I went to online learning at my high school in sophomore year, due to social anxiety. The school was safe, but had experiences with threats. With the threats and my social anxiety, I ultimately decided to go online. I didn't enjoy the fast paced environment at the school either, and felt I couldn't make good connections with my teachers. When I went online they weren't great with communicating with me about events for college readiness. So I missed out on scholarships, and events that would help me feel comfortable with going to college.
I enjoyed my time at Mankato West High School. I think the one of the parts that stand out the most to me was the school administrators and counselors were incredibly helpful and involved in the school, the counselors were open to meet and talk about goals, what classes that should be taken for goals and they were helpful with questions and helpful tips on how they thought it would be best to get you to your goals. The administrators were very involved in the community and always helped amp up "school spirit". The principal Sheri Blasing especially, I went to a private middle school and the adminstrators there were not very involved and could rarely been seen in the school outside their offices. Principal Blasing was always seen interacting with students, teachers, and other staff in the hallways and at different school events.
I came to Mankato West as a freshman in 2020, during the pandemic of Covid-19. This year was mostly online with a couple of months of part-time in-person learning. I did not have the typical first year and spent the majority of my time at my dance studio or home. Going into sophomore year, we still wore masks but were in-person every day and this is the year I made most of my friends and started participating in activities. I went on the band trip to Los Angeles and that was by far the highlight of my high school experience. In my junior year, I took harder classes and had a rough year because of my mental health. I wish there were more resources for people struggling with depression at the school. Once I pulled myself up, the rest of the year was good and I joined more social clubs. In my last year in high school, I did mostly PSEO college classes at Minnesota State University with only a couple of high school classes. I am very grateful my high school offers these opportunities.
