Southwest Asia[edit]

Could someone here give me some sources that use “Southwest Asia” to refer to the entirety of West Asia? Maxwatermelon (talk) 18:47, 17 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Western AsiaWest Asia – Per the five criteria and WP:COMMONNAME. "West Asia" has become more common than "Western Asia" in English since the past 40 years, and is also more consistent with the naming of the other regions of Asia (East Asia, North Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia) as well as more easily recognizable, natural and concise. The corresponding adjective "West Asian" has also become more common than "Western Asian". 2A01:CB00:4C3:D500:C041:75B4:63A7:B6C4 (talk) 09:36, 16 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Weak support: The first Ngrams evidence is a bit circumstantial on its own, but considered alongside the consistency consideration, and the much stronger adjectival Ngrams usage trend, there's a pretty reasonable case for making the shift. "West Asian" is also used more than the alternative on the page itself, not least with respect to the numerous sports associations West Asian Games, West Asia Basketball Association, West Asian Football Federation, and the West Asian Tennis Federation. That's quite a strong usage case. Iskandar323 (talk) 11:48, 16 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

UNIDO excludes Iran[edit]

Hello,

A source, (found here: https://www.unido.org/sites/default/files/files/2019-06/UNIDO_in_ASP_Region.pdf?_token=1296314269#:~:text=3%20SAARC%3A%20All%20eight%20Member,and%20Technical%20Cooperation%20recipient%20countries.) included a west Asian country, Iran, as a south Asian country and may be found on the 5th page. Maybe this can be included under the Definitions section of the article? I can include it, but would like another editor’s thoughts. Or, it may be more applicable to bring this topic up on the South Asia page. WikiAmerican1 (talk) 04:34, 15 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

FAO includes Afghanistan[edit]

Hello,

The FAO includes Afghanistan in the west Asia region. The source is here: https://www.fao.org/3/Y1997e/y1997e0q.htm

It is found in the first sentence “The following countries and areas comprise the West Asia subregion: Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan…”. I can include it, maybe under the Definitions section of the article, but would like a second opinion from another editor.
