they start their course may be eligible. Students aged 19 or over are only eligible to receive a free meal if they are continuing on a study programme they began aged 16 to 18 or have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). Please speak to Student Support for further details or email

4. PRE-INTERVIEW We may contact you if we feel that you have not chosen the right course and level, according to your personal statement and qualifications. This is to ensure you select the course most suited to you.

5. COME FOR AN INTERVIEW At your interview, we will discuss your aims for the future and your predicted/actual grades.

6. GET A PLACE After a successful interview, you will be made an offer at the College on an appropriate course. If, for any reason, you do not meet the conditions of your offer, please don’t worry as we will strive to offer you an alternative route to achieve your goal at enrolment. The first few weeks of term allow you and your tutors to review your progress. If you feel the course isn’t right for you, you will have the opportunity to discuss other options at the College.

ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION (HE)

YOUR CAREER: Students on the Access to Higher Education Course progress onto University to study a breadth of subjects. Previous students have gone on to study everything from Business to Sports Science, from English Literature to Radiography and Computer Science to Nursing and Midwifery. PRE-ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION LEVEL 2 | 1 YEAR, FULL-TIME COURSE CODE: 60319 AWARDING BODY: LASER LEARNING AWARDS WHY THIS COURSE?

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

This course is designed specifically for mature students who are returning to education after a period of time and are planning to progress onto the full-time Access to Higher Education course, or as preparation for any number of further education courses.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course. You will be invited to an interview and asked to take an initial assessment. We recommend you have at least one GCSE in English or maths before starting this course or else discuss our two year option at interview, involving a Pre-Access year before undertaking the full qualification. You need to be over 19 and have a desire to study at university level.

WHAT WILL I STUDY? You will gain the necessary skills to further your studies including: • English language • Maths/statistics • ICT • Research skills • Time management and presentations You will be assessed using a coursework portfolio of three units built, as the course progresses.

Access opens doors to university and study for a higher education course when you want a change in career direction.

West Kent College is an excellent place to study A-Levels with highly qualified subject specialist lecturers teaching in modern facilities. Students are given a high level of support with 1-1 meetings occurring half-termly as well as the ability of all students to contact lecturers regarding any issues. Students are supported in their independent work via Moodle, a virtual learning resource, which gives them access to lesson materials, videos and links to useful websites. 18

ASSESSMENT Students will sit externally assessed exams in the summer exam season at the end of both the AS and A-Level years. During the second year, students will also be assessed on their competency in a variety of practical skills. This will be reported separately as a pass/uncredited mark with their exam results.

CAREER AND PROGRESSION OPTIONS Students who complete this course can go onto a number of University courses which have a biological element. These include animal behaviour, nutrition, sports science and forensics.

Practical endorsement, where you will be assessed on your competency to conduct a wide variety of practical skills, is integrated throughout both years of the course.

Business gives you an understanding of the many issues faced by companies, and encourages students to develop their analytical and evaluative capabilities in solving them. As part of this course you will explore the different elements within a business – including marketing, human resources, finance and business strategy.

You will need five GCSEs at Grade C/4 or above (including English Language and Mathematics and Grade B/6 or above in a related subject).

ASSESSMENT This is a two-year linear program, with students sitting three examinations at the end of the second year to form the A-level grade. Throughout the two years the students will receive regular assessments which will be in the style of the examination to help prepare as well as in class activities. All work will be assessed against the examination board standards and students will receive feedback.

CAREER AND PROGRESSION OPTIONS Upon completing this course you will be equipped to move into university, a higher apprenticeship or into work. You could choose from a range of specialist business-related degrees, such as finance, retail and marketing.


A-LEVEL CHEMISTRY LEVEL 3 | 2 YEARS, FULL-TIME COURSE CODE: 66315 AWARDING BODY: AQA WHAT WILL I STUDY?

ASSESSMENT

Chemistry attempts to answer the big question ‘what is the world made of’ and it’s the search for this answer that makes this subject so fascinating. From investigating how one substance can be changed drastically into another, to researching a new wonder drug to save millions of lives, the opportunities that chemistry provides are endless.

There is no coursework on this course. However, your performance during practicals will be assessed. There are three exams at the end of the two years for A-Level, all of which are two hours long. At least 15% of the marks for A-Level Chemistry are based on what you learned in your practicals.

CAREER AND PROGRESSION OPTIONS Upon completing this course you will be equipped to move into university, a higher apprenticeship or into work. Possible career options include analytical chemist, chemical engineer, clinical biochemist, pharmacologist, doctor, toxicologist or environmental consultant.

ASSESSMENT Assessment is ongoing through homework assignments as well as verbal feedback and discussion during classroom based activities. Work is marked according to the course mark schemes and assigned guideline grades to enable students to chart their progress. Some work is completed through timed assignments to enable students to practice exam skills with time constraints.

CAREER AND PROGRESSION OPTIONS Upon completing this course you will be equipped to progress to university, a higher apprenticeship or into work. English Language is an ideal first step in the study of arts and humanities subjects, or English Language and Literature. A qualification in English language can lead to careers such as: advertising, journalism, publishing, TV, radio and film, events management, and creative writing.

WHAT WILL I STUDY? As one of the most popular subjects to study at A-Level, English Literature is valued by employers, universities and Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) as a traditional subject with high credibility to help students develop their critical thinking, presentation, logic and research skills. As part of the course you will study a range of texts, including Frankenstein (Mary Shelley); The Handmaid’s Tale (Margaret Atwood); Poems of the Decade: An Anthology; Othello (Shakespeare) and A Streetcar Named Desire (Tennessee Williams).

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS You will need five GCSEs at Grade C/4 or above (including English Language and Mathematics and Grade B/6 or above in a related subject).

ASSESSMENT The A-Level qualification has a coursework component worth 20%, this a comparative piece where you will explore the connections and comparative differences between two texts. The rest of the qualification will be assessed across three exams at the end of the two year programme: component one Drama, component two Prose, and component three Poetry.

CAREER AND PROGRESSION OPTIONS Upon completing this course you will be equipped to move on to university, a higher apprenticeship or work. English literature is an ideal first step in the study of arts and humanities subjects, or English language and literature.


A-LEVEL FILM STUDIES LEVEL 3 | 2 YEARS, FULL-TIME COURSE CODE: 66315 | AWARDING BODY: WJEC WHAT WILL I STUDY? Year 1 Students will explore how film can be understood as a modern art-form and the ways in which individual film texts are reflections of the social and production contexts that produce them. Films will be compared and contrasted with one another to unpack the changes made to Hollywood productions, the differences in mainstream and independent cinema, as well as theories such as authorship, ideology and narrative. Topics covered in the first year are: • Hollywood 1930-1990 • American Film Since 2005 • British Film Since 1995

Year 2 In the second year, the scope of the course will expand to encompass films from different cultural and historical contexts, where students will consider the ways in which technological developments, national and international production, filmmaker’s personal style and theories all impact upon the creation and reception of film. Topics covered in the second year are: • Global Film • Documentary Film • Silent Cinema • Experimental Film

Additionally, students will produce a practical piece of creative work, taking the form of either a short film or screenplay with accompanying digital storyboard.
