Wendi Murdoch is an entrepreneur, art collector, investor, and movie producer who lives in New York City with her two daughters.
Born in China, her parents were both engineers, and she was born in Jinan, Shandong, and raised in Xuzhou, Jiangsu. Wendi attended Xuzhou First Secondary School, where she was a competitive volleyball player. At the age of 16, Wendi enrolled at the Guangzhou Medical College, but later decided not to study medicine. Instead, she moved to the US and enrolled in California State University, where she earned a BA in Economics, graduating as a top student, and earned an MBA from Yale University.
Wendi, who is a serious art collector herself and supporter of Chinese contemporary artists, feels that Artsy provides a unique service: “You feel you help the art market to a broader universe.”
Wendi co-produced Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, a movie about two footbound children in the Qing dynasty in China that was directed by Wayne Wang. The film won The Golden Angel Award at the Chinese American Film Festival. Murdoch went on to produce Sky Ladder, a Netflix documentary series that showcased the art of Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang, directed by Oscar nominated Kevin MacDonald. The film premiered in January 2016 at the Sundance Film Festival.Wendi co-chaired several events at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, including the highly popular exhibition “China: Through the Looking Glass.” In 2015. She is the Chairwoman for Friends of the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Benefit. She also sits on the board of several organizations, including Artsy and Yale School of Management.
Wendi, who was married to News Corporation chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch for fourteen years, now lives in New York City with their two teenage daughters.
